CHARLES’ LAW

What is the relationship between volume and temperature at constant pressure of a gas?

WHY ?

The volume - temperature relationship in gases (k = V/T) was determined by and named
after Jacques Charles . In his experiment, Jacques Charles trapped a sample of gas in a cylinder
with a movable piston in water bath at different temperatures. Jacques Charles found out that
different gases decreased their volume by factors 1/273 per °C of cooling. With this rate of reduction,
if gas will be cooled up to -273°C, it will have zero volume. Charles’ Law states that at constant
pressure, the volume of a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature (
Kelvin (K).)
Kelvin is the basic unit for measuring temperature in the International System (SI). It denotes the
absolute temperature scale whereby 0K or absolute zero is defined as the temperature when molecules will
have the lowest energy. Temperature units and their equivalents: 0˚C= 273.15K 0˚C = 32˚F
Model 1 TEMPERATURE CONVERSION
Sample : 278.15K = ________C
Sample : 5C= ________K
K = °C + 273.15 °C = K – 273.15

K = 5°C + 273.15 °C = 278.15K – 273.15

= 278.15 K = 5C
Convert the absolute temperature of the ff. using this formula: K = °C + 273.15

1. 0C = ___ K

2. 100C = ______ K

3. 25C = _______ K

Give the equivalent Celsius temperature of the following absolute temperature using the
formula: °C = K – 273.15

1. 293.15 K = _______ C
2. 100K = _______ C
3. 395K = _______ C

READ!
In 1787, the French inventor Jacques Charles, while investigating the inflation of his
manned hydrogen balloon, discovered that the volume of a gas varied directly with temperature.
Charles's Law states that the volume of a given mass of gas varies directly with the absolute
temperature of the gas when pressure is kept constant. The temperatures are conventionally
measured in Kelvin, the SI unit of temperature.

Charles' law states that for a fixed amount of an ideal gas its volume is directly proportional to
its temperature at constant pressure. Mathematically, the direct relationship of Charles's Law can be
represented by the equation:

V α T at constant pressure
To remove the proportionality h sign, a constant, k, is introduced.
V = kT, then k = V
T
If the same gas is brought to different temperatures, it will give two different volumes.
The equation will become
V1 V2
---- = ----
T1 T2

1. How is Charles’ Law applied in hot air balloons? An air balloon consists of a bag, a basket to
carry passengers, and a source of heat. The heat source is usually a fuel like propane which on
burning causes the heating of the air surrounding it.

2. If you get a chance to read the instructions on a bottle of deodorant, you might have read the
warning signs indicating the bottle to be kept away from the sunlight and high temperature. How is
Charles’ Law applied in this situation?
