2023 INTERNSHIP REPORT

CHAPTER ONE/1/

1 INTRODUCTION
Industrial visit a better situation for students to dig and cultivate their theoretical background in
practical real world. In addition it places student in a strange and dynamic environment that
perhaps forces to test, and observe problems and challenges in real world activities. A student
develops a sense of punctuality, work ethics, honesty and loyalty, social life and entrepreneurial
skill from an internship. However, far too little attention is paid to internship students on how
they proceed in learning for their duration of time.

In my fourty five days stay in Brhanu Bantider heavy vehicle Maintenance Company, I have
got several opportunities to visit different machines and different tools which are frequently used
for car maintenance. Besides this, with in a fourty five days stay in the factory, I have spent
ample time with employs, head officers, technical advisors, Forman’s and different workers with
sufficient orientation and practical involvement on the factory.

The reader should bear in mind that, in order to capture the essence of my report in a succinct
and clear way I attempt to use tables and figures due to practical constraints which cannot
provide comprehensive review of the automobile.

The overall structure of the report takes a form of five chapters. Chapter one begins with
introduction by illuminating the background of the company, mission and vision, values and also
laying out service of the company. Chapter two is concerned about management, training and
employee information including major duties, the supervisor role and qualities developed during
our internship. Chapter three is concerned with Internship experience on Auto- service
department maintenance schedule for periodic service, Power transmission, Auto
Electricity, Engine maintenance, Automotive Fuel System service, Automotive Tire
&Wheel service, duties in the body and paint shop, the major technologies used in the
company, and problems that we observe in the company. Chapter four is briefly explaining about
the benefits of doing an internship and final conclusions about internship. The last chapter is
recommendation and references that I have used in the writing of this report.

3.1.2 Daily Technical Responsibilities in the Organization

This is the time interval from the starting up to ending of an internship and covered about
four weeks. In this time the major responsibility was to work out any technical activities in
the workshop as ordered by the company supervisor and Technician.

In this working period I did many activities in all workshops which are given by our assistant
technicians. For example, in the service and repair shop I am ordered to check and
replace automotive parts such as; Oil filter, air filter, air cleaner, shock absorber, break pad,
break shoos and wash and assemble drum. Also I have greased the propeller shafts, check
and change the oils of gearbox and differential. In the body and paint shop we are ordered to
maintain the frame by using different technology and we perform this by accurately with our
assistant technicians through computerized way.

Daily afternoon is the discussion of technical ideas; criticize working techniques and
mechanisms, criticizing working and supporting tools and explaining engineering theories that
are applicable in the automotive world for the technicians and developing short note for my
report by discussing with chief mechanics about my morning work.

3.4 Problems and Challenges Observed From the Industry

Birhanu Bantider vehicle Maintenance Company is a huge company that provides
quality services of repair and fixed time vehicle inspection (periodic maintenance). And
18 | P a g e

ASTU MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

2023 INTERNSHIP REPORT

also provide genuine spare parts for the customers. The quality of products and better service
they provide made them built reputation and respect in the field.

In every company and industry, as well, if you deeply observe you may arrive at something
that may have risk or harmful but it may be quite small or uncountable. During our
internship we observe problems that may cause dangers to employees. Some of these are;

3.4.1 Workshop cleaning

This is the worst scenario that hesitate the cleaners. We perceived the situation at first
glance. Since the workshop is very wide only two cleaners have the responsibilities of
cleaning every time a vehicle parts are disassembled (dismantled) and oils are discharged.

The impact of cleaning the floor and oil manually hesitate the cleaners much. The company
lacked expertise to deal with the cleaning machine and so dependent too much on the readily
available technical ways of manually cleaning the floor. The company was not aware of
cleaner’s recommendation and comment on how to address the problem.

3.4.2 Air Filter Cleaning

The air filter cleaning is done by using the primitive ways of blowing dust here and there by
using a pressurized air. The dust when inhaled has the ability of bringing chronic lung
cancer.

3.4.3 Engine washing

This is another dangerous issue that may be considered. Engine and its internal parts are
washed by the benzene and its internal parts are washed by the use of petrol with pressurized
air. Since the carbon droplets will mix with the atmosphere, while inhaled may cause a great
and catastrophic damage to health. Even if there are many problems as micro level these are
only identified as problem identification.

This problem identification may seem exaggerated and someone may think, people working
in that area may die. They really die but it does not kill workers over night it is a matter of
years. There are also an other problems that may cause danger to the employee; The
safety of the internship students during car maintenance the company should give

19 | P a g e

ASTU MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

2023 INTERNSHIP REPORT

attention by giving them safety clothes and shoes for their safety and also the company
should consider the waist that is used for gearbox carriage.

3.5 Benefits of the pervious courses for this assignment

Our major aim was to get more practical knowledge and skills which are related with our
courses. As a result, during this internship period we worked at different stations
corresponding with work flow line of the assembly steps in the company. In this different
work flow lines different steps of the assemblies and maintenance are performed.

From our previous class some of our courses was beneficial and advantageous. These courses
helped us by widening our mind in our internship program and helped us to understand more
easily. For instance, the courses that we use majorly are;

i) Welding science: - helped us for join different metals and also cutting process by using
different types of welding such us

Oxyacetylene welding
Metal inert gas welding(MIG)
Arc welding and
Washer welding

ii) Machine drawing:-helped us to look things detailed way and to memorize the design in
assembling structure.

iii) Machine process:-it helped us for primary and secondary metal working by using
various machines such as, grinding machine, drilling machine and etc.

iv) Design of Machine Element: - helps to know detail about design consideration of
brake clutch and other vehicle components

CHAPTER FOUR /4/

4 Reflection and conclusion on internship

4.1 Benefits of Doing an Internship

Finding work can be a real challenge, especially if you don't have any experience. Yet to
get experience you must first find a job. It's a nasty catch that can be difficult to get around but
an internship is a good way to do it. Internships provide work experience opportunities to
university students, recent graduates and people considering career changes. Employers are
willing to hire interns with little or no experience, especially if the intern is willing to accept little
or no monetary compensation. However, the benefits of doing an internship go far beyond your
pay cheque.

4.1.1 Practical Skill

As we know in the class room we learn most of the time theoretically and sometimes little
practical experience. In the internship we get more valuable practical knowledge through our
daily work experience. Therefor internship is the best way to learn practical experience by
relating with the class room knowledge.

4.1.2 Gain Valuable Work Experience

An internship provides the opportunity to gain hands on work experience that you just can’t get
in the classroom. First time job seekers and career changers aren’t usually desirable candidates,
but companies are willing to train them as interns and give them the experience they would need
to get a job.

4.1.3 Transition into a Job

Employers see interns as prospective employees and many finish their internships and continue
working with the company full time. Internships are the number one way for employers to find
new staff. Think of it as a really long interview, after which you’ve proved that you are a capable
and hardworking employee. Just as you’re giving the industry and the company a trial run,
they’re doing the same for you.

4.1.4 Networking Opportunities

Internships are a great way to meet people in your field. Even if you have experience, knowing
people never hurts. An internship allows you to meet people who might help you land a job later
on and give you the contacts in the industry you’re trying to break into. Plus, references from
people in the industry will really add weight to your application.

4.1.5 Apply Classroom Knowledge

An internship can be seen as the pinnacle of your undergraduate education and give you the
chance to use the skills you've learned in the classroom in a real-world setting. It’s a chance to
prove the worth of your qualifications and to show that you can perform in the role you has been
given.

4.1.6 Gain Confidence

Getting experience is a great way to build your confidence. What's more, if you have an
impressive resume, you will be more confident in your chances of securing a job. After you’ve
done an internship, if an interviewer asks if you know how to do something, you won’t say “um,
yes, I think I would be able to do that but can say “absolutely and supplement your assertion with
examples.

4.2 Conclusion
During internship period I tried to work and learn some of the duties and tasks in repair
and service shop. I have acquired adequate knowledge about the mechanics of automobile,
its systems and sub-systems in a simplified manner. We have also dealt with the essential
construction and principles of operation of various components as a part of total vehicle system.

Moreover, I tried to grasp basic knowledge and skill that are necessary and sufficient to maintain and
provide service for modern automobiles.

In study of internship many problems will solved and if the study widens its horizon students are
able to solve many problems related to industries in the future. In our world of competition
vehicles provide a best track to let everyone do what he/she want and to win the race. We are one

of the competent we prefer to win our race by studying the track provider (vehicles) this
motivation encouraged us to know more about designs of the cars and their systems.

Finally, the internship program has a great importance in order to create educated as
well as entrepreneur man power. The longer the time of the internship period the more will be
experiences and advantages. This importance is not only experience in the technical aspects but
also in social communication and reaction, developing taking responsibility, experience of
leadership and team work. Interpersonal communication in their day to day work, engagement in
the team work and etc. the problem here is that we learned theoretically. If we do not get
opportunity to observe some aspects in the world more over it motivates us to change our
theoretical knowledge to practical application.

CHAPTER FIVE/5/

5 Recommendations
During my one month stay in the company I have observed some encouraged and defects that
step a little back during this internship. In this part of my report I will try to suggest some ideas
for hosting company as well as for my university.

5.1 For the hosting company

5.1.1 Strong side

The internship program hold benefits to the supervisor and hosting company by providing
motivated workers without any payment to an organization and furnishing the opportunity to
train possible future employees for the organization. And the company has a good initiative
program for the intern candidates. Participating in internship program allows the field supervisor
and organization to maintain a working relationship with the university in which we enrolled and
may identify different problems and seek for solution.

Therefore, we suggest that, the company should host more intern students in the future for the
common good of the student and its company.

5.1.2 Weak side

The weak side of the company not that Mach visible. But they did not use our ability and our
knowledge for their problems inside the company they consider us simply to observe the
machine design and how to manufacture them for future they so they didn’t give us any project
to perform so this is there week side

The company is limited to provide resource and facilities such as library, internet access and
other reference materials for the intern students to progress for any type of intended project for
further insight should be fulfilled.

5.2 For the university

5.2.1 Strong side

Having an internship offers a list of advantages to the students, as mentioned above, for instance
it helps us to grow not only practical experience and knowledge related to our academic and
career goals, but also our social skills because it is known that we will meet a lot of people and
would deal with accordingly.

Even though we describe the feeling negatively below, the university has very strong side. It
pays commitment for the presences of the internship program such activity should continue
because our country Ethiopia nowadays follows the journey of technology. It needs
technologically graduated students .The University is doing its assignment by supporting the
country’s policy.

Other strong side of our university is giving us a chance to choose an appropriate company by
ourselves.

It sends the advisors for each internship student who are distributed throughout the companies they
are accepted and this initiated the students to work properly.

5.2.1 Weak side

The week side of our university is not cooperated with the organization. That means the
university did not give any idea about the intern ship for the company servants and they Even
though our university has strong side, there are also weak sides such as the students are not
practice in internship according to their fields. As we have seen power stream students not
necessary to attend in the internship in the factory .the university do this assignment in the
future to distribute the students accordingly their stream and the department advisor did not
supervise thought out internship period.

There were different courses which have laboratory tests in their content .But we can say almost
we didn’t see any test. We have lost those skills before joining the internship. We were too
unfamiliar to the tests in factory.
