CATALOGUE COURSE DESCRIPTION

Matrix operations, inverses and determinants; elementary combinatorics; introduction to probability;

random variables; binomial, normal and Poisson distributions; basic integral calculus; introduction to
differential equations; partial derivatives and extremal points of multivariable functions.
Prerequisite: MATH 101 or MATH 203. Not open to students majoring in Economics.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the completion of the course, a student will be able to:

• Compute partial derivatives of functions of several variables and apply the second
derivative test for a function of two variables to determine relative maxima, relative minima
and saddle point.
• Compute integrals for continuous functions.
• Use algebraic techniques such as substitution, integration by parts to evaluate integrals.
• Use integrals to calculate the area of a region.
• Solve simple differential equations and initial value problems.
• Apply the fundamentals of set operations, counting methods, basic notions of probability, and
the computations of probabilities for selected statistical environments.
• Identify certain probability distributions (such as Binomial, Normal and Poisson
distribution) and be able to fit real life situations to these models.
• Apply operations on matrices and use matrix reduction to solve a linear system.
• Find the determinant of square matrices using different methods.
• Use the determinant method (Cramer’s rule) to solve a linear system.
• Find the inverse of a matrix (if it exists), using cofactors method and elementary row operations.

Final Exam

3/4
STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Grade Distribution: Grades will be based upon total points received from:

• Max (Quiz I, Quiz II) ………...….…. 30%

• Min (Quiz I, Quiz II) ………………. 25%
• Final Exam……………………….… 45%

The two quizzes and the final exam will be held on campus, if the situation doesn’t allow for it,
then the quizzes will be given online (Moodle based with Respondus), in this case selected students
according to their performance, will be given short quizzes or online interviews, and the results will
be counted with their quiz grade.

By signing up for this course, you confirm that you have read and accepted the terms and provisions
of AUB’s Privacy Statement. COURSE POLICIES

• The grade for an unexcused missed quiz will be a zero. However, upon presenting a valid
excuse or a valid medical report from AUB health centers within one week of the quiz date,
and after taking the approval of the course instructor and the course coordinator, a makeup
will be done.

• You are expected to attend all class meetings. If you are unable to attend class meetings, it is
your responsibility to inform the instructor prior to the class meeting. Absences will be dealt
with on a case-by-case basis.

• The university policy regarding incomplete work, attendance and other issues will be
followed. Check the AUB catalogue for details.

• Students are responsible for all the material presented in class meetings, including
announcements about course procedure. Students who miss classes are responsible for
any announcement made during their absences.

• The syllabus, some previous quizzes and some extra sheets will be posted on Moodle.

• Only basic scientific calculators are allowed (Graphic and programmable calculators are NOT
allowed)
• Normally, we use curving that assigns grades to students relative to the class as a whole, based
on their performance (Class evaluation, attendance, short quizzes, homework …), students that
miss 5 or more class meetings will not be put on the curve and will not get any raise on the
final average at the end of the semester.

Withdrawal Thursday April 13, 2023 is the last day for withdrawal from the course.
