BUS RESERVATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

Online bus reservation system is a project which provides a portal for bus ticket reservation. This
application allows users to book bus tickets from anywhere and anytime. The user can easily
book their tickets and cancel tickets. The user can view all the details of the website, bus, and
drive. The user can also view the details of the journey and the details of the journey timings.
Online Bus Ticket Reservation System is a Web based application that works within a centralized
network. This project presents a review on the software program "Online Bus Ticket Reservation
System" as should be used in a bus transportation system, a facility which is used to reserve seats,
cancellation of reservation and different types of route enquiries used on securing quick
reservations. OBTRS is built for managing and computerizing the traditional database, ticket
booking and tracking bus and travel made. It maintains all customer details, bus details,
reservation details. In order to achieve the design, Imo Transport Company (ITC) was chosen as
a case study because of its strategic importance to Imo State. Structured Systems Analysis and
Design Methodology (SSADM) was adopted. In addition, PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP)
language was used for the front-end of the software while the back end was designed using
MySQL. The software achieved is capable of improving the customer hand and relationship
management in ITC operations. It is recommended that despite the present functionality of the
designed software, an additional functionality such as the use of E-mail to send tickets and
notifications to the customer and an online payment using credit cards/debit cards should be
implemented into the system. Furthermore, other operations carried by ITC such as the courier
services should also be integrated in order to enhance the system.

PREFACE

The training offer has grown considerably in Cameroon over the past two decades. This
change has affected practically all fields, all sectors and all specialties. At the higher
education level, the government, by encouraging the creation of Private Higher
Education Institutes (IPES), has enabled students to benefit from vocational training in
the ten regions of Cameroon.

With the aim of ensuring its development and supplying its industry with supervisors and
qualified executives in different specialties, the State of Cameroon, by ministerial decree
N ° 90 / E / 58 / MINEDUC / DUET of December 24, 1971, created a cycle of Brevet de
Technicien Supérieur (BTS) and Higher National Diploma (HND). It is with this in mind
that many IPES have emerged. This is the case of ISTTI (now IUGET) which has chosen
to bet on quality by focusing on professionalism and ethics.

Indeed, the Higher Institute of Tertiary and Industrial Techniques in abbreviation ISTTI,
created by authorization N ° 08/0095 / MINESUP of May 05, 2008 and opened by
authorization N ° 14/0402 / MINESUP / SG / DDES of 04 July 2014, was raised to the
status of University Institute of Grandes Ecoles des Tropiques (IUGET) by decree N °
18/03976 / L / MINSUP / SG / DDES / ESUP / SDA / AOSB of 15 May 2018 with its
three schools (ISTTI, SOUTH POLYTECH and the School of Health Sciences (SHS)).

This university institute provides students with training cycles leading to the obtaining of
diplomas at ADVANCE LEVEL + 2, ADVANCE LEVEL + 3 and ADVANCE LEVEL
+ 5 levels in the Following specialties:

During their training, students benefit from an academic internship ranging from (01 to
06) months depending on the level of study. At the end of this immersion in business,
they must write an internship report or a dissertation thesis defended before a jury. This
internship requires an individual follow-up work in logic of detection and problem
solving allowing the student-intern to formulate proposals or concrete suggestions in the
face of a situation on the ground.

BUS RESERVATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study:

Online Bus Booking System cloud based online software. This system would help
customers to book a seat for their journey, book bus. This system would
alsohelptheownertomanagethecoaches,employees,clients,servicesetc. Bus Reservation
System will increase the booking process faster, convenient, and comfortable. Customers
can book their desired seats. They can check the availability of posts on a specific date.
The customer can check availability, book ticket, or cancel ticket 24X7. The online
system is available to use anytime. User doesn’t require to visit any office. They just need
internet and device to useoursystem.Theycancheckroute,price,classetc. They can pay fare
using a credit card, debit card, internet banking, online wallet like Paytm and cash too.
Managing buses, employees, and salary wouldbeverycomfortableusingthissystem. This is
a safe and secure way to expand the business. System decreases the
humaneffortsandincreasescustomersatisfaction. since the current reservation system is still
conducted manually and separately at each branch, contact must be made by each
branch’s frontofficer to thehead office foreach customer’s enquiry inorder to get the latest
update on schedule, seat availability and other reservation-related information; as well as
to avoid duplicate bookings or over-capacity. There is also a physical limit to the
reservation availability as each branch only operates during certain hours and reservations
can only be made on-the-spot. These limitations are not the only issues the company is
currently facing. Other factors that create problems include human errors (e.g.
miscalculations in ticket price, mistakes in noting passenger data, etc.), the fluctuation of
passengers during certain periods of time that causes a bottleneck in the check-in process
because of the inability of the frontofficer to multitask and the lack of over view or report
of the on-going business;making it difficult for
the company to judge past/current performance or plan future improvements. Looking at
these problems and limitations, it is clear that both the company and the customers require

an integrated reservation system that is more efficient in information update and

reservation handling and also easy to use. Electronic tickets, or e-tickets, give evidence
that their holders have permissionto enteraplace ofentertainment, usea
meansoftransportation,or have access to
some internet services.Bus Ticket Reservation System enables the customer to buy bus
ticket, make payment, and ask for information online easily. Furthermore, staff can sell bus
ticket using Bus Ticket Reservation System after check bus ticket availability for the
customer and print the bus ticket to the customer that queue up in the counter. The method
to solve this problem is to create an online buying bus ticket system. Customer can buy
the bus ticket over the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the bus ticket can't be
lost, stolen or left behind. In addition, the online system lets the customers check the
availability of the bus ticket before they buy bus ticket . Furthermore, customers no need
to pay cash to buy bus ticket because they can pay the bus ticket by using deposit slip
number order by bank.

1.1 Problem statement:

The objective of the project is to design and implement the software which helps the Bus
System employees to issue reservation tickets for various travelling and maintain the

BUS RESERVATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

1.6 Scope of the study:

The Airline reservation system creates a user-friendly interface between a customer and
administration to facilitate easy communication through software.
This project on Airline Reservation System is the automation of registration process of
airline system. The system is able to give much information like passenger’s information,
list of all passengers etc.
For data storage and retrieval, we use the file-handling facility of C language. It enables
us to add any number of records in our database. But for intrinsic nature of file handling,
the retrieval process is slow when we search a particular record in the database, because
record is searched sequentially.
1.7 Structure of the work:

1.8 Limitation of the study:

 Network connectivity
The speed and reliability of the network connection used to transmits data
betweenvarious components of the bus management system can affect its overall
performance . slow or unreliable network connections may lead to delays in data
synchronization , communication , and response times .
 Software efficiency
The efficiency of the software algorithms and codebase used in the bus
management system can impact it speed . poorly optimized algorithms or
inefficient coding practices may result in sluggish performance , especially when
processing large datasets or performing complex computation.
 Hardware limitation
The processing power and capabilities of the hardware infractructure supporting
the bus management system may impose constraints on its speed . older or
underpowered hardware may struggle to handle large volumes of data or complex
calculations , leading to slower performance .
 User interaction
The speed at which users interact with the bus management system , such as
inputting data , generating reports, or accessing information , can impact overall
system responsiveness . user actions that require processing or retrieval of large
amounts of data may introduce delays in system performance .

2.3 HISTORY OF FLIGHT RESERVATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

(FRMS)
American Airline was the first to establish an automated booking system in 1946. Using a
System to track information and improve efficiency was a highly appealing aim in the
industry, and drew the attention of other airlines worldwide. The system endured years of
development and alterations. Trans-Canada developed a computer-based system with
remote terminals that eventually took over operations in 1953. The same year, American
Airlines worked closely with IBM to develop an improved system, and the Flight
Reservation Management System (FRMS) and the Semi-Automatic Business Research
System SABRE) launched thereafter in 1960. The network completed set-up in 1964, and
it was recognized as the largest data processing system in existence. Later, other airlines
invested more in research and development to launch improved system, and through the
late 1960’s and early 1970’s, airlines established thier own systems. United Airlines
developed the Apollo Reservation System, and shortly after allowed travel agents access.
The Apollo system was the foundation for many further developments, which spread from
just US airlines to European airlines as well. The research and development of Flight
Reservation Management System became a signficant aspect of the industry and all its air
carrier compaines, and partnerships between airlines ad technology gurus emerged.

Other airlines soon establish thier own system. Delta Air Lines launched the Data
Authomated Travel Account System (DATAS) in 1968. United Airlines and Trans World
Airlines followed in 1971 with the Apollo Resevation System and Programmed Airline
Reservation System (PARS), respectively, Soon, travel agents began pushing for a system
that could automate their side of the process by accessing the various ARSes directly to
make reservations. Fearful this would place too much power in the hands of agents,
American Airlines executive Robert Crandall proposed creating an industry-wide
Computer Reservation System to be a central clearinghouse for U.S. travel ; other airlines
demurred, citing fear of antitrust prosecution,
