Oklahoma has produced tr¡¡o of the greatest American lazz Guilarisls, Charlíe
Christian, who played in theBennyGoodman Band in 1939-4 l and BarneyKessel.
Kessel was born and raised in Muskogee Okiahoma, and as a 12 year old newspaper
boy he bought his first guitar for Sl.OO ín the 1930's. His teacher made a point of
lelling his mother he did not think Barney would make a good guitar player.
Then at 14 whife listening to Charlie Christian and other Big Band greats he decided
lhercwere only two destinations for a boy with such serious musical ambitions, either
New York or Los Angeles. Deciding on Hollywood he went lhere in 1942 and played
in a movie studio orchestra adding different media as he progressed, clubs, concerts,
commercial recordings and also as a featured perfotmer. He then went through an
unbelievably productive period of development in music, includíng 1O months with
the Oscar Peterson Trio, touring wilhlhelazz at the Philharmonic Ail Stars, recording
"Cry me a River" withJulie London,-making over 5OO albums with other musicians
and over 50 albums under his own name.
Barney decided to break away into the InternationalJazz circuít in 1968 settling in
Britaín for more than a year.Lalerhe devefoped and conducted seminars all over the
wodd. The result of these íntense discíplines is that Kessel has become one of the most
celebrated winnerc of Jazz polls ever and many believe the besl jazz guilarist the music
world has produced. Though Barney contínues to play with a vast array of lop Jazz

l1
Stars he has also developed his teaching skills as intensively as he has mastered his
guitar, providing his learning audiencewith an analysis of his techniques.
"Hís steady development over the years now places him at the pinnacle of modern
guitar artistry. He brings to a standard ballad more harmonic subtleties than the
composers themselves envísioned." saíd Leonard Feather, Jazz crilic for the Los
Angeles Times. r
Adding "Kessel is not oniy as lyrical a guitarist as we have lnlazz today, but he can
outswing any man in the house." ' . t.
After years of absorbing an extremely ví§orous program of world lravel, playing jazz
guitar with the best, and developing unique guítar improvisation teaching methods,
Barney has now enlered a new phase in his career by communicating his art through
the media of video.
