WHAT IS SCHOOL CULTURE?

- School Culture: This refers to the shared values, beliefs, traditions, norms, and
behaviors within a school community. It encompasses the collective identity of the school,
including its customs, rituals, and the way people interact. A school's culture influences
how teachers teach, students learn, and how everyone within the community engages and
collaborates.

“Culture is the most powerful source of leverage for bringing about change in a school or
any organization, for that matter”- Thomas J. Sergionni

1. Changing School Culture

Changing school culture involves transforming the values, beliefs, behaviors, and
overall atmosphere within a school community. It often includes fostering a more
inclusive, supportive, and innovative environment, addressing issues like
communication, relationships, teaching methods, and student well-being to create a
positive and effective learning environment. This change might involve various
strategies, such as implementing new policies, promoting collaboration among staff,
involving students in decision-making, and emphasizing continuous improvement.

Changing school culture involves a deliberate, multifaceted approach.

1. Assessment: Understand the current culture. Conduct surveys, interviews,

and assessments to identify existing values, norms, and areas for
improvement.

2. Vision and Leadership: Develop a clear vision for the desired culture.
Strong leadership is vital to communicate this vision and guide the change
process

3. Involvement: Engage all stakeholders - teachers, students, parents, and

the community - in the change process. Encourage participation and
ownership

4. Professional Development: Offer training and support for teachers and

staff to embrace new practices, teaching methods, and ways of interaction.

5. Communication: Foster in open and transparent communication channels.

Encourage feedback, ideas, and discussions among all members of the
school community.

6. Modeling and Reinforcement: Lead by example. Consistently model the

desired behavior and values, and reinforce them through recognition and
positive reinforcement.

7. Address Policies and Practices: Review and modify policies, procedures,

and practices that might hinder the desired cultural change

8. Continuous Improvement: Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and

improvement. Encourage innovation and adaptability.

9. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate milestones and

successes along the way. This reinforces the commitment to the new culture.

Remember, changing school culture is a gradual process that requires

patience, persistence, and ongoing commitment from all involved parties
