Unit I
Introduction to basics of industrial automation : Introduction to industrial automation, advances
in industrial automation, architecture of industrial automation systems, benefits and application of
industrial automation, introduction to various measurement systems
Unit II
Programmable logic control systems : industrial discrete/analog Input and output sensing
devices, evolution of PLC, need of PLC, architecture of PLC, advantages and applications of PLC, the
software environment and basic programming of PLC (I/O instructions), structure and designing of a
PLC Program
Unit III
Advanced programming languages : Typical operands of PLC Programs, timer, counter,
addressing of the PLC, IEC 1131, other programming languages, applications of PLC
Unit IV
Sensors and Actuators : introduction to pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, Measurement of
temperature sensor, pressure and force measurement, measurement of displacement and speed, flow
measurement, measurement of level and pH, Introduction to process control, Introduction to AC and
DC drives, Introduction to computer numerical control (CNC)

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) : SCADA Fundamentals: Introduction, Open
system: Need and advantages, Building blocks of SCADA systems, Remote terminal unit (RTU):
Evolution of RTUs, Components of RTU, Communication subsystem, Logic subsystem, Termination
subsystem, Testing and human-machine interface (HMI) subsystem, Power supplies, Advanced RTU
functionalities, Intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), Data concentrators and merging units, SCADA
communication systems, Master Station: Master station software components
Unit VI
HMI SYSTEMS : Necessity and Role of HMI in Industrial Automation, Types of HMI panels, Text
display, operator panels, Touch panels, Panel PCs, Integrated displays, interfacing PLC to HMI
