Setup and Configuration

EDDL technology allows for easy configuration of field devices from different manufacturers using a single software system. Plants have hundreds or thousands of devices that need to be configured. Configuration can be done using a handheld field communicator or configuration software based on EDDL. EDDL makes configuration easier through user guidance like wizards and expertise from device manufacturers, resulting in faster startup. Technical white papers and videos further explain intelligent device configuration and setup using EDDL.

Setup/Configuration

You may have been wondering if all devices around the plant can be
configured using the same single software. With a system based on EDDL
it is easy. The information provided here includes many examples of setup
of simple and sophisticated (complex) devices and serves to explain how
the device manufacturers make it easy to configure their device from any
system.

Plants have hundreds or thousands of devices of different types from

different manufacturers which they must be able to configure.

Configuration of field devices is can be done using handheld field

communicator or intelligent device management software based on EDDL,
whichever suits the task at hand best.

EDDL technology makes device setup easier thanks to user guidance such
as wizards as well as know-how made available from the device
manufacturer's experts. The result is faster startup.

What setup is possible for intelligent devices is not well understood and
will therefore be explained in technical white papers and videos below.
The importance of EDDL for configuration is also explained.

EDDL technology supports small portable field communicators for easy

configuration in the field, there is no other way to achieve a comparable
result.

What is parameterization?
The word parameterization is derived from the German word
“parametrisierung” and refers to configuration/setting of parameters in a
device to change the way the device operates. It is used to distinguish from
“configuration” which might also include selection, linking, and
scheduling of function blocks. For instance, portable tools like a handheld
field communicator or laptop with interface and software are typically
capable of parameterization; changing the values of parameters, but not
able to add, delete, or link function blocks.

What is device commissioning?

Device commissioning are the steps required for putting the device into
service. This may include things like communication settings,
configuration, and connecting the device, as well as calibration and other
tuning required for the device to operate. These aspects are explained in
detail in the configuration tutorial and calibration tutorial respectively.

How do I commission a smart

device?
A smart device is configured and calibrated before it is put into service.
This is usually done using a portable tool such as a handheld field
communicator or laptop with interface and software. These aspects are
explained in detail in the configuration tutorial and calibration tutorial
respectively.

How do I commission a Fieldbus

device?
A Fieldbus device is recognized by its tag. The tag is usually assigned
before the device is connected to the bus such that the system can
automatically assign and address and download the configuration to the
device without any person having to touch the system software – the
person uses only a screwdriver. Assigning a tag prior to connecting the
device to the bus is not required, but then a person must instead manually
make the system accept the device. Some systems require the address to be
assigned before connecting it to the bus. The device configuration is
usually downloaded from the system as part of the commissioning process.
These aspects are explained in detail in the configuration tutorial and
calibration tutorial respectively.

How do I provision a wireless

device?
A wireless device is recognized by its tag. A network ID is required for the
device to know which of many networks to join. A join key is required for
security. The tag, network ID, and join key are assigned using a portable
tool such as a handheld field communicator or laptop with interface and
software. A wireless device is configured and calibrated before it is put
into service. This is usually done using a portable tool such as a handheld
field communicator or laptop with interface and software. These aspects
are explained in detail in the configuration tutorial and calibration tutorial
respectively.

How do I document device

configuration changes?
Intelligent Device Management (IDM) software part of an Asset
Management System (AMS) can automatically document configuration
changes by logging it as an event in an audit trail. A unique characteristic
of EDDL technology is that enables audit trail for all devices, not just
some. Changes not made from the IDM software, for instance from a
portable tool such as a handheld field communicator or laptop with
interface and software cannot be logged with as much detail. Audit trail is
explained in detail in the configuration tutorial.

What is a configuration audit

trail?
An audit trail is an event log. Configuration changes made from the IDM
software are logged time stamped and include information such as who
made the change and annotations explaining why the change was made. A
unique characteristic of EDDL technology is that enables audit trail for all
devices, not just some. Audit trail is explained in detail in the configuration
tutorial.

What is a device template?

A device configuration template is a file that contains the standard
configuration to be used for a particular device. The device manufacturer
may provide a recommended device configuration template, but plants may
also develop their own enterprise- or site- specific device configuration
templates with corporate preferences. Device templates are explained in
detail in the configuration tutorial.

Can changes be made to safety-

related devices?
4-20 mA/HART devices used as part of a Safety Instrumented Function
(SIF) must be write protected by a hardware switch or jumper because
HART is not a safety protocol.
