As the second project of 2nd

year studio, we were asked to
design a Firehouse for the his-
toric town of Bellefonte.
I chose to design a tribute to
industrial history, rather than
the luxury of the Victorian era.
The ornamented architecture of
the town is an inauthentic ve-
neer, disguising the history of
Bellefonte.
During my visit to Bellefonte’s
abandoned factories, I recogniz-
ed 3 features to design around.

and suspended bridges.

 BICYCLE BARN

To begin 2nd year studio,

students were asked to study and exercise
fundamental ideas related to space making.
Starting with an assigned painting, we were
required to intuitively
assign depth to the planes, lines, colors,
and geometries found in these fields. In re-
sponse, this building was the culmination
of my studies.

The building is a small bicycle/

coffee bar/studio apartment on Calder Way
in State College. The model is intuitively
made as planes married together in
section and plan. as additive construction
on an imagined
elevation, and as subtractions from the
bike shop’s volume - show the painting as
a spatial resource, defining three distinct
spaces in the two-story space of the pro-
posed bike shop.
