KEGITES CLUB INTERNATIONAL: HISTORY OF SUPREMOST COMRADIUM

Historically, the conception of the idea to start the now Kegites‟ Club
International (initially known as "Palmwine Drinkers klub") started at a
palmwine drinking shop/„joint‟ at the then University College (now
University of Ibadan (UNIBADAN)). However, the particular spot where the
shop was constructed is located in the region given out by the University
first as the temporary site for the University of Ife (UNIFE now Obafemi
Awolowo University (OAU)), Ile Ife and later, to establish the
Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Typical of any African man that likes to drink for pleasure and at
leisure time, there is always the natural flow (like River Nile) of songs
(usually native or traditional) after a few sips of Palmwine commonly
called Holy Water by members of the club. The songs in most cases, is
usually backed up with matching beats that can either be provided by the
singer himself or by any other person sitting right beside the singer and
enjoining it. Beats of this nature are commonly made from just anything
around. Men usually use their hands (palm) on materials such as Gourd
(Akèrèngbè) in which the wine is dispensed for customers to drink; the
wooden bench or log on which the drinkers sit; a piece of rock on any
type of metal or any other two objects that can be struck together to
produce sound. When they (the drinkers) realized that they all share the
same thing (time of pleasure) together, they unanimously resolved to
making it a routine to meet at specific times in the same place and a
group named The Palmwine Drunkard Klub was formed with motto: Palmwine,
the Basis of African Unity and World Tradition.
The supposed goals then were:
i. to upholding African cultural heritage;
ii. to share palmwine (making sure that whoever that could not afford
to buy get at least, some to drink)
iii. compete (real fun) between each other on who can resist
intoxication from drinking most;
iv. to help in getting one another home when drunk;
v. to relieve their minds of the stressful time that they have had at
school studying and attending classes (they were all students) and the
most important of all is:
vi. to help one another especially, academically. The members of the
club talk in slang and in codes communicating with one another and signal
membership recognition to themselves by raising up the index finger.
Owing to the fact that the early morning members of the club were
students of the UNIFE, when the students moved to the permanent site in
Ile Ife, the members named the school (UNIFE), the World Headquarters of
the club. The question then was: If UNIFE is the World Headquarters, what
about UNIBADAN, on whose land the first meeting center/joint was built?
The name National Headquarters was given to the UNIBADAN. Since the first
palmwine selling shop (or better still, meeting place) commonly called
the Uppermost Shrine by the members of the club, was located at the
portion now occupied by the Polytechnic of Ibadan (Poly Ibadan), Poly
Ibadan has since then being referred to as the Mother Shrine (The shrine
that gave birth to other shrines). The then members of the club included
the Eternal Life Patrons (ELPs) Late Obafemi Awolowo and Late Tai Solarin
both of blessed memories.
The then Palmwine Drunkards Club formed around 1962 has since then
undergone various kinds of transition. In 1968 for instance, the first
woman member (Òpékès (men are Òpákàs) by the members of the club) joined
the club. A modification was made to the name of the club around this
time because members feel being mocked by their non-members (commonly
referred to as Komrados)‟ populace and the name of the club was then,
used to be written as The Palmwine Drinkers Klub in lieu of the original
Palmwine Drunkards Klub. In 1972, the name of the club was changed to
„The Kegites Klub‟ confraternity was adopted with motto: For social and
Culture until 1986 during the reign of Chief Anthony Uzodima Ogidi, the
then AB (incumbent) Chief of the club at the World Headquarters, in Ilé -
Ifè, when the name was again changed to the Kegites‟ Club of Nigeria with
University of Ife still as the World Headquarters (till date) and the
University of Ibadan, adopted as the National Headquarters. The motto of
the club as adopted in 1986 is 'Unity in diversity' with Discipline as
the watchword.

The Kegites‟ aims and objectives as of then and till now are that of
African Origin.

Of all clubs and associations in the Tertiary institutions in Nigeria,


Kegites‟ club is the one that the members are most faithful and most
highly disciplined. Owing to the fact that no man on earth can walk
without shaking the head members of the club do make one kind of mistake
or the other from one time to the other. Minor offences could cause the
members to be suspended for specific period of time and major ones, De-
Kegation (Dis-membership). Once a person is de-kegged, he/she cannot be
re-kegged.
The name Kegites‟ club was coined out from the fact that palmwine is kept
in KEGS and the motto as Unity in Diversity. The new motto of the club
was adopted because there have been several Ilyasis all over the nation.
The symbol of unity being the palm tree with numerous fronds branching
from it but still remains in unison. The Club existed together as one
'supremost comradium' with branches in almost all institutions of higher
learning in Nigeria
The Federal College of Agriculture, Akure was the first chapter (Ilya) to
be formed (received Keg of Office) and since then, there have been over
one hundred (100) Ilyasis in Nigeria and two overseas Ilyasis in
Stratford, UK (Ilya du Queen) and Chandigerh, India (Ilya du Indi). The
club is reputed in higher institutions all over Nigeria for her large
numerical membership values and for being the club with the greatest
number of admirers

PHILOSOPHY OF THE SUPREMOST COMRADIUM


Motto: Palmwine, the Basis of African Unity and World Tradition.
MISSION:
The supposed goals then were:
i. to upholding African cultural heritage;
ii. to share palmwine (making sure that whoever that could not afford
to buy get at least, some to drink)
iii. compete (real fun) between each other on who can resist
intoxication from drinking most;
iv. to help getting one another home when drunk;
v. to relieve their minds of the stressful time that they have had at
school studying and attending classes (they were all students) and the
most important of all is:
vi. to help one another especially, academically.
The members of the club talk in slang and in codes communicating with one

index finger (known as the "One Finger Salute")

MODE OF DRESSING
Dressing of the Kegites‟ Club is made up of the regalia (specially made
apron) and the capito (hat/cap). Komrads must be properly dressed at
gyrations, meetings or any other formal comradic gathering. A chief does
not put on a regalia but Agbádá.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION


The club has a unique and fascinating way of communicating with the
populace (students and non-students alike) and this can only be decoded
by members or sometimes by close associates of the members of the club.
For instance, the word „therefore‟ can be written as „dia(3+1)‟ and
„rotate‟, written as „rot8‟. Certain words are peculiarly pluralized when
Kegites write. For example there is nothing like „chiefs‟ in comradium
but chiefisis or chiefi6; opekes as opekesis or opeke6. The one-finger
salute is the most precious feature of the Kegites‟ club and it can only
be exchanged between members of the club.

The following vibrations and responses are usually used before and during
prayer (Prayermus) and blessings (Blessmatua) this period is regarded as
a sacred moment, members are expected to refrain from anything that can
distract their attention comradically, it is called "A moment of
Solemnity".
Prayermus can be said by any living soul (kongo) while blessmatua can
only be said by a Chief, everybody at the arena must remain upstanding.

OFFICERS OF THE CLUB AND THEIR FUNCTIONS (GRAND COUNCILLORS LORD)


The officers of Kegites club are also known as G. Lords or Grand
Councilors, headed by the incumbent Chief (A. B.). This crop of very
karid comrads or fellows (If it is a convergence) are usually selected.
In the case of a chief, the process known as "Elder sitting". It is done
by the former eldersis council headed by the XY elder of the Ilya. The
elected Chief can re-shuffle his cabinet as many times as possible. The
Chief and the Elder must be selected from the penultimate level of their
course of study.

The chief is the only person authorized to wear agbada, use staff of
office and bead at his hand and neck.

• CHIEF OR LIFE WIRE (THE PRESIDENT): Like in the natives of Yorùbá


(one of the major tribes in Nigeria) tradition, in which; the Oba (King)
is the head. Whatever the king says hold. Nobody questions or queries
whatever the king has said translating to the Yoruba name for the King,
Kábíyèsí (no one questions him). The Kegites club is also monarchically
set up with the Chief (President) as the head. The chief could have as
well been referred to as an Oba but due to the fact that there cannot be
two traditional rulers in a city. The first Kegites‟ chief to be
coronated was Chief (now a Professor) Olusegun Adeshina. He is the
autocratic head of the Ilya, his coronation signifies the start or
beginning of a new keg-year of an Ilya, he presides over all meetations
of the G-lords and other meetation, he declares open and closes all
minitappings and gyrations be it obeng or any other functions, he
initiates, fellowrises, elevates, patronizes and coronates at will, he
has the power to suspend any erring member of the club and, lift such
suspension whenever he feels such a person has shown enough remorse, he
can dekeg any living soul, but the power to rekeg lies with the AB World
Chief, who can rekeg such a person through a world pardon. He blesses
people, places and things, he represents and acts on behalf of the club
both within and without, he says prayermus. He is also the only person
that can blessmatus. He is bestowed with a lot of vast power
comradically. Other Port-folios (selective posts: there is no election
but selection in Kegites club) in the club include:
•KORD: He is an autocratic and inducted president of a baby Ilya or a
fellowsis tent or convergence. He performs all functions of a Chief
except that he cannot dekeg, but can only make a recommendation to the
Chief, he cannot lift his hand during chiefisis "awares" he prepares' his
baby Ilya for test of kariability (T.O.K.) towards obtaining a keg of
office, he performs other functions assigned from his mother Ilya, he
cannot dress like a chief i.e wearing of a flowing robe (Agbada), beads
and holding of a staff of office (Horsetail).

•ELDER (VICE PRESIDENT): The elder is next in rank to the chief. The
elder is the chairman of the elder‟s sitting (a one-time in a regime
meeting at which a new chief will be selected). The elder does everything
that chief can do in the absence of the chief but he must not hold the
Staff of Office (The Horsetail that the chief uses to command). The elder
also acts as the adviser to the chief.

•FEDA OR FEATHER (THE SECRETARY GENERAL): In the olden days, before the
advent of pen and pencils, our forefathers use feather to write so, the
name coined for this port-folio. The feda takes care of all of the clubs
documentation. Takes minutes of meeting and write letters on behalf of
the club.

•PARROT (P.R.O): He is the P.R.O. (Public Relations Officer) of the


Ilya. He is the 4th in rank in the cabinet of the Ilya. He can be
delegated to act on behalf of the feda or Elda in some circumstances, but
must not act beyond his bounds as this will be viewed seriously. He
parrotises all internal and external in4matua of the Ilya. He edits and
takes charge of all publications of the Ilya. The parrot promotes the
image of the club, publishes the club‟s activities and passes information
across to the populace. The name Parrot was coined for this port-folio
because the native African parrot does nothing but talk.

•D-FEDA OR (FEATHER II): He assists the general secretary of the Ilya. He


takes charge of the office of feda, when not around or suspended, he is
assumed to be the third in rank of the cabinet when the feda is suspended
or dekeged. He acts in collaboration with the feda.
•D-PARROT OE (PARROT II): He deputizes for the P.R.O He is assumed to be
in the 4th rank in the Ilya if the parrot is suspended or not around. He
is to work in collaboration with the parrot for effective dissemination
of information

•PURSE (THE TREASURE): Our mothers used to keep money and other valuables
things in the purse. The treasurer of the Kegites‟ club is therefore,
called the Purse. He keeps the club‟s money and he is a signatory to the
club‟s account.

•MARSHALL (Please Note: MARSHAL FOR MALE & OKPEKE MARSHAL FOR FEMALE): He
is the sergeant-at-arms of the club whose duty is for the security of the
Chief and other living souls. He is handy in restoring order and ensures
comrads are attentive during vibration by Chiefisis. He seizes the
regalia or capito of a suspended or dekeged member. He ensures that
everybody obeys the law of gravity during blessmatua, prayermus or at any
other time deemed fit.
Apointa-Anota = The superiority structure is as follows:
- A. G, Marshal
- Provost Marshal
- Okpeke Marshal
The Provost Marshal functions as the guard to the chief and to the
members of the club. He is always found standing next to chief like a
soldier man. The provost marshal takes charge of the security of the
chief and of the members of the club.

•PHILOSOPHER: He interprets the leaf/ticket brought by any comrad who is


excused to go out by Chief or any other presiding member during a
function. He is a key-tutorizer for intending comrades at the zoo. The
officer that tells stories and relays the history of the club to members
especially, the newly initiated members

•COWRY (FINANCIAL SECRETARY): Before coins and bills (currency notes)


were made and used as money, cowry used to be the money that is used in
making payment. The Financial Secretary collects money, annual
dues(annual legesy, etc) from the komrads and hands it on to the
treasurer. He collects all monies and dues on behalf of the Ilya, he is
the financial secretary to the Ilya. He is signatory to the Bank Account
of the Ilya. He heads or chairmans the Fund-raising Committee etc. He
collects money (Dues) from newly initiated comrades & fellows

•COMMISSIONER FOR GYRATION (C4G OR C4J): This officer is the one that
oversees gyrational activities, making sure that gyration is going on
smoothly without any form of interruption. He is the Chairman,
gyration/awareness committee. He is to work with Chief to organize the
gyration arena and ensures its neatness. He is to arrange for
electrification and lighting of the gyration abuna together with public
address system to be used. He works with the H.O.S to ensure a hitch free
gyration

•DIRECTOR OF SONGIES (D. O. S.): The DOS coordinate the singing


activities in the club. He sings and gives directions on who sings and
who echoes the songs. He recommends the songitos. He co-ordinates the
functions of songitos. He directs the songisis. He teaches the songitos
and comrads how to sing new and difficult songis.

•CRICKET: The cricket is a special and a highly valued position in the


supremost comradium (the Kegites‟ club). Whoever that can sing better
than all other singers in the club is usually assigned to this post i.e.
the head of singers. He leads the procession line. He vibrates in songs
during possession. He also announce information in an ilya, convergence
etc.

•HEAD OF DRUMMERS (H. O. D.): The HOD coordinates the drumming activities
of the club. He gives instructions on who drums (Pòmósìs) and what tune
should be produced. The HOD ensures that there is a balance between the
songs and the kinds of tunes being produced. The HOD instructs other
drummers (Drummittos) and direct tunes.

•DRUMITO: He drumitises during gyrations. He acts in accordance with


directives of the H.O.D to ensure the appropriate drumitisation is
applied on specific occasion. He co-operates with H.O.D to ensure that
the drumisis are maintained. He ensures that drums get to and leave the
gyration abuna at the appropriate time. He is a member of gyration
committee.

•LE POUR OR POURER: This is the person that is selected to pour holy
water in the shrine. He pours palmwine for everybody in the shrine. He
holds palmwine for chief to bless after closing or starting of comradic
functions such as minitappings, coronation, inductions etc. He pours
palmwine for the chiefisis for blessmatua. He makes holy H20 available
when coronating the egungun, He distributes holy water to the living
entities at gyration floor or in any comradic functions. He acts in
accordance with the directives of the Chief-in-charge of holy H20and head
welfarer.

•TAPPER: The tapper ensures availability of the holy water in the shrine.
He brings palm-wine to the gyration ground. He ensures the availability
of palmwine at the appointed time in the area abuna. He is the emergency
pourer if any of the 3 G-Lords in the office are not around.

•DIRECTOR OF SOCIALS (WELFARER): The welfarer takes charge of all


activities involving reception (of any kind) of the club at occasions.
The position is usually reserved for ladies/women because she can do it
better than men.

•TRANSPORT OFFICER (TRANSPORTA OR KÉTÉKÉTÉ): In the occasion that the


members of the Kegites‟ club have to travel from one place to the other
maybe for gyration, this officer takes charge. The transporter is the one
in charge of transporting arrangement whenever the club has to go for
outside functions. He organizes and arranges for vehicle and ensures that
members taken out for gyration (as the case may be) are returned back to
school. He looks for horse or ketekete for any migration. He collects
orlasis (cowries) for migration

•CURATOR: The curator functions like the abobakú (one that dies with the
King) in the traditional Yorùbá setting to the chief. He goes with the
chief everywhere and he goes on errand for the chief. He is in charge of
the properties of the Ilya, He liases with the Chief on acquisition and
maintenance of the properties of the Ilya. He takes care of the regalia
of the Chief and other things before procession in gyration.

•SPED OR COMMISSIONER FOR SPECAIL DUTIES: He is in-charge of special


duties; he can be directed by the chief or elder to act in place of any
of the unavailable G-Lords. He is to move about with the Chief during
comradic hours

•SHRINER: Shriner is in charge of shrine

•PALACE SECRETARY: Palace secretary is in charge of the activities in the


palace. He stays with the Chief; to assist him domestically and
comradically.
•ACCOUNTANT/ACCOUNTRESS: The accountant/accountress sells the palmwine in
the shrine.

•OLORI (QUEEN): Like the Yorùbá adage will say Àpónlé kò sí f‟Óba tí kò
l‟Olorì (There is no respect/honor for any king that has no wife). The
most important officer besides the chief is this last but not the least
officer, the Olorì: The Olorì is the wife or girlfriend to the chief. She
is the most respected officer of the club. While all other officers are
selected by the council of elders, Olorì is selected by no one else but
the chief himself. However, of all the port-folios in the Kegites‟ club,
the port-folio of the Olorì is the most competitive. The position usually
have more competitors than any other one (even when it is occupied; it is
usually still being competed for)
