What is this module about?
By knowing the arts and culture of their ancestors, Filipinos, in turn, learn more about
themselves and each other. Some artists are recognized for being vessels of cultural knowledge. They are
credited for keeping alive the rich cultural traditions of the Philippines.

It is unfortunate to say that many Philippine tradition arts and crafts are disappearing. Even in
this fast-paced world, knowing and preserving Filipino heritage is crucial. By knowing the arts and culture
of their ancestors, Filipinos in turn learn more about themselves and each other. They are credited for
keeping alive the rich cultural traditions.
CONCEPT NOTES:
⮚ Tasked with administration and implantation of the award is the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
⮚ The main objective of the award is to honor and support traditional folk artists and see to it that
their skills and crafts are preserved.

- Awards and Incentives
⮚ The awardee receives a specially designed medallion or plaque.
⮚ The awardee is given an initial grant of Php 100,000 and a Php 14,000 lifetime stipend per
month.
⮚ The Awardee is granted a maximum cumulative amount of P 750,000 medical and
hospitalization benefits as well as funeral assistance similar to those received by the National
Artists.

EXERCISE
Direction: From the list of the Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan awardees mentioned above, choose one
(1) that you would like to conduct individual research on. Provide a detailed report on his/her life, an
analysis of his/her style or technique, contributions to his/her chosen field, images, sound bites, or
samples of his/her work. Write your answer on a short bond paper.
● The Outstanding Young Men or TOYM is given to men and women between ages of 18–40 who have
shown selfless dedication to their profession, resulting in outstanding contributions to their individual
fields and the well-being of their fellows.
● The TOYM Awards was started by the Manila Chapter of the Jaycees on April 6, 1959. The Jaycees
stand for the Junior Chamber International, which is a multinational civic organization.
● A foundation was put up in 1990 with the help of the Jaycee National Officers and the former TOYM
Awardees to support the annual search.

● In 1996, the award was changed to TOYF of The Outstanding Young Filipinos to given equal
opportunity for the women have been recipients of the awards since 1984 in 1999, and the name was
changed back to TOYM to respect the origin name of award and to emphasize that “men” in the name
of the award refers to both genders. (*Refer to pages 131-133 for the awardees)
⮚ Filipino Citizenship
● The Gawad CCP Para sa Sining is the highest award the Cultural Center of the Philippines can
give to artists or groups of artists whose body of work has constantly shown high quality and
contributed to development of their chosen art form.
● Award recognizes artists of the following art forms: Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theater, Film,
Literature, Broadcast Arts, Technical Theater, and Production Design, and it has Four Categories.
● Category A is given to artists or groups of a artists that have continuously produced high quality
work.
● Category B is for artists or groups of artists that have made great contributions to the development
of their art and craft in their religion, whether of birth or residence.
● Category C recognizes people and cultural workers who have contributed to the cultural

development of art in the country through research, curatorship, and administration.
● Category D acknowledges artist or groups of artists that have significantly developed and
promoted arts and culture as well as support local cultural activities.
● Also given during the awarding ceremony is the Tanging Parangal ng CCP, which is given to a
person or a group for their contribution and efforts that have made important and positive change
to Philippine Art. (*Refer to pages 141-143 for the awardees.)
