Proportion New

The document discusses proportions and their properties. It defines a proportion as an equation showing two ratios are equal, written as a:b = c:d where b and d are not equal to 0. It outlines six properties of proportions: 1) cross-multiplication, 2) alternation, 3) inverse, 4) denominator addition, 5) denominator subtraction, and 6) numerator-denominator sum. Examples are provided to illustrate proportional reasoning and using properties of proportions to solve problems.

PROPORTION
SIR JM MERCADO
PROPORTION
A proportion is an equation that
shows two ratios are equal

It can be written as a:b = c:d,

where b≠0, d≠0.
RATIO
The comparison of two entities/
numbers, things and etc.

Example:

girls : boys (read as girls is to boys)

MEANS

EXTREMES
EXAMPLE

So let us get the equivalent

fraction, we have
FUNDAMENTAL
LAW OF
PROPORTIONS
1. CROSS-MULTIPLICATION
PROPERTY / MEANS-EXTREME
PRODUCT LAW
The product of the extremes is
equal to the product of the means,
ad=bc
Example:
2. ALTERNATION PROPERTY /
SWITCH MEANS - SWITCH
EXTREMES LAW
Interchanging the means or
interchanging the extremes of one
proportion results another
proportion.
Example:
Example:
3. INVERSE PROPERTY / INVERT
BOTH SIDE LAW
If the terms of the ratio of a
proportion are inverted, the result
is also a proportion.
4. ADDITION PROPERTY /
DENOMINATOR-ADDITION LAW
Adding the corresponding
denominator to its numerator
results to another proportion.
5. SUBTRACTION PROPERTY /
DENOMINATOR-SUBTRACTION LAW
Subtracting the corresponding
denominator to its numerator
results to another proportion.
6. NUMERATOR-DENOMINATOR
SUM LAW
The ratio of the sum of the
numerators to the sum of the
denominators is equivalent to each
equal ratio.

In △CAR, RK = 3x + 1, KA = 3x - 1, CO = 5x - 1, and
OA = 4x + 1, find the value of x.
LETS REMEBER!
1. A ratio is a comparison of two numbers by division
2. Given two numbers 𝑎 and 𝑏, 𝑏 ≠ 0, a ratio is the quotient 𝑎
divided by 𝑏. this ratio can be written in three ways 𝑎 𝑡𝑜 𝑏, 𝑎: 𝑏,
or a/b.
3. A proportion is a statement of equality between two ratios.
In symbols a/b=c/d or 𝑎: 𝑏 = 𝑐: 𝑑, where 𝑏, 𝑑 ≠ 0
This proportion can be changed into these equivalent
forms
4. Basic Proportionality Theorem
- If a line parallel to one side of a triangle intersects the other
two sides in distinct points, then it divides the sides
proportionally.

𝐴𝐵 = 12,𝐴𝐷 = 4, 𝐸𝐶 =

find 𝐴E?
ASSIGNMENT
To estimate how high the
ring was. A 168-cm tall
basketball player stood so
that the end of his shadow
and that of the ring
coincided. He found that 𝐴𝑌
and 𝐴𝐵 measured180 cm and
326 cm, respectively. About
how high was the basketball
ring?
