VSAT Daphine

VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal and is a satellite ground station that enables two-way communication via satellites for data, voice, and video. VSAT networks can be structured in a star-based or mesh topology comprising a central hub, satellite, and numerous VSAT earth stations. While traditionally using a hub configuration, mesh VSAT networks are emerging that enable direct VSAT-to-VSAT communication and reduce delays. VSAT systems have applications in internet access, distance learning, telemedicine, and more, but also have constraints like line-of-sight requirements and latency.

VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal, it is a satellite ground station enabling two-
way communication for data, voice, and video via satellites. Depending upon applications of
use, VSATs are used at various frequency bands viz. L Band, C Band, Extended C Band, Ku
Band and Ka Band. [1].

Figure 1: VSAT Topology

Operation of VSAT Networks:VSAT networks can be structured in a star-based or mesh

topology. It comprises three components: a central hub, the satellite, and numerous VSAT
earth stations across the country VSAT systems comprise a small dish antenna, transceiver,
and a Network Operations Center (NOC), facilitating communication via satellite links with
microwave technology. NOC ensures network management for seamless connectivity. Managed
by a Service Provider, VSAT networks traditionally use Hub configuration, but Mesh VSAT
networks are emerging, enabling direct VSAT-to-VSAT communication, and reducing delays.

Constraints: Line-of-Sight, Power Requirements, Regulatory Restrictions [3].

Applications: Internet Access, Distance Learning, Telemedicine, SCADA Systems, Military
and Defense [3].
Advantages of VSAT: The setup of a VSAT station is convenient and flexible. The VSAT
system is robust against natural disasters. Cost-effective setup and operation in tough geo-
graphic areas. Efficient transmission of audio, video, and data signals [4]

2
Disadvantages of VSAT: Latency: Approximately 500 milliseconds round trip. Environ-
mental conditions affect performance. Clear view requirement for external antenna. Limited
Bandwidth. Higher Cost [4].
Companies Using VSAT Currently: Maritime Industry: Inmarsatships , Energy Re-
sources: Hughes Network Systems and Viasat [5].
Defense Government: Orbital Sciences Corporation, L3Harris Technologies and Aviation: Pana-
sonic Avionics, Global Eagle Entertainment [5].
Starlink: Elon Musk’s venture and Cobham SATCOM [5].
