PM Problems

This document contains 4 problems related to project management. Problem 1 involves drawing an activity network and calculating earliest start, finish, late start, late finish times and critical path for 9 activities. Problem 2 involves calculating the probability a training seminar will be ready in 47 days given activity durations and precedence relationships. Problem 3 involves recommending a completion date for a project given activity durations, costs, and precedence relationships. Problem 4 involves constructing a network, Gantt chart, and determining load profiles for resources given activity durations and precedence relationships.

Problem 1
Draw an activity network for the following activities. Assuming that
the project starts at day 0, calculate the ES, EF, LS and LF and the
earliest completion time of the project. Calculate also the total slack
on all activities and identify the critical path

Activity A B C D E F G H I
Immediate
- - A A,B B,C C,D C,D E,F E,G,F
Predecessor
Activity
Duration 3 5 6 2 4 7 3 4 5
(Day)

Problem 2
The director of continuing education at Bluebird University has just
approved the planning for sales training seminar: Her administrative
assistant has identified the various activities that must be done and
their relationships to each other, as shown below:

Immediate
Activity Description
Predecessor(s)
Design brochure and
A -
course announcement
Identify prospective
B -
teachers
Prepare detailed outline of
C -
course
Send brochure and
D A
student applications
E Send teacher applications B
F Send teacher for course C,E
G Accept students D
H Select text for course F
I Order and receive texts G,H
J Prepare room for classes G

Because of the uncertainty in planning the new course, the assistant

also has applied the following time estimates for each activity.

Time Estimates (Days)

Activity
Optimistic Most Likely Pessimistic
A 5 7 8
B 6 8 12
C 3 4 5
D 11 17 25
E 8 10 12
F 3 4 5
G 4 8 9
H 5 7 9
I 8 11 17
J 4 4 4

The director wants to conduct the seminar 47 working days from now.
What is the probability that everything will be ready on time?

Problem 3
Your company has just received an order from a good customer for a
specially designed electric motor. The contract states that, starting on
the thirteenth day from now, your firm will experience a penalty of
$100 per day until the job is completed. Indirect project costs amount
to $200 per day. The data on direct costs and activity precedence
relationships are given in the following table:

Activity Normal Normal Crash Crash Immediate

Time Cost ($) Time Cost ($) Predecessor(s)
(days) (days)
A 4 1000 3 1300 -
B 7 1400 4 2000 -
C 5 2000 4 2700 -
D 6 1200 5 1400 A
E 3 900 2 1100 B
F 11 2500 6 3750 C
G 4 800 3 1450 D,E
H 3 300 1 500 F,G

a. Draw the project network diagram.

b. What completion date would you recommend?

Problem 4
A project consists of seven activities. The precedence relationships are
given in the following table:

Time Immediate
Activity
(Days) Predecessor(s)
A 32 -
B 21 -
C 30 -
D 45 A
E 26 A,B
F 28 C
G 20 E,F

a. Construct a network for this project.

b. Draw a Gantt chart of the schedule for this project based on
earliest starting times.
c. What group of activities will have to be completed by day 60 in
order to guarantee that the project will not be delayed.
The tasks require both welders and pip fitters. The requirements
are:

Number of Number of
Activity
Welders Required Pip Fitters Required
A 6 10
B 3 15
C 8 8
D 0 20
E 10 6
F 10 9
G 4 14

d. Determine the load profiles for welders and pipe fitters

assuming an early-start schedule.
e. Determine the load profiles assuming a late-start schedule.
