Answers:

D. Discussing new The teacher discusses about the meaning of

concepts and polynomials and its types (degree, terms and
practicing new types of polynomials)
skills #1
Polynomial: is made up of two terms. Namely
“Poly” (meaning “many”) and nomial (meaning

“terms.”)

Types of polynomials:

Monomial: is an expression which contains only

one term.

Binomial: is a polynomial expression which

contains exactly two terms.

Trinomial: is an expression which is composed of

exactly three terms.

E. Discussing new The teacher discusses on how to get the addition

concepts and and subtraction of polynomials.
practicing new
skills #2 Adding polynomials:
(i) By arranging the like terms together
and then add.
(ii) By arranging expression in lines so that
the like terms with their signs are one
below the other i.e. like terms are in
same vertical column and then add the
different groups of like terms.
Like terms: are the terms that have an exact
same variable part

Example:

Add: 5x + 3y, 4x – 4y + z and -3x + 5y + 2z

Example:

Add: 3a^2 + ab – b^2, -a^2 + 2ab + 3b^2 and

3a^2 – 10ab + 4b^2

Example:
Add: 7a + 5b, 6a – 6b + 3c and -5a + 7b + 4c

Example:
Add: 3x^3 – 5x^2 + 8x + 10, 15x^3 – 6x -23,
9x^2 – 4x + 15 and -8x^3 + 2x^2 – 7x

1st method:
Subtracting polynomials:
(i) Enclose the part of the expression to be
subtracted in parentheses with negative
(-) sign prefixed
(ii) Remove the parentheses by changing
the sign of each term of the polynomial
expression which is the parentheses.
(iii) Arrange the like terms
(iv) Finally add the like terms to find the
required subtraction.

2nd method
(i) Re-write the given expression in two
lines such that the lower line is the
expression to be subtracted and like
terms of both the expression are one
below the other.
(ii) Change the sign of each term in the
lower line i.e. change the sign of each
term of the expression to be subtracted.
(iii) Combine the terms column-wise with
new signs assigned to the terms of

lower line.

Example:
Subtract: 2x – 5y + 3z from 5x + 9y- 22

Example:
Subtract: -6x^2 – 8y^3 + 15 z from x^2 – y^3 + z

Example:
Subtract: x- 4y – 2z from 7x – 3y + 6z

Example:
Subtract: 3a^3 + 5a^2 – 7a + 10 from 6a^3 –
8a^2 + a + 10

F. Developing Mastery (The teacher gives an individual performance to be

answer in a half sheet of paper crosswise)

Answer the following questions:

Direction: analyze and solve the following
problem. Show your solution.

1. A rectangular garden has one side with

length of 2a^2 + 7 and another with a
width of 6a^2 + 2a + 3. Find the perimeter
of the garden.

2. From the sum of 10a + 7b – 2c and 2a – 3b

+ 5c, subtract 3a + 2b + c
