Hi Candy
I’m sending you an advert for a winter job at the Pine Needles Ski Resort. I know you are looking for a seasonal job and I
thought it would be great for you. They are looking for ski assistants to help the instructors in their work.
I spoke to Ed Nelson at the resort and he said that although you don’t need experience, you do need to be able to ski and
snowboard.
The only disadvantage might be that you need to spend a lot of time standing up - you are outdoors most of the time in sub-
zero temperatures. You may have an early start too but considering you are from the same village, I’m sure that won’t be
problem for you!
The closing date for applications is 1st December so make sure you apply soon if you’re interested.

Beginner: From people who have never skied to those who ski with greater confidence. Beginners still need
assistance and they are often nervous to ski at speed.
Intermediate: Skiiers at this level can ski at speed over many different types of snow. However, they still need to
slow down on the higher, faster ski runs.
Advanced: At this level, skiers can move fast even in the most difficult weather conditions. They almost never
lose control of their skis although they are not professional level and so usually remain keen to do further
training.
Expert: Few people ever reach expert level, where a skier can move in any direction, including backwards,
in all kinds of weather. Expert skiers have usually developed their own personal style and can ski
anywhere, at any time.

Candy Hey, Jules. You’ve been working at Pine Needles for a year and I’m thinking of applying for a job as a ski
assistant there. What’s it like?
Jules Well, the wages are awful but there are other perks. For example, you can go skiing for free whenever you
have time off!
Candy But I’m worried about teaching beginners. I’ve never done that before.
Jules Not a problem. You don’t teach the customers. You just check they have the right equipment. You explain the
rules of the camp, and you take orders from the instructors. Good communcation skills are a must.
Candy But what are the instructors like? Are they very strict?
Jules Well they are in charge of safety so they are very careful but, in general, all the staff have been very friendly at
Pine Needles.
Candy Thanks! That answers all my questions!

Hi Chris
Pine Needles Ski resort have already invited me for an interview! I think they like the fact that I live in a village next to the
resort. It is a bit of a dream job for me even though it is just a 1______ role.
My main problem is that my level is only 2______ . I’m better than most people but I don’t think I will ever become an
expert. According to the information online, people at my level usually want to do extra 3______ so perhaps I’ll mention that
in my interview.
One big advantage I have is that I can speak German and French. I’ve been told that 4______ are essential in this role. All the
candidates will be able to ski, but my languages may help me to get the job!
