Counselling skills for law professionals is a must and necessary skill. It is important for a lawyer
to gather crucial and pertinent data from the client to serve the client better. G. Goodpaster
rightly states that ‘the major part of lawyers’ work takes place in the lawyers’ office using the
skills of interviewing and counseling, negotiation and drafting’. It is about diagnosing a situation
and obtaining relevant information from a client is one of the greatest skills a lawyer should
possess. Thus, this workshop is designed such that the students are expected to practice these
skills and emerge as good counsellors. These skills not only help the professionals to excel in
their profession but also help them become better human beings with qualities of empathy,
listening skills, and problem solving.
OBJECTIVES
Objective of this workshop is to help students understand and practice the technicalities of
counseling skills and appreciate the utility of these techniques in legal profession.

COURSE OUTCOMES
COURSE CONTENT
This workshop would have some theoretical sessions to familiarize the students with key
concepts of counselling skills so that they are ready to use these skills. There would also be
webinars/technical sessions organised with legal professionals.
The major concepts to be discussed in workshop (with practical exercises) are as follows:

Evaluation Scheme
This workshop is a highly engaging course and the students are expected to go beyond the
minimum required hours in the program i.e. 24 hours.
Attendance
Students are required to have minimum attendance of 75% which will be calculated on the basis of your
engagement on blackboard and practical exercises. Students with less than said percentage shall NOT be
eligible to qualify the examination and may have to again undergo this course as per academic calendar
E-Mail, &Blackboard: Each student in the class should have an e-mail id and a password to access
the blackboard regularly. Regularly, important information – Date of conducting class tests, guest
lectures, syndicate sessions etc. to the class will be transmitted via blackboard announcements. The
best way to arrange meetings with faculty coordinator or ask specific questions is by email. All the
assignments should be uploaded on blackboard. Various research papers/reference material will be
mailed/uploaded on blackboard time to time.
Activity Marks
Active Participation – Based on your engagement on Blackboard and/or in 20
face to face sessions in workshop
Quiz based upon the online/offline sessions conducted on the major 20
concepts
Final assessment which would involve you engaging into a counselling 60
exercise with a client (online or offline as decided by the coordinator).
Assessment shall focus on:
o Clarity, smoothness and professionalism of language
o Appropriate use of the micro-skills in the interview process
o Sense of direction and goal
o Appropriate expression of empathy, positivity, warmth and
absence of bias, judgment and leading questions
TOTAL 100
Scoring less than 35 absolute marks shall be awarded as ‘F’. Students scoring 85 marks and above as
composite score shall be awarded as the highest grade as ‘O’ i.e., Outstanding (on 10 point Scale)
