Dear Professor, Szallai,
One example of a commercial that utilizes emotional appeal (pathos) is the "Lost Dog" advertisement by Budweiser. This commercial was part of the Budweiser's "Friends are Waiting" campaign, which aimed to discourage drunk driving. In the "Lost Dog" commercial, a young Golden Retriever puppy gets separated from its owner during a thunderstorm. The puppy embarks on a treacherous journey through rain and darkness, encountering various obstacles along the way. The commercial shows the puppy's owner frantically searching for him while the dog bravely faces dangers such as a wolf and a rushing river. Eventually, the puppy returns home safely, much to the relief and joy of its owner. The emotional appeal in this commercial is evident through the portrayal of the strong bond between the dog and its owner, as well as the fear and uncertainty experienced by both parties during the separation. The use of a cute and vulnerable puppy also enhances the emotional impact, evoking feelings of empathy and concern from viewers. The commercial effectively persuades listeners with emotion by tapping into the universal theme of love and loyalty between humans and animals. It appeals to viewers' emotions by highlighting the potential consequences of reckless behavior, such as drinking and driving, on the lives of loved ones. As for its effectiveness in persuading listeners, the "Lost Dog" commercial has been widely praised for its emotional resonance and powerful message. By evoking strong emotions, it successfully raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and encourages viewers to make responsible choices. Personally, as a listener, I find this commercial highly effective because it connects with me on an emotional level and reinforces the importance of prioritizing safety and the well-being of others.
