Lesson
Taking Care of our Earth
1
Earth is our home. There is no other planet where people,
plants and animals can survive. However, people now face many
problems concerning the environment.
When Earth, the place that we are living in, is not as clean as it
used to be, what might happen to us?
We should care for the environment. What can we do to help
solve problems concerning the environment?

7
What’s In
Read each statement carefully. Put a check ( ) if the statement is
correct or cross (x) if it is NOT. Do it on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Children should take care of the environment.
2. Instead of using plastic bags, use paper bags or reusable bags.
3. Polluted water is safe to drink.
4. Throwing your waste everywhere is a good practice.
5. It is healthy to live in a dirty place.

What’s New

Read the story below.

Family Santos Dinner
Family Santos loves to eat dinner together while watching the
evening news. They are happy to hear good news but they feel sad
for the bad news.

A strong typhoon will enter the country. Roni asked his parents
why landslides and flooding always happen when there is a typhoon.

8
His father answered, “One of the reasons is because of logging”.
While her mother answered, our environment is already abused by
the people that is why floods and landslides occur.
What should we do to take care of our environment? Rona
asked.
What might happen if people continue abusing our Earth? Roni
asked again.

What is It

Based on the story, let us help Roni and Rona answer their
questions.
Some of the activities of people bring harmful changes to Earth.
People should be awakened from the reality that our environment is
vulnerable. In many places, land, water, and air become polluted.
Pollution happens when land, water, and air get dirty.

Logging which is cutting

of trees is one of the reasons
why our forests are dying.
Even animals and plants are in
danger of becoming extinct.

Many people living on

a mountain side suffers from
the soil erosion. Whenever it
rains heavily or a strong
typhoon came landslides
9
always occur.
Tree-planting activities
can help save our nature by
preventing floods and soil
erosion.

Bodies of water get

dirty when people dump
garbage into rivers, seas,
lakes, and even canals.
Polluted water can kill
aquatic animals and plants.
It also makes water unsafe
to drink.

The garbage you throw inappropriately will return to you in

some ways. Flooding is a big problem in our country nowadays.
Whenever it rains heavily or a strong typhoon comes, flooding in
many areas happens.

Practice wastes
segregation. Throw your
wastes in trash cans. Reuse
and recycle. Sell old
newspapers and bottles.

10
Harmful gases from
factories and cars make the
air dirty. Polluted air is
dangerous. It can make
people sick.

Walking and riding a

bike in going to the work
place and other places is a
big help to reduce air
pollution.

People who ride their bikes or take a walk are not just helping
the environment, but they are also exercising and practicing a
healthy lifestyle.
If people practice different helpful ways to show care for the
environment, our Mother Earth can be a safer place to live in.
