‘The Conservative governments’ policies in Northern Ireland between 1979

and 1987 made ‘The Troubles’ worse’. Assess the validity of this view.

The policies of the Conservative Party are overwelmingly clear in making the ‘Troubles worse ‘: this
was due to the inadeuqate attempt for an agreeemnt in the Anlgo-Irish Agreeemnt, the insensitive
dismissal of the hunger strikes, and Thatcher’s own personal unwilligness to compromise.

It could be argued that the policies of the Conservative governement were the were not directly the
reasons the Troubles became worse, this is because the Torries made a significant attempt at a
peace proposal – as evidenced in the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985. This policy showed a serious
attmept by the torries, to resolve the troubles and make it better, thus it oculd be argued that it
would not be fair to to attribute the worsening of the troubles to conservtaice party sonidering they
made serious attempts to resolve the Troubles. However a closer analysis of the agreement shows
how poorly recived it was by the Unionist who felt that the agreement gave too many concssions to
the Irish. This mass rally in 1985 in which 200,000 people attended shows how outraged the
Unionists were. This was predomiantly due to the fact that Unionsit were excluded from the
agreement process and it also entailed that the Republic of Ireland would role in the governance of
Northern Ireland for the first time ever – this mass ourtage shows a poor attmpt which made the
Troubles worse not in that it exacerbated it, but only delayed an adeequate soloution to the
problem.

It could also be argued that the conservative policy made the Troubles better in their policy of
refusal when it came to the negotiation of terrorists. This unwaivering stance and refusal to
negotiate despite the Bright Bombing which had paralysed the wife of Norman Tebbitt, shows the
the decisive nature of the ‘iron lady’ and her policies. Thus, such policies made the Troubles better
inasmuch as they proved theat violence was not going to solve the conflict, as the governemnt was
not going to entertain such violence. Alternatively, a more apt analysis of the events was that the
policy of no-negotiation only portrayed the UK as callous to the desiring the self-determination of
republicanism, and therfore only increased tensions between the Westminister and the Republicans,
making the troubles worse. Such policies involved a callous dismissal of the Hunger Strikes of 1982
which killed the likes of Bobby Sands who had died after 66 days of protesting. This only depicted the
conservtaive party as being intrasignent and unwilling to compromise which only exacerbate the
tensions and make the ‘troubles worse’.

It could be argued that the policy of implacabilty and the insesnitive policies merely inflamed the
troubles. The policies depicted Westminister in genuienly being interested in a immeidate soloution,
this is evidenced in the disallowing of Sinn Fein MP’s into Britain such as the Bobby Sands and Gerry
Adams. This only disencouraged legitamte diplomatic attempts – the likes of the ‘Twin Track’ policies
implememented by the Ulster Unionist Paarty which committed to values of non-violence as a
means of reoslving the problem. This made increased the tenions which only made conflict worse
causing parties involved to resolve to violence, making the ‘troubles worse’. The orders of shoot to
kill by British soliders which only caused the contiued suppors for the IRA highlights how the troubles
were made worse primarily due to how Thatcher had a policy in which she refused to attend to
grievances.
In conclusion it is fair to evaluate that the polcies made the ‘troubles’ worse dspite the efforts of an
agreement, the agreement were futile and only agrgrivated the situation as it depicted Westiminster
as a distant implacable power who only inflamed the situation in their vacuos attempt of an
agreement.
