7. Finishing of Concrete
• It is done to give a better appearance to concrete surface.
• Concrete is basically used because of its high compressive strength but the
Appearance in not that uniform , to make uniform, finishing is done.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Water-Cement Ratio
• The water-cement ratio (w/c) is one of the major factors but not
the only one influencing the strength of concrete.

• For complete hydration of cement under controlled conditions

the water requirement is about 38 per cent.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Water-Cement Ratio
• For Proper Workability : w/c Ratio – ( 0.4 – 0.6)
• Maximum Strength at w/c Ratio = 0.4 (minimum capillary
cavities)

• When w/c Ratio < 0.4 than :

1. Improper Consistency
2. Workability of Cement
3. Honeycombed structure is obtained.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Water-Cement Ratio
• Concrete Compacted by vibrator displays
higher strength even at lower water cement
ratio (w/c ratio = 0.3)

• When w/c Ratio > 0.6 than :

1. Porosity Increases
2. Strength Decreases
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Water-Cement Ratio
Final NOTE:
Lesser Water Cement Ratio
More Strength (Chances of Segregation)

High Water Cement Ratio

Less Strength (Chances of Bleeding)
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Duff Abhram’s Law

• According to Abrahm’s law it is evident that strength of
concrete depends only upon w/c ratio provided the mix is
workable.

NOTE:
Strength at any w/c ratio is a function of following:
1. Degree of hydration of cement, its physical and chemical
properties.
2. Temperature at which hydration takes place.
3. Air content in case of air entrained concrete.
4. Change in the w/c ratio.
5. Formation of cracks due to bleeding and shrinkage.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Gel-Space Ratio (X)

• Gel-space ratio is defined as the ratio of volume
of hydrated cement paste to the sum of the
volumes of the hydrated cement and that of the
capillary pores.

• Power and Brownyard established a

relationship between the strength and gel-
space ratio.

3
S = 240X
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Gel-Space Ratio (X)

• Gel-space ratio is defined as the ratio of volume
of hydrated
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete
• The most useful property of concrete is its
compressive strength. However, it is weak in tension.

• For Quality Control of concrete, test play an

important role as it helps :
1. To achieve higher efficiency of the materials
2. Greater Assurance of the performance of the
concrete
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete

• Cement, fine aggregate and coarse aggregate (up to 38

mm) to be used for making concrete
• Room Temperature : 27± 2°C
• Humidity : 90%
• The cement and sand are mixed thoroughly till a uniform
colour is achieved.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete
• The coarse aggregate are then added and mixed till
these are distributed uniformly throughout the mix.

• The water is then added and the entire batch mixed

untill the concrete appears to be homogeneous and
has the desired consistency.

• The test specimens recommended are 150 × 150

× 150 mm cubes or cylinders of 150 mm diameter
and 300 mm height.

• The mixed concrete is filled into the moulds in layers of 50

mm to achieve full compaction.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete
• Each layer of mix so placed is tamped with bar, 16
mm in diameter and 600 mm long, 35 times or with
a vibrator.

• After this period the specimens are removed from

the moulds and placed in water and kept there until
taken out just prior to test.

• Normally, the recognized age of test of specimens is

7 and 28 days.
• At least three specimens, preferably from different
batches, are tested at each selected age.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete
• The compression testing machine should be able to
apply gradual load of 14 N/mm2/minute.

• Until the specimen is crushed.

SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

Strength of Concrete
• The average of the three values is taken as the
compressive strength of concrete of the batch,
provided the individual variation is not more
than ±15% of the average.
SSC JE | Revision in One Shot | Time : 9PM |

between the particles.

• The Factors are:

1. Water Content
