Ultrasonic Installation Method – The most common method for installing brass inserts in plastic. Ultrasonic installation provides fast, positive anchoring. An insert is placed
in a molded or drilled hole. An ultrasonic horn contacts the insert and delivers ultrasonic vibrations, which travel through the insert. Frictional heat is immediately developed
and causes the plastic to mold itself to the knurls, permanently locking the insert in place.
Heat Staking Installation Method – Inserts may be preheated then pressed into the plastic part or piloted into a cored or drilled hole
in the plastic part and then heated by conduction. Heated inserts provide a stress free assembly.

technical guide
Design Parameters
When designing an application that will require a threaded attachment point in plastic material, the following design
guidelines can be used as resources in choosing the proper insert for the specifications you require. It is still important that
proper testing be performed to validate the fastened joint but these suggestions can get you started in the right direction.
When designing an application the following information will be important in choosing the proper insert:
Insert Installation
Inserts are installed using the following methods:
Heat: Insert is heated prior to installation in to the plastic boss or during the installation process by a heat insert staking machine.
This installation method is suitable for larger sized inserts and provides excellent flow of plastic into the insert surface
profile. Installation method is designed for use with thermoplastics and NOT for thermoset plastics. This method is good for
medium and high volume production runs. Perfect for applications requiring multipoint and multilevel installation of inserts.
An advantages of this installation method include different size inserts can be installed with no limitations and it eliminates
concern of noise levels, tool wear, and complex fixtures. Heat typically yields a 10-15% higher “torque out” and “pull out”
values than any other method.
Ultrasonic: Insert is placed in plastic boss and an ultrasonic horn is positioned on top of the insert. Vibrations from the horn generate
heat at the interface of the insert and the plastic; causing the plastic to flow into the surface profile of the insert.
The method is designed for use with thermoplastics and NOT for thermoset plastics. This method is perfect for applications
that require single plain installation. Given the inherent nature of the installation process, consideration must be given to
noise levels and appropriate part fixture prior to installation. Ultrasonic installation can induce high hoop stress on the boss
and potentially cause cracking or splitting; which is not always apparent at the time of installation.
Mold in: Mold in method of installation involves placing the insert in the mold die during the plastic molding process. This method
can reduce final installed costs as it replaces secondary placement of the insert. However, mold cycle time will increase.
Mold in method may not be possible for some applications.
Press In: This method involves using a press to push the insert into the boss hole. This method is reserved for the B1P and
B2P styles. Installation is quick and easy and the pressure of the insert expansion into the plastic also adds a
prevailing torque feature to the insert which is helpful in applications involving vibration. Applications involving materials
with high flexural modulus must be tested to ensure plastic does not crack during installation or in cyclic testing.
Thread in: This method is reserved for the B1T and B2T insert styles. A tool will thread the inserts in to the boss hole and the slots on
the body will cut a thread in to the plastic. This method is good for thermosets and other rigid plastics. An adhesive can
be added to the outside thread to bond the insert in to the plastic further improving insert retention within the base material.

Elements of Boss Design
1) Holes should always be deeper than the total length of the insert. For thread
cutting inserts the hole depth should be at least 1.2 times the length of the insert.
4) When molding the hole the draft angle of the core pin is important to insert performance.
It is recommended to use a draft angle of 1 degree to ensure proper insert engagement.
Larger draft angles will reduce the engagement of the insert and plastic and could cause
cracking if the hole diameter inside the hole falls below the recommended hole size.
If using the B4U series, use an 8 degree draft angle as this style is designed for angled holes.
All core pins should be designed to account for plastic shrinkage after the molding process.
Use only tapered inserts with tapered holes.
5) For Thread-In Series product, hole size will be determined by the type of thermoset or thermoplastic material. Consult the product
dimension chart and Sherex for recommended hole sizes. For hand-installation, a pilot at the top of the hole will aid in centering the insert.
With a fixtured/automated installation, a lead-in chamfer will be sufficient.
2) Flange of the insert can act as ground for applications requiring this feature.
