A These are the three most common ways of writing the date in English.

 Cardinal number + month: 3 May; 15 August


 Ordinal number + month: 3rd May; 15th August
 Month + cardinal number: May 3; August 15

Ordinal numbers, e.g. 15th, are becoming less usual. Americans normally put the
month first, e.g. August 15.

In speech (discurso/oralmente) ordinal numbers are usual.

 ‘the third of May’


 ‘the fifteenth of August’
 ‘May the third’
 ‘August the fifteenth’

ORDINAL NUMBERS

When you express ordinal numbers in writing, you use the cardinal number followed
by the last two letters of the word for the ordinal number.

Examples:

1st (first) 5th - fifth 9th - ninth 13th - thirteenth

2nd (second) 6th - sixth 10th - tenth 14th - fourteenth

3rd (third) 7th - seventh 11th - eleventh 15th - fifteenth

4th (fourth) 8th - eighth 12th - twelfth 16th - sixteenth

17th - seventeenth 20th (twentieth) 62nd sixty-second 1000th thousandth

18th - eighteenth 23rd (twenty-third) 81st eighty-first Two thousandth

19th – nineteenth 40th fortieth 100th hundredth One millionth
