Zentangle is ...
Zentangle® is an easy to learn, relaxing and fun way to create
beautiful images by drawing structured patterns called tangles.
Zentangle improves focus, stimulates creativity, increases
confidence, reduces stress, and quiets a restless mind.
A Zentangle is:
• unplanned: it grows organically, the results surprise you

other obstacles that often hinder creativity or even prevent people from creating art at all.
For this reason Zentangles are intended to be as little like drawing pictures as possible.

Patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene,
are not tangles. For example, floral patterns are not usually tangles.
“It’s also why (for the most part) we give our tangles names that have
little relationship with what a tangle looks like,” writes co-founder Rick
Roberts. “We usually choose names that don’t create a preconception of
how a tangle should look.”
FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY - DO NOT DISTRIBUTE OR COPY
This is the heart of the Zentangle Method. By eliminating recognizable objects or scenes —
and thus the associated “thinking” that goes with them — we become totally focused on each
stroke of the abstract, structured pattern-making that grows organically into the usually-
surprising end result. This process intentionally short-circuits the restless mind and facilitates
the pleasurable calm we experience in our Zentangle practice.
Characteristics of a tangle
A tangle is a single pattern. A Zentangle is the finished art on a tile containing one (a
monotangle), two (a duotangle), or more tangles. Tangles are “magical, simple and easy to
create. They should be easy to teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.”
P a tangle is abstract, non-objective (non-representational)
P a tangle has no up or down orientation — there’s no “right side up”
P a tangle is usually an overall pattern that grows organically, rather than a single
motif. Zentangle is about “the repetition of a stroke, not the repetition of a
drawing.”
P generally a tangle is at most 2 or 3 simple elemental strokes, repeated
P a tangle never starts with pencil: it’s simple enough to draw without using pre-
printed grids or pencil dots or guidelines that are later erased
P a tangle never uses rulers, stencils, or any other mechanical or digital aids
P a tangle is elegant, unique

Here are some fun and innovative ways fellow tanglers use the
Using the Guide to TANGLE GUIDE to select tangles.
select tangles 1. Lynne Donovan prints the Guide and numbers each tangle.
Then she uses a random number generator to pick tangles.
You can use an app on your smartphone or use the RANDOM
SELECTOR I’ve added on the sidebar on the site. “No cheat-
ing! You have to use the one the machine picks!”
2. CZT Suzanne McNeill has a similar but no-tech idea in keep-
ing with Zentangle. Number the pattern columns across
from 1-5 and the rows down from 1-6. Using dice, roll one
to choose the column and another for the row. Use the
tangle where the two rolled numbers intersect.
3. Print the tangle pages on light card stock then cut them
into “chips”. Put the chips into a bag or an attractive con-
tainer. Mix them well and draw the number of chips you
need. Homeschool teacher Faron writes, “Now, when we
need a break, or on art days, we reach into the bag and
pull a few patterns and enjoy a few peace-filled hours!”

“Draw your tangles more deliberately. Zentangle is not like any other art form.
You want to draw every LINE deliberately, enjoying watching your pen create
each line. The patterns fill the spaces created by the string. The string is just a
suggestion and not a demand to where you put your tangles. You may start
to place your tangle in one area, but maybe you want to finish that space with
another tangle or leave it blank.”

TANGLE OR DOODLE?
Make sure your pattern meets the criteria distinguishing a tangle from a doodle. Zentan-
gle® is not about planning and making pictures. A pattern is not always a tangle. Tangles
have very specific attributes:
• They do not start with pencil planning. They must be simple enough to draw without a
preprinted grid or pencil marks that are later erased, or using rulers or stencils etc.
• They are abstract, non-objective (non-representational) – they are not a representation
of a recognizable natural or actual object, figure, or scene.
• They have no up or down orientation – no “right side up”.
• Generally they are at most 2 or 3 simple lines/strokes repeated. Tangles are easy to
teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.
• They are elegant, unique. Steps for a pattern should NOT be drawn on graph paper or
paper with gridlines.
• Why hasn’t my pattern been published?

On understanding Zentangle ®
The following article, A post with no pictures, by Texas CZT Sandy Hunter
was posted on her blog https://tanglebucket.blogspot.com and with her
permission the article also appeared here on TanglePatterns. Again with
Sandy’s kind permission, her article is reprinted here in its entirety.
“I don’t really care what the ‘rules’ of Zentangle are! I’m not a rule-follower … it’s my art
and I’ll do what I want!”
I see this subject get kicked around on Zentangle fan forums from time to time. I
don’t normally engage because I don’t really feel like handing angry people a stick to
beat me with, but it’s hard for me to see something so inherently good and useful be
misunderstood. So, I want to try to explain it. Please bear in mind that this is my own
point of view and I’m not representing anyone else.
Books and Pinterest and YouTube videos are all wonderful sources for patterns
for doodling/tangling/patterning/line weaving…. but all of those words are used
interchangeably, and that’s where the conflict arises. The confusion seems to come from
the fact that that people will refer to any intricate piece of line art as Zentangle, because
they think that’s just the latest buzzword for ‘that thing I was already doing years ago in the
margins of notebooks’.
It is possible to place identical drawings side by side where one is a doodle, and the other
is a Zentangle. The reason that’s possible is because the art itself does not make a drawing
a Zentangle. The art is the byproduct of the complete mental immersion in the process
of ‘tangling’. It all depends on where your mind is when you do it. If you’re in this for the
art, these guidelines don’t matter one iota. Doodle/draw/sketch away. But if you’re craving
a temporary, effective escape plan from pain, grief, or stress (or you just need a mental
break) read on, because this information just might come in handy one day.
Yes, the rumors are true: there are guidelines (they’re just roads to a destination, really)
with Zentangle. And they don’t exist to crush your spirit. Think of them as stout little
pillars that work together to support a single purpose: to refocus the mind. Zentangle
is mindful. Every guideline exists to make that complete mental immersion possible,
and sustain it. That’s no easy task in a fast-paced culture (with a constant barrage of
distractions) like ours.

#1: The first step in starting a Zentangle: a border and ’string’, drawn lightly in
pencil.
Reason: The pencil line, or string, creates sections to draw within. The string line is
merely a suggestion and a place to begin. It is drawn lightly in pencil so that it will
disappear behind the ink that follows. Some people have never faced a blank piece
of paper and been intimidated and overwhelmed by it, but for those who have,
something as simple as having a place to start is a huge relief and can easily mean
the difference between success and failure.
81
Buyer: Oliver Harder (o.harder@t-online.de)
Transaction ID: 3CH94632UU0332217
portable (Doctor’s waiting room? No problem. Two-hour wait for an oil change?
Yes please!). And because it’s small, it’s easy to turn, making drawing in one
direction over another more comfortable.
#8: No erasers.
Reason: Anything that interrupts the drawing process is going to create a shift
in focus. Then it becomes less about drawing those slow deliberate lines and
breathing, and more about fixing/changing stuff. Just keep drawing and let it
evolve. Get comfortable with the idea that mistakes can be turned into something
good and unexpected (and exciting!).
If you’re not a rule-follower, it’s ok. Not following these steps does not mean
your line art is in any way bad or wrong; it just means it’s not technically a
Zentangle. I’m a CZT and 99% of what I draw isn’t technically Zentangle… I’m
here for the art too. It’s good to know the difference, but don’t let it be a label
and keep you from enjoying the journey.

Zentangle Terminology
These pages contain the definitions on the ZENTANGLES > ZENTANGLE TERMINOLOGY
page on the top menu bar of any page on TanglePatterns.com. Visit that page for updated
and new terms as they are added throughout the year.
This is a collection of Zentangle®-related terms for inquiring minds. Although
TanglePatterns is not affiliated with the official site, I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher
(CZT). Unless noted otherwise definitions italicized and in quotation marks are from the
official Zentangle® website, zentangle.com, or from the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1.
For the Official Zentangle Glossary of Terms page, visit the Zentangle.com site.
Other things to say: “I need to create a Zentangle, right now!” “Sorry, I didn’t hear
you. I was busy tangling.”
Same goes for “Zentangling”. Don’t say it. The correct terms are tangling, or
tangled.
Anchored Auras
Auras that are "tethered" at each end. From Project Pack #15, Day 4 video at 04:14.
Aura
“In the Zentangle Method, a line tracing around the outside or inside of a tangle is
called an aura.”
One of six tangle enhancers along with dewdrop, perfs, rounding, shading and spar-
kle.
In this post on the Zentangle blog, Maria explores a wide variety of creative aura-ing
possibilities.
CZT Adele Bruno has written more about “The Awesome Art of Aura” here on her
blog.
Bijouisms
“Bijou’s thoughts about the Zentangle Method (and life).” Here’s the list of all the
Bijouisms.
Border
Step 1 of creating a Zentangle®.
A border starts with a lightly penciled dot placed in each corner of the tile.
84
Buyer: Oliver Harder (o.harder@t-online.de)
Transaction ID: 3CH94632UU0332217
Then a lightly-penciled line connects the dots near the edges of the tile to frame the
string and its contents.
Coffered Tangles, also Coffer and Coffering
From the Zentangle Mosaic app, January 2019. Maria introduces coffered tangles
noting:
“I use this technique often, when a tangle needs a bit more detail. … ‘coffer’
(noun). Also called caisson, lacunar. In architecture, one of a number of sunken
panels, usually square or octagonal in a vault, ceiling or soffit. You can google ‘cof-
fered ceilings’ to get an idea what they look like. …
I like to coffer (verb?) Hollibaugh. All you do is aura inside the shapes between the
random boards in your tangle, then connect the corners, shape to shape. … Just
make sure there’s enough room to fit the inner aura.“
Here’s a good article that explains copyright on the web in plain English. Just be-
cause something is on the web, it is not “public domain”.
Feel free to refer to the images to recreate tangles in your personal Zentangles and
ZIAs. However the artists and TanglePatterns.com reserve all rights to the images
and they must not be pinned or otherwise reproduced or republished.
CZT®
Certified Zentangle Teacher® – a designation earned by attending and successfully
completing a certification seminar taught by the founders of Zentangle.
Visit the official Zentangle site for more information on becoming a CZT®. You can
also read more about it here on TanglePatterns. Seminars are held in Providence, RI
approximately twice a year.
Deconstruct
“To reduce a pattern to its most elemental constituent strokes so a user of the
Zentangle Method can recreate, or reconstitute, that pattern (tangle) by repeating
those strokes one at a time in a structured sequence.“
Dewdrop
One of six tangle enhancers along with aura, perfs, rounding, shading and sparkle.
85
Buyer: Oliver Harder (o.harder@t-online.de)
Transaction ID: 3CH94632UU0332217
CZT Lynn Mead has posted a tutorial here. Zentangle spells it “dewdrop”, all one
word. Maria explains dewdrop as “drawing a magnified version of a tangle within
the same tangle.“
Dingbatz
A technique introduced in April 2017 on the Zentangle Mosaic app, based on the
typographic dingbat ornament.
Dingsplatz
A technique introduced by the Zentangle folks at 1440 Multiversity in Santa Cruz,
CA in September 2018. A roundish shape is made in the middle of the Zentangle tile
using an Eke-shaped looping line. It is further embellished with auras and filled with
other tangles.
As part of Project Pack #14 Accessing the Artist Within, on Day 7 Maria tangles the
Dingsplatz string technique with Purk and Printemps on the spread with the Thomas
Merton quote, "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time."
(The full video is included on the Purk and Printemps pages.)
Duotangle
Similar to monotangle, a duotangle is a Zentangle tile composed of two tangles.
Elemental Strokes
In deconstructing a tangle, “Usually the number of elemental strokes needed are 3
or less. Often, you only need one or two. By ‘elemental strokes’ we mean a dot, a
straight(-ish) line, a curve (like a parenthesis), a reverse curve (like an ‘S’), and an
orb or circle.“
For an ingenious example of these elemental strokes used together as a tangle, see
CZT Mina Hsiao’s Dicso (not Disco!) tangle.
Embedded Letters Technique
A technique introduced by Maria in a video in the Kitchen Table Tangles series. You
can view the video here on TanglePatterns.
View the complete list of available KTT videos on the ZENTANGLES > ZENTANGLE KTT
VIDEOS page on the top menu bar of any page on the site.
Enhancement
“A technique which can be added to, or combined with, many tangles. Examples
include Aura, Sparkle, Rounding and Dewdrop.“
Enthatching
A playful term by Rick and Maria for a feathery hatching technique using the Micron
pen to add interest to a tangle. Introduced in the Day 3 of Twelve Days of Zentangle
(December 2017) video, together with the tangle Rumpus.

Fragment
“A small pattern that you draw within the spaces of an ink-drawn reticula (grid).”
In the past fragments have been referred to as grid seeds. (See Seeds definition be-
low.) For a chart of some 50 “starter fragments” see the Zentangle® newsletter in
the article Grid (Un)Locked.
“Fragments are little chunks of patterns that when rotated or mirrored and placed
together in a reticulum (framework) create a larger pattern. Think ceramic tiles.
Each tile is a unit and when put together, the elements of each tile work together
to create a larger pattern.
Depending on the tile’s pattern and how the tiles are put together a number of dif-
ferent variations are possible.”
Illumitangles™
Illuminated letters with tangles. Trademarked term owned by calligrapher and CZT
Angie Vangalis.
Inspiration
As of October 12, 2021 - the OFFICIAL name for a group of tangles (see also Penchant:
a group of tanglers). Read all about the whys and wherefores on the Zentangle blog:
"The votes are in."
This term was suggested by Elizabeth W. and selected by Rick and Maria from all
submissions on the post "What do you call a group of tangles?" .
Interstices
“The small spaces between or within tangles.”
Although most of the KTT videos are only available to the subscribers of the paid
version of the app ($2.99/month, or $24.99/year), occasionally Zentangle makes a
KTT video public and I also add it to TanglePatterns.
View the complete list of available KTT videos on the ZENTANGLES > ZENTANGLE KTT
VIDEOS page on the top menu bar of any page on the site.
Lost in Tangleation
Term introduced by Molly and Martha in Day 6 of Project Pack 15 where letters are
used as strings for tangles.
Meta-pattern
“An image that results from drawing two or more tangles touching or near each

Monotangle
A completed Zentangle® composed entirely of a single tangle. Originated on iamthe-
divaczt.blogspot.com.
‘Nzeppling
A term referring to the technique used in tangling the Zentangle-original tangle ‘Nz-
eppel. After the initial grid/reticulum structure is in place, the next step involves
carefully adding a stroke within each space that traces around the outline thus
“squishing” an orb-like shape within.
Official Tangles
The Zentangle-original tangles created and introduced by Zentangle® founders Rick
Roberts, Maria Thomas, and Maria’s daughters Molly Hollibaugh and Martha Huggins.
View the complete list of official tangles by going to ZENTANGLES > LINDA’S LIST OF
OFFICIAL TANGLE PATTERNS on the top menu bar of any page.
Orb
“We wanted a word that described this shape’s essence (rather than ‘circle’) . . . so
that everyone would understand this shape’s beauty is not its circular perfection,
but its organic, full, nourishing, yielding and luscious roundness.”
Penchant
As of October 12, 2021 – the OFFICIAL name for a group of tanglers (see also Inspira-
tion: a group of tangles). Read all about the whys and wherefores on the Zentangle
blog post: "The votes are in."
This term was suggested by Carol L. and selected by Rick and Maria from all submis-
sions on the post “What do you call a group of tangles?” .
Perfs
One of six tangle enhancers along with aura, dewdrop, rounding, shading and spar-
kle. Learn all about it from a CZT®. An example of Perfs can be seen here.
Peppering
Introduced to the public on December 10, 2019, in Day 5 of Project Pack #07, where
Maria’s daughter CZT Martha Huggins explains, “we’ve noticed this fragment filler
kind of popping up in a lot of our work here lately and we’ve decided to call it
peppering because it really resembles the tangle pepper“. Pepper is one of the 102
original “official” tangles.
Reticula (Reticulum = singular)
“Grids or other structures of ink-drawn lines that hold fragments.” Several pages
of example reticula are given in the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1.

Think ceramic tiles. Each tile is a unit and when put together, the elements of each
tile work together to create a larger pattern.
Depending on the tile’s pattern and how the tiles are put together a number of dif-
ferent variations are possible.”
Ribbon Tangles
A term I’ve used to describe tangles that can flow like a ribbon through your tile or
around it like a border.
This also avoid confusion with the term “border” which we use in the Zentangle
Method™ as one of the first steps in creating a Zentangle®.
This type of tangle is sometimes described as “vining”, as it can wander like a vine
around the tile.
Most all ribbon-style tangles can also serve as background or fill tangles by placing
them side-by-side in columns or rows, depending on your “no up or down” perspec-
tive.
Likewise, most grid-based tangles can serve as ribbon-style tangles by using reticula
in a single row/column.
Romanancy
A technique inspired by and named after a photograph taken in Rome by the late
Zentangle employee Nancy Sampson, who tragically died before her time of ALS.
Romanancy is illustrated here on the Zentangle blog along with Maria’s explana-
tion, “I did not see it as a tangle per se, but as an exploration of wrapping tangles,
border-like, over uneven surfaces.“
Rounding
One of six tangle enhancers along with aura, dewdrop, perfs, shading and sparkle.
You can see an example of rounding here in Stage 2 of CZT Marizaan van Beek’s
Shading tutorial. Compare the tile in Steps 1 and 2 to see the difference rounding
makes.

Each square is the “seed” of the overall pattern created when the seed is repeated
in either a regular (including mirroring or rotating) or a totally random fashion
within the spaces of a grid.
In the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1, seeds are termed Fragments and several pages of
examples are included.
Shading
Very light pencil shading adds depth and dimension to a tangle pattern. Forget art
school rules, learn everything you need to know about shading for Zentangle in the
free TanglePatterns Shading Mini-Clinic here. Shading is one of six tangle enhancers
along with aura, dewdrop, perfs, rounding, and sparkle.
Sparkle
One of six tangle enhancers along with aura, dewdrop, perfs, rounding and shading.
Sparkles are often seen in Maria’s Zentangles.
Sproing
A playful term for adding tentacle-like protrusions to an aura, first demonstrated as
part of the Twelve Days of Zentangle, 2017 Edition in this video of Rick tangling Diva
Dance.
String
One or several random free-form pencil lines drawn within the tile’s border, creat-
ing sections within which one adds tangle patterns to create a Zentangle®. “Strings
allow Zentangles to grow without thinking or planning.” An example of a String and
an article about the Importance of Strings is here. Sample strings for you to use are
here on TanglePatterns (also located at STRINGS on the pink alphabetic index bar).
Strings are always drawn with pencil.
Take Off And Land
A technique initially taught in beginner classes using the Zentangle-original tangle
Cadent and also Huggins.
It connects two elements of a motif — in the case of Cadent those are circles, in
other tangles these can be squares or rice shapes — by “taking off” or retracing the
outside edge of the circle with the stroke and “landing” on the outside edge (or the
end in the case of rice shapes) of the second element.
This technique results in a smooth curved transition stroke from one element to the
next.

Tangle
A single structured abstract (i.e., nonrepresentational, nonfigurative, nonobjective,
nonrealistic) pattern created with at most 2 or 3 simple elemental strokes drawn
with a fine-nib black ink pen. Tangles do not represent nor are they intended to rep-
resent any natural or actual object, figure, or scene. Zentangle is not about drawing
“some thing” or picture-making.
Aura and shading are the two most often seen. Dewdrop, Perfs, Rounding and Spar-
kle are the others.

Tile
A 3 1/2-inch x 3 1/2-inch (89 mm x 89 mm) square card of high quality paper (“fine,
individually die-cut printmaking paper selected for its texture and archival charac-
teristics”).
Lynn writes, “While TranZending is based on drawing one tangle on top of another
and then using white to highlight and graphite to shade, TransluZENce is based on
drawing behind and then using graphite to make it look like you are viewing the
background through a translucent media like tissue paper or frosted glass.“
TranZending
Another technique to embellish your Zentangles, first introduced at the June 2017
CZT seminars (CZT#28 and CZT#29) by co-founder Maria Thomas.
In this technique one tangle is layered over another (often with a larger 05 or 08
Micron) and lightly “filled” with white charcoal pencil, then shaded, making the top
layer tangle appear transparent. The result is the underlying tangle appears as if
viewed through a veil or a gauzy layer.
Watch Rick and Maria’s KTT video demonstration of this technique on TanglePat-
terns.
Tucker
From the Zentangle Newsletter, June 14, 2021:
“For many years we have used a technique when creating Zentangle art, but we
never had a name for it. We asked the attendees of CZT #37 to submit their name
suggestions for us to choose from and once and for all give it a name in the Zentan-
gle-world. We are pleased to announce that this technique is officially named Tuck-
er, submitted by Gloria Jo Flynn.”

Z-Through
A technique - "like a reverse tranzending" - introduced by Molly and Martha on Day
9 of Project Pack 16's 2021 Twelve Days of Zentangle - Keeping Score. You can find
the video demonstrating this technique on both the Pangea and Mooka pages.
Zenbutton
A Zentangle-inspired creation developed by Dutch CZT Marguerite Samama. Margue-
rite’s tutorial demonstrating how to create zenbuttons is here on TanglePatterns.
CZT Michele Beauchamp includes a wonderful example on the cover of this GUIDE.
Zendala®
A Zendala combines the principles and techniques used to create a Zentangle-in-
spired (ZIA) piece of art with the principles of creating a mandala.
Often used in art therapy, mandalas are said to open the doorway into the symbolic
language of the soul and are a meditational art form.
For more about the origins of mandalas, see “Mandala – Sacred Geometry in Bud-
dhist Art“.
Zentangle Family
Meet the Zentangle Family, from the left: co-founder Maria Thomas, her daughters
Martha Huggins and Molly Hollibaugh, and Maria’s partner and co-founder Rick Rob-
erts. Missing from the photo is Zentangle HQ team member Julie Willand.
Zentangle HQ – also ZTHQ
In a former life I was a Public Relations Consultant for large corporations and “HQ”
was our common language for a company’s headquarters. So when I began Tan-
glePatterns in 2010 it was a natural to use HQ to refer to Zentangle’s headquarters,
home base of Zentangle’s founders.
Zentangle Logo
The story behind the Zentangle registered trademarked logo is explained here on
their blog.
“We chose the empty square drawn in brush strokes. The traditional square format
matched our original square tiles. We liked the idea of the empty square because it
suggested that it is up to the individual artist to define what to put on the tile.”
Zentangle Project Packs

Zentangle-Inspired Art (ZIA)
A Zentangle is the form created on a 3.5 inch (89 mm) tile, with abstract patterns
referred to as tangles.
Works using these patterns but differing in size or shape or surface are ‘Zentangle-
inspired Art’ (ZIA).
Zentanglish
My playful term for the quirky language used in the Zentangle art form.
This includes the Roman Numerals used for numbering the CZT seminars and terms
like Orbs and Perfs and Tango, for example. First used here.
Zenthology™
The anthology of official Zentangle patterns given to Certified Zentangle Teachers
(CZT®) at the completion of their certification program. It contains all the offi-
cial (aka Zentangle-original) tangles and the step-by-step illustrations for creating
them.
