1. INTRODUCTION
This guideline contains the information and steps to do a coached observation.
2. SCOPE
This guideline applies to all QCHEM, QCII, RLOC employees and base load
contractors, and whoever is involved in observation process as observer or observee.
3. GENERAL GUIDELINES:
3.1 Coached observation can be done with any current / previous QIT (QSAFE
Improvement Team) members OR trained coached observers. (Observation
done with current QIT members will only be considered for observer of the
month eligibility.)
3.2 Coached observer and employee should do independent observations.
3.3 After end of the observation both should share their comments with each other.
3.4 Feedback should be carried out by both observers jointly.
3.5 Both should feed observation data sheet separately in to the system, based on
behaviours observed by individual only.
3.6 Coach should coach a maximum of 3 QSAFE observers during any single
observation.
3.7 Maximum 4 people should do observation on a single activity or task including
coach.
3.8 Coached observation can be done with lead worker / worker of the same group
involved in the task.

4. COACHING GUIDELINES:
During Coached observation Coach / QIT member should try to enhance the
observation skills of employee by:
• Reinforcing fundamentals of observation process such as:

 No Name  No Sneaking up
 No Blame  Safe & At-Risk
• Going through each critical behaviour in the ICB data sheet.

• Improving observation skills by looking into even the smallest aspect of behaviours
• Better identifying Safe & At-Risk behaviour
• Improving the feedback skill after observation:
 Appreciating safe behaviour first and then discuss at-risk behaviour
• Uncover real barrier by digging into more WHY for at-risk behaviours
• Help observee to find out the most feasible solution of the problem
• Identifying the right follow up action items, if required.
• Instil confidence of observee in the process
• Marketing the QSAFE process
• Help employees to write quality comments into the system
• Solve the queries of observer and observee, if any.
