LEARNING EPISODE 5: Learner Diversity: Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment

This learning Episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are structured or designed
to allow everyone's maximum participation for effective learning. You should be able to examine how
classroom management practices affect learning. This Episode enhances the application of the
theories learned in the following professional subjects such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching
and The Child and Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this Episode, you must be able to:
● plan on how to manage time, space, and resources; and provide a learning environment
appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet business-like. It
is a classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the following are observed:

● Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.

● Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
● Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.
● Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.
● Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences for such are
communicated.
● Classroom processes are democratic.

OBSERVE
Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observation.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages

2. How many boys are there> how many girls?

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?

4. Can the learners already work independently?

5. Describe their span of attention.

ANALYZE
AY 2023-2024
College of Teacher Education
Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices. It is also good to
ask the teacher for additional information, so you can validate your observation. Write your notes
below; and then organize your data in the Table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students'
belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if these areas for specific
purposes are not present?

In the classroom there are shelves for books, medical kit, trashbins. The area for shelves books are
properly arranged and organized, the medical kit area can be found in the teacher’s table and the
trashbins placed at the back. In my opinion, nothing would be different if this specific purposes will
not be present because learners can go to library if they want or require to read books, they can also
go to the medical clinic fo the assistance if they feel sick and outside the classroom they can throw
their garbages.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules reinforce
positive behavior?

1.Come to Class on Time.

2. Be Ready to Learn.
3. Listen and Follow Direction.
4. Raise your hand to Speak
5. Ask questions
6. Be respectful of others
7. Always do your best.
8. Try new things.
9. Believe in youself.
10. Work hard and have fun.

YES, this rules reinforce behavior because when the students follow the rules the classroom will be in
order and when the classroom is in order the students learn better.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher is available,
ask him/her to describe the process. What's the effect of students' participation in rule-making on
student's behavior?

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment
of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?

Before entering the room, my Resource Teacher will check the outside of the classroom if it has been
cleaned by the students. After that she will now enter the room and proceed to the Prayer, checking of
attendance, ask if there an assignment, discuss the topic, she ask questions to students about the topic,
and giving some announcements and leave the classroom. These tasks done through instruction.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help in managing
the class?

Yes, there is a seating arrangement. The basis of the arrangement is the alphabetical order of their
surname. Yes, it will help managing the class because the students inside of the classroom is well-
organized.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

The level of noise in the classroom is 5/10. Managing noise from students is challenging but my
resource teacher managed this noise by implementing rules, she will appoint one student to list down
the names of the student who are noisy while she’s discussing the lesson. She also use techniques like
one, two, three, eyes one me.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource Teacher do? Describe
the behavior strategies used.

My resource teacher restate the instruction to the learners that their participation is necessary in order
for them to get a score. The strategies used is the support of the teacher to his/her students to
participate well.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

My resource teacher verbally acknowledged his/her student if they do good in class, if they clean the
room, if they pass the assignment/activity on time and I think this is so crucial to the students to praise
them if they do good thing to boost their confidence.

REFLECT
Reflection as a future teacher

1. Why do you need to enforce positive behavior?

In my opinion, enforcing positive behavior creates a positive learning environments to all

the students. A postive behavior is crucial to a student so that he/she can perform every task
efficiently and overcome them. A student can also be encouraged to participate in activities
held at school to boost his/her confidence that is the reason why we need to enforce
behavior.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners' behavior?

Classroom organization and routines really affect the learners behavior because when classrooms
are well organized with clear routines, it foster the students sense of steadiness and predictability,
which can boost concentration, engagement, and output.
AY 2023-2024

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and
routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?

In my opinion, teachers should keep in mind that students have varied personalities, needs, and
wants, thus daily routines and organization rely on the student's age.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating
students? Why were they effective?

When i was in high school our adviser is strict specially during on class discussion and in my
opinion that is the best and effective way that the teacher should do, this could help the learners to
study and participate in the class. Also, we are teaching them to be responsible student and take
education seriously.

REFLECT
Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do you see
yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?

I see myself teaching Grade 9 students, Similar to my resource teachers, I will do the same routines
which are very easy and applicable in my students. First and foremost the opening prayer, seek
guidance to our Lord, secondly, checking of attendance; for me to know who are absent and late,
thirdly, recall the previous lesson that we discussed and asking them to give a briefly explanation
from the previous topic. Lastly, discussed the new topic and ask some questions to students and
give some announcements before leaving the classroom.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement at this level. Why would you choose these
rules?
AY 2023-2024
College of Teacher Education

The following are the rules that I want to Implement:

1.Always greet your TEACHER.

2. Always be READY
3. Listen to your TECHEAR
4. Raise your hand to Speak
5. Ask questions
6. Be respectful of others
7. Always do your best.
8. Be creative
9. Believe in youself.
10. FOLLOW the RULES

As a teacher you are the person in authority to implement rules. I choose this rules because I want
my future classroom to be organized and I want to established conducive learning environment for
my future students.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Ofcourse, for them to be involved in decision-making and to be aware to the classrules.By doing
this they have an idea whatever sanctions might be given if they violate the classrules.
