LESSON 1: Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Verb Tenses

A verb is a word that tells of an action or state of being.

A. BASIC TENSES OF VERBS

1. Present Tense
 It expresses an unchanging, repeated, or reoccurring action or situation
that exists only now.
 This tense is formed by using am/is/are or the base form of the verb.
 -s or –es is added to the base form of the verb when the subject of the
sentence is singular but not when the subject is plural.
Examples:
a. The fruit smells fresh.
b. Every year, the school council elects new members.

2. Past tense
 It expresses an action or situation that was started and finished in the
past.
 This tense is formed by adding -d or -ed to the base form of the verb.
Was and were are the past tense of the verb be.
 The irregular verbs have special past tense forms.
Examples:
a. Mother cooked dinner.
b. Father bought a cake yesterday.

3. Future tense
 It expresses an action or situation that will occur in the future.
 This tense is formed by using shall/will with the base form of the
verb.
Examples:
Rosanna and her friends will go to the beach.
The president will finish his term on 2022.
B. PROGRESSIVE TENSE OF VERBS
1. Present Progressive Tense
 It describes an ongoing action that is happening at the same time the
statement is written.
 This tense is formed by using am/is/are with the verb form ending in -ing.
Examples:
a. The officers of the class are attending a leadership training session.
b. The lame girl is working happily right now.

2. Past Progressive Tense

 It describes a past action which was happening when another action
occurred.
 This tense is formed by using was/were with the verb form ending in
-ing.
Examples:
a. She was walking to school when my friend saw her.
b. We were going up the classroom when my classmate tripped.

3. Future Progressive Tense

 It describes an ongoing or continuous action that will take place in the
future.
 This tense is formed by using will be or shall be with the verb form
ending in -ing.
Examples:
a. Next month, we will be using different apps for our performance tasks.
b. The school president shall be seeing us again at the end of this term.

C. PERFECT TENSE OF VERBS

1. Present Perfect Tense
 It describes an action that happened at an indefinite time in the past or
that began in the past and continues in the present.
 This tense is formed by using has/have with the past participle of the
verb. Most past participles end in -ed. Irregular verbs have special
past participles that must be memorized.
Example:
He has expected worst things since the war began.

2. Past Perfect Tense

 It describes an action that took place in the past before another past
action.
 This tense is formed by using had with the past participle of the verb.
Example:
We had just finished the grammar lesson when the villagers came.

3. Future Perfect Tense

 It describes an action that will occur in the future before some other
action.
 This tense is formed by using will have/shall have with the past
participle of the verb.
Example:
The villagers will have protected the school from outsiders when
necessary.
