Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains method of research, population, sample size, and

sampling technique, description of respondents, research instrument, data

gathering procedure, and the statistical treatment of data used in the conduct

of this study.

Methods of research

An Experimental Research Method is used in gathering the data

needed in this study. This method enables researchers to conduct a

scientific approach using two sets of variables. The first set acts as a

constant, which you use to measure the differences of the second set.
Experimental Research Method test if a certain thing affects the

other or not. It can also identify if there is a correlation between two

variables. This method will allow the researchers to gather the needed

information of this study from the Grade 12 STEM students of Rizal High

School as their respondents.

This research aims to know the effect of educational mobile

applications on the selected Grade 12 STEM students of Rizal High

School.

Population, Sample size and sampling technique

The participants of this research are the Grade 12 STEM Students

in Rizal High School. A total of 70 students were selected randomly to

represent the population of 334 Grade 12 STEM students enrolled during

the S.Y. 2020-2021. The researchers used simple random sampling in

selecting the target sample of this study.

Description of the respondents

The study's respondents are Rizal High School's Grade 12 STEM

students. They are the ones who obviously know a lot about technology, so

the researchers will have an easy time establishing this research. They will
use the app and answer the questionnaire that the researchers created that

will provide the analyst with the items that they require once they have

finished using it. There are 7 sections in grade 12 STEM strand and the

researcher will need at least 10 students per section to serve as participants

in the study using a questionnaire and a survey.

Research Instrument

The research's instrument is a questionnaire. A questionnaire is a research

tool that consists of a sequence of questions (or other sorts of prompts)

designed to collect data from respondents in a survey or statistical study.

Although most questionnaires are constructed with statistical analysis in

mind, this is not always the case. Questionnaires are an incredibly handy

survey tool for assessing big populations quickly and easily. Despite popular

belief that surveys are simple to conduct, they require substantial

organization, time, and effort to provide relevant findings. The research

instrument consists of three parts. The components in Part I of the study

instrument collect respondents' details, such as their name, gender, age, and

section. The second part is the instructions where it explains the objective of

the research on how a mobile application "Science Quizlet" can enhance the

performance of Grade 12 students in science subjects. The third part is the

answer sheet which has numbers 1-5. The questions are effortless to answer

and can be answered within a minute.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use questionnaire as the research instrument in this

study. A questionnaire is a research tool that consists of a sequence of

questions (or other sorts of prompts) designed to collect data from

respondents in a survey or statistical study. This instrument will allow

the researchers to evaluate the respondents and their answer.

the evaluation will happen. The questions are effortless to answer and

can be answered within a minute.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step of the data gathering procedure is the researchers

will request authorization from the research adviser to conduct the study

on the full scale implementation of the study.

The second step is the pre-test. The researchers will distribute a

Google form for the pre-test. The pre-test will be a compilation of

questions from the quizlet app. After answering the pre-test, the

respondents can now proceed on using the application and start

answering the short quizzes.

After using the app, the respondents will answer the post-test

prepared by the researchers and the researchers will give the

questionnaire to the respondents. Lastly, the researchers will collect all

the questionnaires. The collection of the questionnaire will be done by

the leader of the researcher to ensure that there will be no information

tampered.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers conducted statistical tools to answer the problem

of the study in order to gain a better knowledge. The formula is

illustrated and described in detail below.

A. Z-Test

This was utilized to identify the significant difference between the

scores of the respondents before and after using the mobile

application in order to see if it is useful for studying in this new

normal. The formula used is:

Where:

Z – Z-Test

- Sample average

S – is the standard deviation

B. Mean

This was utilized to identify the mean or average of the scores of the

respondents to identify if the application improve or downgrade the

scores of the respondents. The Formula used is:

Where:

m – is the mean

s – sum of terms

n – number of terms

C. Standard Deviation

This was utilized to determine the amount of variation or dispersion in

the data. The formula is:

∑ )

Where:

N – The size of the population

xi – each value from the population
