THE JOURNEY TO THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE

With serious planning and a sense of adventure, Smith and a small crew set off from St. John’s Newfoundland and

were in an ICE, the team was able to race through the danger with minimum stops all the way to Pond Inlet.

Dave made it to the meeting point, setting records along the way for many of the passages – something that would
continue throughout the journey. When Grylls and his team met Smith’s boat they were all astonished by the speed at
which they’d travelled – a sentiment that was echoed when Grylls boarded the ICE and took it out on the water.

 COMPLETING THE JOURNEY
The original plan for the trip was to drive the boat to Pond Inlet, then truck it back to Vancouver
Island. But once David Smith reached the summit, Bear Grylls encouraged him to keep going – all
the way around Alaska, through the Bering Sea and down the Pacific Coast of Canada. And he
took the challenge. Smith set off from Pond Inlet and travelled the entire way around, completing
a navigation from East to West coast of North America through the Arctic Circle – something he
attributes to the durability and capability of the SHOCKWAVE ICE.

MARINE SUSPENSION GOES BIG

The Northwest Passage journey was a true proof of concept. No one at the time had ever
considered doing what he did in a 33-foot RHIB – and he was wildly successful. Following the
journey, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Marine Suspension Seating was an important
next phase for marine safety. The SHOCKWAVE ICE and other SHOCKWAVE Marine Suspension
Seating are currently in use by the US Navy, Coast Guards and countless other organizations who
wanted to increase mission capability while providing better support and safety for their crews.

HISTORY
SHOCKWAVE is the culmination of over five decades of work.

Originally founded as Professional Components Ltd. by David Smith in 1965, our

company was created to develop, build and supply safety products for NASCAR racing
vehicles. We focused heavily on chassis suspension and driver safety, which eventually
led to the shock mitigation technology found in all of our products today.

In the years since founding, Professional Components has developed and built safety
equipment for a range of different uses, including ambulances, buses, submarines,
boats, and for various marine applications such as weather buoys. With each new
challenge, our capacity and understanding of marine safety environments has evolved,
taking us toward new and fascinating uses for our technology, with a spirit of ambition,
excitement and hard work.

Today, we still test like no one else. We have a fleet of boats dedicated to putting our
products to the test in some of the most challenging waters in the world - the North
Pacific. In-water testing is backed by laboratory testing in a controlled environment.
SHOCKWAVE was the first marine suspension seat builder to have its own drop testing
system and continues to lead in the field of certified performance. Our race bred
heritage continues today with the SHOCKWAVE Motorsports team. There is a direct
connection between suspension technology in racing and how we design our marine
suspension products. We continually challenge ourselves to learn from other industries
and racing is one of the best in terms of innovation.

SHOCKWAVE Seats feature the FOX Float H20, a
suspension shock developed in tandem with FOX Defense
and our company to meet specific marine and military
requirements. We are the only marine shock mitigation
seat company that works directly with FOX Defense.
SHOCKWAVE shocks are not off-the-shelf FOX shocks.

CORBIN - SEAT CUSHIONS

SHOCKWAVE seat cushions are manufactured in
the United States by world renowned motorcycle
seat manufacturer Corbin, who sculpts them to our
specifications for maximum durability and support. We
chose Corbin as our cushion manufacturer because
standard marine chairs just don’t make the grade. Shock
mitigation requires specific design requirements and our
products take an elevated level of abuse in extreme marine
environments – so it is important for us to work with a
company that is able to build cushions that are incredibly OUR HISTORY
durable and lightweight. Corbin gives us a premium
product of the highest quality. SHOCKWAVE offers
Corbin cushions in a non-shock mitigated form for those
applications where not all seats on a vessel need shock
mitigation, supplying high comfort and consistent style to
the entire vessel.

PERFORMANCE
We constantly test and measure our products and have built them to be industry leading.
All SHOCKWAVE products meet or exceed specifications and requirements for certification
in both Canada and the US. SHOCKWAVE products are capable of mitigating dynamic
exposure to levels below acceptable limits, as specified in ISO Standards 2631 Part 1
(1997) and Part 5 (2001); sections 14.4-14.4.9.3 of ASTM F1166-07. The suspension travel
prevents the seat from hitting the suspension stops during an acceleration event 10 times
the acceleration of gravity with an occupant up to the 95th percentile male in weight.

All SHOCKWAVE products are designed with corrosion prevention in mind, and we use
only the best, premium non-ferrous materials available today.

• All aluminum components are grade 5052 or 6061-T6

• Welded and formed components are powder coated to exceed salt spray ASTM
specification B-117 (equivalent to method 509.2 from MIL-STD-810G)

• Machined aluminum components are hard anodized to military specification

MIL-A-8625, and pass salt fog testing method 509.2 from MIL-STD-810G

• 304 and 316 stainless steel is used for all steel brackets and machined components;
304 and 316 stainless steels pass method 509.2 salt fog testing from MIL-STD-810G

Our system has been tested and proven in the most severe open water conditions
possible and can withstand most anything you can throw at it. However, to ensure
absolute safety and remove risk in the extremely unlikely event that a shock fails,
SHOCKWAVE Marine Suspension Seating provides three levels of bottoming
protection.

LEVEL ONE: PROGRESSIVE RATE AIR SPRING

The spring rate increases as stroke increases. It is impossible to fully compress the
air in the air spring at the end of the stroke. The spring rate ramps up to 3000lbs at
full compression.

LEVEL TWO: RUBBER BUMP STOP

Should there be the unlikely event of decompression the shock absorbers have a
rubber bump stop internally that will prevent the suspension from bottoming.

LEVEL THREE: BUILT-IN ABSORPTION CUSHION

The cushion material is an energy absorbing foam developed for NASCAR seats,
providing an extra level of protection. Along with the roll bar padding and rubber
bump stop, our systems cover you three-fold in the unlikely occurrence of a failure.

David Smith is the driver for SHOCKWAVE Motorsports. He started his professional
career in NASCAR nearly four decades ago building chassis. Smith’s return to the
racetrack has brought him full circle, developing some of the world’s best safety
products and re-energizing his passion for racing. Everything he does on the track
comes back to his marine suspension seating, helping SHOCKWAVE push speed and
safety limits on the water that were previously unattainable.
