Final Thesis Chap3

This chapter outlines the research methodology used in the study, including the qualitative phenomenological research design. The study was conducted at Cotabato City National High School with 10 SHS students as participants to understand their lived experiences with parents working abroad. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify themes related to the students' experiences.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methodology of the study which

included the research design, locale of the study, population and

sampling techniques, research instrument, data gathering procedures

and data analysis.

Research Design

The researcher use qualitative research is used to understand

people’s beliefs, experiences, attitudes, behavior, and interactions. It

generates non-numerical data. The integration of qualitative research

into intervention studies is a research strategy that is gaining increased

attention across disciplines (Pathak, et al., 2013) using

phenomenological approach by Creswell (2013). A phenomenology is “a

strategy of inquiry in which the researcher identifies the essence of

human experiences about a phenomenon as described by participants”

(Creswell, 2009, p.9) In this approach, the researcher described the lived

experiences of individuals about a phenomenon as described by the SHS

students at Cotabato City National High School Main Campus with

parent working abroad during the school year 2022-2023.

Locale of the Study

This study will be conducted within the Cotabato City National

High School Main Campus with the lived experiences of SHS students

with parents working abroad. Cotabato City National High School-Main

Campus was formally established in 1924 with its former name,

Cotabato City High School. It was originally located at Cotabato Central

Pilot School, in the heart of the city. After World War II, it was

transferred at Sinsuat Avenue along the National Highway in an eight-

hectare land donated by the prominent Sero Family. It’s name was

changed to Cotabato Provincial High School after a while because it was

operated by the empire province of Cotabato. In 1976, under the

sponsorship of former Commissioner Simeon Datumanong and City

Mayor Johny Ty, it was placed under the management of the City of

Cotabato . Due to financial constraint, it was returned back under the

control of the national government on July 20, 1977. From Cotabato City

High School, it was later changed to Cotabato City National High School.

Population and Sampling Technique

The selection of the participants is through purposive sampling.

SHS students with parent working abroad were identified as participants

of the study. There were 10 participants: 5 TVL students and 5 Academic

students randomly chosen from Grade 11 and Grade 12. This study will

be conducted at CCNHS Main Campus during the school year 2022-

2023.

Research Instrument

The study will utilize a researcher-made semi-structured interview

guide questions to determine the lived experiences of SHS students with

parent working abroad, which will be check by the validator for

Alon & Santotome 22

validation. This interview guide written in english was composed of open-

ended questions except on personal information of the research

participants. This ascertained whether or not the items in the interview

guide was clearly understood and answered by the interviewees and

likewise ascertained that the data generated from the interview were the

needed data for the study.

Data Gathering Procedures

Prior to the actual conduct of the study, the researchers seek the

permission and approval of the college dean. Upon approval, a request

letter also will be sent to the school principal to ask permission to

conduct a study, as soon as the school principal permits the researchers

to conduct a study. We conducted an in-depth face-to-face semi-

structured interview to elicit information from the participants. To

ensure that everything was recorded, we used an audio recorder with the

permission of the participants. We ended the interview with the

participants after gathering all the needed data through the probing

questions that we asked them. After the gathered data from the interview

the researchers will give findings, conclusion and recommendation of the

study.

Analysis of Data

For the analysis and interpretation of the data, the researcher will

use thematic analysis. Thematic analysis is a method for analyzing

qualitative data that involves searching through a data set to identify,

Alon & Santotome 23

analyze, and report repeated patterns. It is a technique for portraying

information, yet it likewise includes translation in the cycles of choosing

codes and developing topics (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The data analysis

will be done after transcribing the data. Vernacular terms were

transcribed into English to fit the requirement of the readers. In vivo

coding (Saldaña, 2015) was adopted so that data were rooted on the

language of the participants. Data in sentence codes were connected to

categories, and the themes came out as analytical reflections of the codes

and categories (Saldaña, 2015). To come up with clear interpretation of

the data the researchers will utilized the thematic analysis to describe

and analyze the phenomenology of the lived experiences of students with

parents working abroad. At most, themes were formulated based on

gathered data. The discussion of results in thematic presentation was

guided by the research questions identified for the study.
