COURSE SYLLABUS
CONTENTS
 Syntactic constituency.
 Grammatical categories.
 Grammatical relations.
 Phrase structure.
 Clause structure.
 Word formation.
 Inflection.

OBJECTIVES
This course is an introduction to the foundations of the grammar of the English language. Its main aims
are: a) to give a broad overview of the main syntactic and morphological phenomena of English through the
empirical analysis of language; and b) to introduce the analytical tools and procedures for the empirical
study of language.

PROCEDURES
We will meet once a week, usually on Wednesdays at 4pm. If there is any impediment, we will arrange to
meet on Monday at 4pm. Classes will be taught in English and recorded on Microsoft Teams. Assessments
will take place online, either through Microsoft Teams or through email. Class recordings will be available
for 21 days after the date of recording.

The course will be divided into 10 topics and we will discuss the following texts for each topic:

syntactic overview A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar – chapter 1 + chapter 2
reflexive pronouns Syntactic Theory – chapter 1
inflection Word-formation in English – chapter 1; A Student’s Introduction to
English Grammar – section 3.1
word formation Word-formation in English – chapter 2
verbs A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar – sections 3.2; 4.1 to 4.3
complements vs. modifiers A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar – sections 4.3 to 4.6
noun phrases A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar – chapter 5
adjectival phrases A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar – chapter 6

ASSESSMENT
Each task assigned will be worth 10 points. The final grade will be the sum of the tasks divided by the
number of tasks assigned.
There will be clear and reasonable deadlines for each task. Deadlines will not be extended, so please plan
to hand in tasks within the period of time provided.
