Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions below it.
Citizenship is a sacred honour, a plaque we carry proudly on our shoulders and a burden
pressing hand on our backs. A citizen is a member of a country. He/ she has the right to ask for
protection, the duty to protect their country and obey its laws. In other words, citizenship is the
relationship between an individual and a state in which the individual belongs and
owesallegiance.
Fortunately, being a good citizen doesn’t stop at the exchange of rights and duties, itrequires a
lot of civilized behaviour and responsible acts. The love for your country also known
aspatriotism always pushes loyal citizens to respect their environment and other people.
All members of our community from the youngest to the eldest have to cooperate. By
cooperating, I don’t mean giving huge efforts. Simple acts and easy behaviour can help us
ameliorate our level of life. As citizens, and students in particular, all we have to do include the
steps below:
- Start with your own home, clean it regularly, and take care of your front door area.
- Be a good neighbour by caring about others.
- Respect your neighbours, help them if necessary and act politely.
- Do not litter or throw trash on the street, or anywhere on the campus.
- Let’s try to walk wisely, on the pavement because it causes fewer difficulties to drivers in the
city.
- Respect your school, especially its doors, walls and windows. They are not yours. You
only borrow them for a year or more.
- Being a citizen is a source of pride. Don’t try to ignore your origin in front of foreigners.
Have you ever seen any of them deny being who they are?
- Living together in peace and tolerance with people of diverse religious and ethnic
backgrounds is a sign of good citizenship.
- If you can study about your country, it would be great. See the extreme diversity you
have (the deserts, seas and other water bodies, mountains, different dialects, traditions,
cultures and traditional clothes, songs and festivals).
When you become a parent, teach this to your children. Citizenship starts from childhood,
and only ends by the time you die. It is only by really practising those simple acts that our daily
lives can get better. I hope this will help us understand another meaning of good citizenship.

Englishs entences and your own words as far as possible.
It was a hot and dusty afternoon. Kwabena sat at his desk and looked out of the classroom over
the playground. Kwabena was uneasy in his chair. Wasn’t it time for the bell to go? He thought
of hismother at home. She must be preparing the evening meal. Something was wrong with his
mother. She was so sad and silent these days. His father too was sad. He continued looking
outside.
“Kwabena, what’s the matter with you?”. Kwabena turned his eyes back to his exercise –
book.“You’ve only done one exercise and it is even wrong” said Mr Adu, the teacher. “Is the
anything matter?”Kwabena shook his head.
“The world is upside-down today children”, said Mr Adu. Solace has got the sum right and
Kwabena has got it wrong”. Everybody laughed because Kwabena was usually the best boy in
the class and Solace was always at the bottom. Mensa continued laughing after others. Mensa
was always the second in the class and he hated Kwabena for being first. The two boys had
never been friends.“Kwabena, Mensa will beat you this term if you are not careful. You’ll have
to stay here after school. I want to talk to you”, said the teacher. The bell rang and the other
children began to leave the classroom.
“Kwabena, I’m sorry of your father’s decision to take you away from school at the end of the
term, very sorry indeed. Your father came to see me this morning. He said you were leaving
school and going to live with your uncle in Accra. You will learn his trade’, said Mr Adu.“No
sir, my father has never said anything about my leaving school. He wants me to stay at school.
I know he does. It is a mistake. My uncle in Accra? I don’t know him. I have never seen him”.
“I’m afraid there’s no mistake. You must go home now. Your father and mother will tell
youabout it. We will be sorry to miss you. You have been top boy in the class for a long time.
Kwabena stood outside the dusty playground and looked around him. Everything seemed
strange o him. Not far was Mensa. “What’s the matter?” He asked. “What’s wrong?” Mensa
had hidden himself behind a tree to listen to what Mr Adu was saying to Kwabena. Mensa
laughed. “Did the teacher say who is top of the class this term?” Mensa asked.
“You will be top of the class next term” said Kwabena reached the house, he could hear the
sound of his mother’s machine.
“Hello my son!” she looked up and greeted him with a smile.
“Mother, is it true that I must leave school and go to my uncle?” She didn’t reply. The
Answer was clear from her face.

COMPETENCE: Using language to talk about gender issues and the quest for excellence.
TASK: Carefully read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
In September 1995, the United Nations held a conference in Beijing, China. The aim of the
conference was to draw attention to the issue of women’s rights because millions of women
around the world did not enjoy equality with men. The United Nations recognized that gender
equality was a human rights issue and that without equality between women and men,
countries could not develop.
Women have also come a long way since that conference. They realize that the problems
women experience are similar all over the world. Women know that gender issues are human
rights issues. They know that they should not be ashamed to speak out when their human rights
are being violated. Many women now feel free to discuss issues that affect them. They join
support groups and take part in discussions. They are also more willing to ask help. They are
no longer willing to be victims.
However, there remain many areas of concern. For example, violence against women is still
quite common in marriages. Many young girls are still forced to marry when they are too
Page 9 of 24
young. Women are very often raped and abused both during times of war and times of peace.
Therefore, gender issues are an important part of the United Nations 201and 5 Sustainable
Development Goals.

About three kilometres from the neighbourhood of Damas, hundreds of residents are fetching
water at a stream at “Tam-Tam Week-End”. Families are washing their clothes and animals are
drinking from the said stream. Fabian Tantoh, one of the residents getting water from that
stream said that he would filter the water before he drinks it. For almost two weeks past, there
is no pipe-borne water supply in his area and people depend on water from rain which they
filter for drinking.
However, not all people are given filter; therefore, some are drinking water direct from the
stream. The people who have enough money pay for bottled water. With the over three million
population of Yaoundé, barely 35 percent of the needed 300,000 cubic meters of pipe-borne
water are being supplied. Most people are turning to unsafe water sources just to get the supply
they need. Cameroon government is planning to increase the water supply of Yaoundé by
500,000 cubic meters in two years’ time by tapping into one of Cameroon’s largest rivers,
Sanaga. This move will supply over 30 percent to 60 percent of the population of Yaoundé.

Shopping
Shopping is a necessary part of life which very few people can avoid. It is a daily
routine for some people. Some people shop for pleasure while other people go shopping just to
buy the necessary items in order to survive. The weekend is usually a good time to go shopping
because people have free time from work. At this time the shops are usually very busy because
people try to get the best items for the lowest price before the item runs out of stock.
Some people go shopping more regularly than other people to browse products in shops
even when they do not have much money. This is known as window shopping and allows
people to plan ahead and save for the things they want to buy in the future or wait for the items
to drop in price. Some people spend a lot of time looking for bargains while others do not think
of the price and are happy to spend a lot. Some people believe that the more expensive the
item, the better the quality, but this is not always true. It is sensible to buy items which are
affordable, but some people use a credit card or borrow money from the bank so that they can
buy the items they really want rather than wait for it.
Sometimes shopping can be stressful when choosing a gift to buy for other people for a
special occasion. It is common to buy a gift voucher so that a friend or loved one can go
shopping themselves at their own convenience. Shopping online is often popular with people
who have a busy lifestyle. People are able to order their necessary and luxury items from the
comfort of their own home, or even on the move. Delivery is usually free and items are often
cheaper than in shops on the high street. The only real problem is that the item description and
quality may be different than what they hoped for. This could mean the customer may become
disappointed with the item they receive and will need to return it at their own cost. People who
go to shops to do their shopping often use self-service payment machines. This usually saves
Page 17 of 24
time as the shopper does not need to join a long queue. However, it can be frustrating when the
machine has a problem and the sales assistant is not always available to help.

Nowadays, the government has realized that we cannot do without computers in our
development programmes; therefore, computer sciences have been introduced in our school
curriculum. Many secondary schools and some lucky and wealthy primary schools in big cities
are equipped with computers to train young Cameroonians.
The main objective is to enable as many people as possible, not only to know the
different parts of a computer, but also to use it properly in their active life. However, the
Government Computer Programme does not go without problems: the high cost of the
machines and difficulty of equipping all the schools with computers. The lack of trained
personnel is also an obstacle. Most of our rural localities do not have electricity to facilitate
computer installation.
Finally and paradoxically, while doctors use computers to fight against AIDS, young
girls exploit them for prostitution through the internet.
