Ergonomics is the science of designing workplaces and equipment to fit workers, aiming to reduce fatigue and injury. Poor ergonomic practices can lead to health issues such as Musculo Skeletal Disorders, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury. Proper ergonomic practices and workplace safety tips include maintaining correct posture, taking breaks, and ensuring a safe environment free from hazards.

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the science of designing the job, equipment and workplace to fit the worker,
reducing fatigue, discomfort and injury.

Health Effects of Poor Ergonomics Practices

• Musculo Skeletal Disorder (MSD): This refers to injuries and disorders that affect the
human body movement. It affects the muscles, joints, tendons and nerves. One such
example, is when a person is sitting around a computer incorrectly (back pain, neck pain,
etc).

• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This is a painful condition that affects the hand and fingers,
due to excessive pressure on the wrist. This condition normally occurs due to long typing
hours without breaks.

• Trigger Finger/Thumb: This is when the finger becomes stuck in a bent position. A
person with trigger finger will also feel a snapping sensation in the finger.

• Repetitive strain injury (RSI) : a condition caused by overusing the hands to perform a
repetitive task, in this case typing and clicking the mouse.

Proper Ergonomic Practices

• Keep feet flat on floor.

• Knee angle need to be 90-degree.

• Sit upright with your back supported and your shoulders back.

• Your bottom should touch the chair properly.

• Take mini breaks.

• Sit in the correct distance from the monitor.

Some tips for keeping the work environment safe include:

• Use suitable furniture that is capable of bearing the weight of the equipment.
• Keep cables neatly arranged and out of walkways to avoid trip hazards.
• Do not overload electrical outlets to avoid fire hazards.
• Do not place items on the equipment – they may block the air vents.

Some tips for taking care of yourself in the workplace include:

• Ensure that your chair and desk are the correct height.
• Avoid extended use of the equipment – take regular breaks.
• Ensure that the lighting is adequate to avoid eye strain.
• Be careful when using laptops. The heat from some laptops can be enough to cause
superficial skin burns, even through clothing. A hot laptop may also reduce fertility in men.
