Is Odysseus a hero?
By Jay Kofi Twum
Perks
I believe a hero is something or someone
who has courage and is brave, someone that is intelligent and wise, someone who is loyal to others and in the mythological Greek world divine birth or help and support from the gods.
I believe Odysseus has courage because
when he was in Polyphemus’ cave he was able to lead his men, give the giant, which is twice his size, a pot of strong wine without trembling and falling with fear.He also had the nerve to blind Polyphemus with a heated wooden stake.
Odysseus is wise because he said nobody
when Polyphemus asked him for his name so when Polyphemus called out to his brothers to help him his brothers were confused “Nobody has hurt me!”.On the contrary, he wasn’t very intelligent when he was boasting about who had outsmarted him which costed him 10 more years at sea but that may have been something most Greek heroes would do in those times spreading their name to be known all around the world for doing one deed which normally wouldn’t be done by the average person. In addition, it wasn’t fair to his crew mates that sometimes he would put them at risk because he wanted something for himself like the sirens (heads of humans and bodies of birds) when he wanted to listen to their songs he must have screamed at them to untie him.
I think Odysseus is loyal because he was the
king of Ithaca and loyal to his wife and household but he did stay with Circe and Calypso for a few years as they held him hostage on their islands and in which he did commit adultery. To my conclusion he can be hubris which greatly impacts his communication skills so I believe he is a hero but can improve.
