Berthing: Port of Osaka, Japan with Pilot On Board.

Narrator:
Scenario: Vessel, M/V Polar Tang, a bulk carrier, loaded with SBM (soya
beans meal), approaching the port of Osaka, Japan with Pilot on Board.
Master on the bridge assisted by Chief Officer and helmsman in the steering
wheel. Bridge Check List was already prepared and the Master and the Pilot
are exchanging information. Engine telegraph in slow ahead, steered to 118°.

Pilot: Good morning Captain, welcome to Japan!!


Master: Good morning Mr. Pilot, Thank you. This is our pilot card.
Pilot: Ok, Captain your berth assignment is berth number 7, we will berth
port side alongside, we will use two tugs captain, one tug made
fast in starboard bow, one tug will be pushing tug. Our mooring
arrangement will be 4 -2, first line will be spring line Master.
Master: Ok, Mr. Pilot, Thank you! We will berth port side alongside in berth,
number 7. We will use two tugs, one tug made fast in starboard
bow and one tug will assist to push the vessel alongside. Mooring
arrangement will be 4 – 2. First line is spring line.
Pilot: Ok, Master.
Master: (using walkie-talkie) Attention forward and aft! 2x. Stand-by to
made fast the tug, one tug to be made fast to starboard board and
one tug to assist the vessel alongside. Mooring arrangement is 4 –
2. First line will be spring line.
Forward: Copy Captain. Stand-by to made fast tug on starboard bow. 4 – 2
arrangement. First line will be spring line. Over.
Aft: (using walkie-talkie) Copy Captain. 4 – 2 arrangement, first line will
be first line. Standing-by. Over.

Narrator: As the vessel is nearing the berth, two tugs arrived and the
forward station receives the tug line to make fast on the starboard
bow.

Pilot: Captain pick up the forward tug and made fast to starboard bow.
Master: Ok Mr. Pilot. Forward, please pick up the tug and make fast on the
starboard bow.
Forward: Ok Captain pick up forward tug.

Narrator: As the forward station made fast the tug line…..

Forward: Bridge. This is forward station. Forward tug made fast on starboard
bow. Over.
Master: Ok, thank you forward. Keep clear of the line. Mr. Pilot forward tug
made fast in the starboard bow.
Pilot: Thank you captain! Ok, stop engine and amidships the wheel.
Master: Stop engine. Amidships the wheel.
C/O: Stop engine!
Helmsman: Amidships!
C/O: Engine stop now sir!
Helmsman:Rudder amidships now sir!
Master: Ok, thank you! Mr. Pilot, rudder amidships and engine stop now!

Narrator: As the vessel slowly approaches the berth…….

Pilot: Captain, prepare to send the spring lines.


Master: Forward and aft prepare to send the spring line.
Forward: Bridge! The linemen signaled to send the line.
Pilot: Ok Captain, send forward and aft spring line.
Master: Forward and aft send the spring line.
Forward: Copy Captain.
Aft: Copy Captain.

-----Action forward and aft, simulate sending spring lines----

Narrator: Using the heaving lines, forward and aft stations will send the
spring lines and after making fast, next will be the four headlines
and four stern lines which will be made fast by the linemen at
berth.

Forward: Bridge, this is forward. First line made fast.


Master: Ok! First line made fast. Send all headlines.
Forward: Ok Captain, copy. Send all headlines.
Aft: Bridge, Aft. Spring line made fast.
Master: Ok, thank you send all stern lines.
Aft: Ok Captain send all stern lines.
Master: Ok Mr. Pilot forward and aft spring lines made fast and now
sending the headlines and stern lines.
Pilot: Thank you Captain. You can finish the wheel and after making fast
all lines. Let go the forward tug.

Narrator: After making fast all lines……

Forward: Bridge, forward lines all fast.


Aft: Bridge, aft lines all fast.
Master: Ok thank you. Forward, let go tug.
Forward: Copy Captain, let go the tug.
Master: Ok, after letting go to the tug. Put rat guards to all lines.

(Play telephone ringing) Ring….ring…..ring……


Master: (on the phone to the engine room) Hello engine room. Finish with
the engine. Thank you.
Forward: Bridge, forward tug casted off.
Master: Ok thank you. Forward and aft, after putting all rat guards prepare
the port gangway for pilot disembarkation.
Forward & Aft: Ok noted Captain.
Narrator: After making fast all lines, AIS status changed to moored, switch off
navigational lights, BNWAS, and stand-by both RADARs and ECDIS. Rat
guards are installed and the pilot shall disembarked shore side by the
gangway. Before the ship can start its operations, the vessel must be cleared
by the authorities. Such as, the Quarantine, Immigration, Customs and as per
local port regulations. Documents were prepared prior the arrival. And, upon
arrival ship’s agent will assist the Master and officers during the port
formalities. After being cleared, the vessel can start its operations.
