DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

Grade 8
A. Content Standard
Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of comets, meteors and asteroids.
B. Performance Standard
Discuss whether or not beliefs and practices about comets about meteors have scientific bases
C. Learning Competency:

Compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the of a 60-minute period, students should be able to:

1. Discuss the origin and fact about comets, asteroids and meteors.
2. Draw how impact craters are formed when a meteor or asteroid hits Earth.
3. Value the importance and occurrence of comets, meteors, and asteroids.

II. CONTENT
Topic: Comets, Asteroids and Meteors

A. References: Teaching Guide: 103-111 pp.

Learner’s Guide: 153-165 pp.
B. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Video Clip, Pictures, Activity sheets, Wheel of
Names
C. Subject Concept: Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors also are considered as celestial objects that
orbit round the sun. They are available in several sizes and shapes. Asteroids follow a rather
elliptical orbit, a comet could be a fuzzy, luminous big dirty snowball composed of rock dust
wrapped around a giant ball of ice. Comet has the following parts: the nucleus, head, and tail.
Meteor could be a piece of a stony or metallic object which all travels in space and every one
features a great impact on the planet when reaches the earth’s surface.
D. Subject Integration: English (EN7SS-II-c-1.5.3) Use a search engine to conduct a
guided search on a given topic
E. Values Integration: Give value and importance on the occurrence of comets, meteors,
and asteroids for they hold the key material of knowing our
origin.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Checking of Assignment
4. Recalling of Classroom Rules
5. Morning Kick-In

B. Developing Activities
1. Review
We’ve been curious inside the Earth
and we have lots of things we are
already known. Now class, Are you
been curious what having outside the
Earth? Or what we called us the
Universe?
Yes, ma’am.
Let’s start, I will show you pictures that
only found in the universe and identify
each picture.

Picture 1. Sun
Picture 2. Earth
Picture 3. Asteroids
Picture 4. Comet The answers vary according to the
Picture 5. Meteor knowledge of the students.
Picture 6. Asteroids belts

Later you will see if your answers are

correct!

2.Motivation
Now, I have here pictures of three
different objects found outside Earth.
What are these? Those are comets, meteors and
asteroids ma’am.
Nicely said! Now, I will divide the
class into 3 groups of which each group
will be given one picture and I want
you to describe each picture using its
name acronym. You only have to select
3 letters to describe the picture. A
sample is given and you only have three
minutes to do it and present it to class. Definitely Ma’am!
Am I clear?

Okay! You may now proceed with the

activity. After three minutes, present
your output to the class. Students are doing the activity.

After three minutes…Presentation of

outputs
Yes Ma’am!
Okay! Nicely done! Did you enjoy?

C. Presentation of the lesson

Now, out from the activity we just did, It’s all about comets, meteors and
what do you our topic for today? asteroids ma’am.

Very good! Our topic for topic is all

about the celestial bodies- comets,
meteors and asteroids. What are those
again? Those are objects that are found outside
earth.

Before we begin indulging ourselves

with the lesson, let us first set our
objectives and unlock the following
difficult terms.

Kindly read everyone! Students are reading.

D. Discussion

Okay! Now we are all set, let us now

watch this video to give us an overview
or background of these different
celestial body. Questions will be ask
afterwards so better jot down note, are
you ready? Yes Ma’am!
Okay!

Video presentation…. Students are watching.

After video presentation, questions are
ask. Randomly calling students using
wheel of names. Students are answering.
Now, to further elaborate the video
presentation, I have here my PPT
presentation to deeply discuss and learn
more about comets, meteors and
asteroids.

Teacher elaborating the video

presentation with the use of PPT
presentation…. After the discussion.

Now, I am done presenting, it’s your

turn now to present to the class the
different characteristics of the heavenly
bodies mentioned and its difference
with each other.

Teacher use wheel of names to call out

someone to answer. Some characteristics of a comet are
vague, bright big dirty snowball
composed of rock dust covered around
a massive ball of ice. Meteors stone-
like but made from several minerals and
rich in silicon and oxygen, “iron”,
consisting mainly of iron and nickel, or
“stony- ron”, a mix of the 2.Lastly,
asteroids they simply rocky or metallic
objects orbiting the sun within the same
way that planets orbit.

Magnificent!

Now, I will show you another short

video and I want you to analyze and
give your thoughts about it. Yes Ma’am!
Understood?

Video Presentation….
It talks about the impact of a meteor as
What does the video talk about? it hits the Earth.

Very good! When meteors hit the Earth,

they formed what we called craters and
has caused destruction of to our mother
nature. Can we control it? No Ma’am.

Why? It’s because it’s a natural phenomenon

and we don’t hold control about it.

So what do we do to avoid any casualty We have to listen to news and follow

especially human casualty? our government’s warning and what to
do.

Very good!

Now, in your own opinion, what is the

importance of the occurrence of They are important to understand our
comets, meteors, and asteroids? solar system ma’am.

Nicely said! It is believed that comets,

meteors, and asteroids are relics of the
material that formed our solar system.
Now, what is the importance of
knowing the relic material that formed
our solar system? We will be able to know our origin
Ma’am.

Very good! Knowing about the comets,

meteors, and asteroids and its distinct
characteristics might be the key in
knowing our origin.

Now, questions so far? None so far Ma’am!

Is everything understood? Yes Ma’am!

Okay!

E. Application
Let us now have a pair activity. So
listen carefully with the
instruction okay? Yes Ma’am!

Teacher giving instruction about the

pair activity. Afterwards...

Time’s up! Let us now present your

activity to the class.

Presentation of activity… Students are presenting.

Nicely done all of you! Let us give Students are giving round of applause
ourselves a round of applause. to themselves.

F. Generalization
Overall, what can you say about comets,
meteors, and asteroids? These are heavenly bodies found
outside Earth.

Other else? They have different characteristics.

Like what? Comets are small, icy dirtballs. Meteors

is a space rock that enters Earth. Lastly,
asteroids are small, rocky orbit.

How are comets, meteors, and asteroids

important to us? In what way? They are relic from the outer space that
could explain our origin ma’am.

Very good!

Questions so far? None Ma’am.

Shall we have our evaluation now? Definitely Ma’am!

G. Evaluation
So, an answer sheet will be distributed
and you will answer it within five
minutes only. Am I clear? Yes Ma’am!

Quiz time….. Students are answering the quiz.

QUIZ
My Characteristics
Directions: After exploring the amazing asteroids,
comets, and meteors, test yourself if you can compare
and differentiate the three: comets, meteors, and
asteroids. Below are some characteristics of comets,
meteors, and asteroids (1-15).
Choose from the following (A-G), and write the
letters before each characteristic on the space before
the number.

I believe you are now done. Let’s us

check your quiz.

Checking of the quiz…

Students are checking the quiz.
Wow! All of you got almost perfect
scores. So I believe that you got the
lesson well.

asteroid by interviewing your parents
or elderly members of the family of
any sources available at home.
2. Choose at least 3 superstitions.
3. Discuss each superstition with your
family to answer the question: Do
superstitions about comets, meteors,
and asteroids have scientific basis?
Why or Why not?
4. List down as much scientific
evidence to support yours answer to the
question.
Write it down on a 1 whole sheet of
paper.

Are you done copying?

If you find the assignment difficult,
