Lesson
Composing an argumentative essay
1
What’s In
Before we start with the lesson, let us first review what you remember about
essays. Supply the needed word/s to complete the description of an essay.
CHOICES:
restate flow topic to inform
topic sentence readers thesis statement transitions
Too much social media lessens our physical activities. We spend most of our
time staring on the screen, chatting, commenting, reacting and even stalking people.
We need to exercise. There are lots of outdoor and indoor activities which we can do
like jogging, Zumba dancing, stationary biking, gardening and even doing household
chores. These are enough to make us perspire and enjoy the fresh air.
To summarize, life is better with less use of social media. We will be healthier
and fitter if we use our time in physical activities as we enjoy nature. We can have a
private and bash-free life if we moderately post our pictures and activities in any
social media platform. We can better enjoy our family if we spend intimate time with
them instead of the virtual experiences being replaced by technology. It is high time
that we lessen social media activities and use more of the basic way of
communication if needed.

After Reading Activity
Let us analyze the essay ‘On Social Media” by answering these questions:
3. What did the writer mention to rebutt or counter those who say that social
media helps connect with relatives and friends?
_____________________________________________________________________
The argumentative essay entitled “On Social Media” contains the typical
structure of an essay. It starts with an introduction which describes the topic. The
body contains well-structured paragraphs that present reasons and evidence to
support the author’s claim. The last paragraph contains concluding sentences that
provide the audience with a resolution.
⮚ In the introduction, a writer starts the paragraph with a hook to catch the
attention of the readers. It is followed by a short background information
about the topic and the thesis statement which summarizes the main point
of the essay.
a. Why do you think a question used as a hook can attract the reader’s
attention? _____________________________________________________________
b. Aside from asking a question, what are other examples of a hook or
attention-getting sentences? ____________________________________________
c. In an argumentative essay, what does the writer express in the thesis
statement? ____________________________________________________________
⮚ The body comprises three or more paragraphs that explain the reasons to
support the thesis. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence stating the
reason/claim and should be supported by evidence/s.

⮚ Included in the body of an argumentative essay is the author’s rebuttal in
which the writer addresses an opposing point of view to disprove it by
presenting his counter-arguments.
Ex: Some people may disagree with me because they think that social
media helps us to connect with relatives and friends especially during
this pandemic. On the contrary, social media sets family apart.
⮚ For the conclusion, the writer restates the thesis statement and summarizes
the arguments given in the body of the essay. A call to action statement can
be a final statement which can leave an impact to the readers. This serves as
an appeal to the readers’ emotion and convince them.
f. Read again the last sentence of the conclusion (It is high time that we
lessen social media activities and use more of the basic way of
communication, if needed). How do you think will this statement affect
the readers? ___________________________________________________________
EXAMPLE:
Have you ever imagined coming to school wearing your Outfit of the Day
(OOTD)? It would have been cool displaying your fashion statement to your
classmates but sadly, the school guard did not allow you to enter the campus
because of NO UNIFORM, NO ENTRY POLICY. It may be frustrating on your part
but I believe that wearing of school uniform is budget-friendly for the parents
and effort-free for students as well.
✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.
✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.

Activity 2. Writing the body of an essay
Compose the body of the essay using the same topic of No Cellphone Policy
in School. Answer the question you will find after the example and develop your
answer with at least two reasons supported by evidence. Read the example and use
it as your guide. Write your paragraphs on one whole sheet of paper.
EXAMPLE:
Why must students wear proper uniform?
First, wearing of uniform lessens the parents’ expenses in buying clothes for
their children. Students will be wearing uniform every day and two to three sets
will be enough for the entire week. However, without a uniform, students should
have more clothes to avoid wearing the same clothes very often. Thus, it will
mean a financial burden for parents.
Secondly, students will not be stressed in choosing what to wear for the
day. They don’t need to spend a great amount of time and effort to decide what
to mix and match from their wardrobe. Therefore, preparation prior to going to
school is less tasking and time consuming.
✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.
✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.

Complete this statement with a counter-argument:
Many students oppose the banning of cellphones in school because they think
a cellphone is needed for research purposes; however, I believe that allowing the use
of cellphones inside the school can…_____________________________________________.
✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.
✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.
EXAMPLE
To conclude, the school uniform policy has more advantages because it helps
both parents and students to lessen the money spent on buying clothes as well as the
effort and time to prepare before going to school. Aside from earning knowledge and
skills, education is the time to be practical, economical and compliant. The policy of
wearing proper uniform before entering the school is a good training for students to
acquire these virtues. In the meantime, students must enjoy wearing their uniform
while they are in their best shape and capture themselves with a lot selfies and
groupies for photo op. Surely, time will come that these pictures will just be part of
their memories. #highschoollife
