Definition of ergonomics
Ergonomics refers to the
optimization of physical hardware
to benefit the health of the user. It
is a science that is applied to
technology in everything from the
shape of a mouse to the order of
keys in a keyboard. It the scientific
discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and
other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles,
data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall
system performance. Ergonomics is not only for making the work better but also
making it comfortable and efficient.
Pg.1
Two reasons for using ergonomics to design a workstation
The ergonomics improvement process reduces ergonomic risk factors and improves the
interaction between the work and the worker. This process removes barriers to productivity
and makes job tasks easier and faster to accomplish. Improve productivity by reducing awkward
postures. Employees notice when the company is putting forth their best efforts to ensure their
health and safety. If an employee does not experience fatigue and discomfort during their
workday, it can reduce turnover, decrease absenteeism, improve morale and
increase employee involvement.

eyes react to images constantly
moving and changing, shifting
focus, sending rapidly varying
images to the brain. All these jobs
require a lot of effort from your
eye muscles. And to make things
worse, unlike a book or piece of
paper, the screen adds contrast,
flicker, and glare. What's more, it
is proven that we blink far less
frequently when using a
computer, which causes the eyes
to dry out and blur your vision
periodically while working.

Analyse a picture
In this picture the workers are not sitting on a chair to relax their back.
There work station is untidy, it’s not properly organized and the
workers are standing and this can cause back problems. The computer’s
screen is not at eye level and the monitor is not at arms length.
Pg. 4
Analyse a diagram and explain the correct way one should set up their
work station
Monitor- The monitor should be roughly an arm’s length away. The top of the screen should
be at eye level or just below so that you look down at a slight angle to your work.
Desk- Your desk area should be deep enough to accommodate your monitor at the
appropriate distance and to place the things you use most often directly in front of you. Make
sure everything you need is within reach so that you don’t have to stretch for things.
Keyboard- The keyboard should be aligned with the monitor and directly in front of you so
that you don’t have to twist or rotate to use it.
Put reference documents either between the monitor and the keyboard or directly alongside
the screen in a document holder. Putting such documents between the keyboard and the front
of the desk pushes the keyboard too far back on the desk, disrupting your posture. However,
the keyboard should not be so far towards you that your wrists rest on the sharp edge of the
desk.
Mouse - The mouse should fit the size of your hand so that it is comfortable to work with.
Make sure the mouse is alongside the keyboard and try to keep your wrist in a natural and
comfortable position when using the mouse.
