CPC WS Recycle

This document contains four problems involving the calculation of material recycling rates in industrial drying processes. Problem 1 involves calculating the amount of solid recycled and air circulation rate for a drier processing wet solids. Problem 2 involves calculating the fraction of air recycled in a countercurrent drier. Problem 3 requires calculating the ratio of recycled to fresh air entering an adiabatic drier processing a wet organic pigment. All problems require material and energy balance calculations to determine recycling and flow rates.

Worksheet-10
RECYCLE

2)

2) A wet solid containing 70% water is mixed with recycled dry solid to reduce the
water content to 50% before being admitted into the granulator. The solid leaving
the granulator is fed to a drier where it is brought into contact with dry air initially
containing 0.25% water by weight. In the drier, the air picks up moisture and
leaves with a moisture content of 5%. The solids leaving the drier contain 20%
water. A portion of this solid is recycled. For 1000 kg/h of wet solid sent to the
granulator as fresh feed, determine
A) The amount of solid recycled
B) The circulation rate of air in the drier on a dry basis

3) Astock containing 1.562 kg moisture per kg dry solid is dried to 0.099 kg

moisture per kg dry solid by counter current air flow. Fresh air entering contains
0.0152 kg water per kg dry air and the exit air has 0.0526 kg water per kg dry air.
What fraction of air is recycled if 52.5 kg of dry air flows per 1 kg of dry solid
inside the drier?
4) Awet organic pigment containing 45% CCl4 by weight is to be dried to 5% by
weight. The dryer is to operate adiabatically with fresh and recycle air entering the
dryer with 0.43 kg of CCl4 per kg of dry air. This air leaves the dryer at 0.95 kg of
CCl4 per kg of dry air. The capacity of the dryer is 200 kg bone dry solids per hour.
Calculate the ratio of recycle to fresh air.
