Surahs Edited Final 1
Surahs Edited Final 1
Allah in Himself
1. AYAT-UL-KURSI (2:255)
“Allah. There is no god but He, the living, the self-subsisting, eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are
all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permits? He knows
what is before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass any of His knowledge except as He wills. His
Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is
(a)
1. The „Verse of the Throne‟ contains the theme of Oneness of Allah (Tawhid), Who is immortal and totally
independent.
2. He is unlike His creation because He does not sleep nor get tired in what He does.
3. He has complete authority over everything as He looks after all the heavens and the earth whereas no
one is needed to look after Him. Surah Ash-Shura says, “To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on
earth: and He is most High, most Great”.
4. No one can intercede on behalf of anyone without His permission and when they are granted such
permission they will act within limits, as set out by Almighty Allah.
5. The knowledge of Allah is infinite and perfect and humans only know what He allows them to know.
6. “His Throne” here refers to His majesty, uniqueness, knowledge (Omni-science) and having total
power (Omnipotence). It emphasizes how he is the only One who can make decisions about his
creation. He is transcendent and completely independent from His creation. The Holy Quran says, “Say
(O Prophet) Allah alone is the creator of everything and He is the One. Dominant over all”.
(b)
1. This verse makes Muslim realize that all power and authority lies with Allah alone. He does as He wills,
so it gives them the confidence to turn only to Him for help in all matters and to ask for His forgiveness.
2. It affirms the fundamental belief of Muslims to worship none but Allah and it emphasizes on the perfect
kingdom of Allah. So, a believer must not bow down or surrender himself before a tyrant or any
worldly power and unjust authority.
3. It refers to God as unsleeping so we must remain pious and stay away from evil as He is watching us
all the time.
4. It signifies Allah‟s complete and perfect knowledge which is around us so we should not only strive to
get that knowledge but more importantly request Him for this as He alone can provide it. Therefore,
we should frequently recite the following Quranic prayer: “O my Lord! Increase my knowledge”
(Ameen).
5. It was said by Holy Prophet (PBUH) to be one of the best passages of the Quran. Thus, Muslims recite it
daily for protection and blessings.
2. SURAH AL ANA’M (101 to 103)
101. To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can He have a son when He has
no consort? He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all things. 102. That is Allah, your Lord!
there is no god but He, the Creator of all things: then worship Him: and He has power to dispose of all
affairs. 103. No vision can He Him, but His grasp is over all vision: He is above all comprehension, yet is
acquainted with all things.
(a)
1. The main theme of these verses is God‟s power i.e. His Omnipotence. Allah‟s rule extends over entire
universe which means He is All-Powerful. He is the only one to control the Heavens and the Earth and
everything originates with Him.
2. Allah is not a physical being. He is too different from humans and is free from all human attributes. He
is far superior to be in need to have children or spouse. “And it behooves not the Most Affectionate that
he should take a son’; therefore, He is far beyond our understanding and the Holy Quran in this regard
says, “And there is none like Him”.
3. Furthermore, He has knowledge of everything i.e. His Omni-Science. Although humans cannot
understand Him, yet Allah understands everything in creation.
4. He is the sole creator of everything which negates any concept of other deities. Thus, humans should
turn to Him as He is the only One who has the power to help humans.
5. Also, Allah is far beyond human imagination and they cannot perceive Him. However, Allah sees and
hears everything they do. Therefore they should worship Allah alone and turn to Him to reward their
actions.
(b)
1. These verses of Surah Al- Ana‟m emphasizes the importance of tawhid for Muslims. Muslims are being
asked to reflect upon His relationships as it‟s totally impossible for Him to have physical relations with
any of His creations or to have family etc. because He is the creator and is therefore, unique.
2. In addition, the passage also categorically negates the false belief of God having any wife or
children, and thus, Muslims, in this way, develop a clearer concept of Tawhid and understand that Shirk
is the only unpardonable sin in the sight of God.
3. Our actions, words and thoughts are not hidden from Him. Hence, we should be always careful of our
deeds. The Quran reminds Muslims this repeatedly: “And He is with you wherever you are”.
4. By recognizing His supremeness, we should worship Him alone and be careful to fast and pray etc. to
fulfill all our obligations to Him. Similarly, we should only turn to Him for help as He is the only One
who can fulfill their needs.
1. The main theme of this surah is Unity & Oneness of Allah i.e. Tawhid.
2. Allah being the Sole Creator and Controller of everything that exists including the sun and the moon speaks
through them that He is the Most Powerful thus He alone is worthy of worship.
3. The passage also negates the idea of paganism and teaches that the celestial bodies like sun and the moon are
among the signs of Allah to show mankind his Power and Greatness and make them understand that they are not
to be worshipped as there are inferior and not equal to Him. The Holy Quran says: “Behold in the creation of the
Heaven and the Earth and the alternation of the Night and Day. There are indeed signs for men of understanding”.
(b)
1. The surah creates a strong link with Allah. This is because it makes Muslims understand Allah is the Creator of
everything that exists so they should not depend on anything like sun, moon, money or anyone like a famous
person. Hence, they should only look up for Allah and only worship him.
2. The celestial bodies which are creation of Allah are moving according to the law of Almighty Allah and they have
been created only to facilitate mankind. Thus Muslims must understand that they being too the creation of Allah
should follow Him and mould their lives according to His instructions.
3. When Muslims realize the purpose of creation of such things and recognize that they are not the objects of
worship, then they become more steadfast and only worship their Creator i.e. Al mighty Allah. Thus in this way
they not only avoid shirk which is the greatest of all sins but also become humble and thankful to God for His
countless bounties.
4. Muslims see the signs of Allah everywhere. The way He runs the nature, the shift of day and night. Thus when
they observe such changes in environment, they recognize the wonders of Allah‟s Greatness and get close to
Him.
5. Ideal order and harmony in the objects of nature also makes Muslims realize that Allah is the most perfect and
they should only depend upon Him to improve their lives.
almost rent asunder from above them, and the angels celebrate the praises of their Lord, and pray for forgiveness
for beings on earth: Behold! Verily Allah is He, the oft-forgiving, the most merciful.
(a)
1. The main theme of this passage is the Unity and Oneness of Allah or Tawhid.
2. The Heavens are almost torn apart due to His greatness above them.
3. It says that Allah is the Owner and Master of everything that exists. This is because He created them
and so no one else has a share in His ownership as the Holy Quran says in Ayat-al-Kursi: "His Throne
extends over the Heavens and the earths".
4. It also mentions about the angels who are also His creation, and a part of their duties that is to praise
Allah and ask for forgiveness for people. Thus Allah is the Most Merciful Who forgives His people and
shows them the right path like He forgave Adam when he disobeyed Allah in Paradise. Similarly, He
guided Abraham to righteousness when Hazrat Ibrahim was looking for the true God.
(b)
1. In this passage God tells humankind of His power and control over all things. Thus, they should
remember that they do not have any power in comparison.
2. Muslims understand that God is Merciful, even when they have committed wrong actions. Thus they
realize that they always have someone to turn to in times of need.
3. As God is merciful to humankind, they in turn should be grateful and also try to be forgiving of others,
even if they have been hurt or injured. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “Allah does not show mercy to
those who do not show mercy to others”
4. He is a loving God Who has created angels to pray for believers and it is His love that the people
who have touched the extreme limits in disbelief, polytheism, atheism, sinfulness and tyranny, have
been receiving respite after respite for years so that they may mend their ways.
5. SURAH AL- IKHLAS (112:1 to 4)
1. Say: He is Allah, the one and only; 2. Allah, the eternal, absolute; 3. He does not beget, nor is He begotten; 4.
And there is none like Him.
(a)
1. The theme of this Surah is Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) which is one of the pillars of Islam and articles of faith.
Although there are other surahs which explain the doctrine of Tawhid but this Sura was specifically revealed to
describe His Oneness. It tells that Allah is the only One God and He has no hint of plurality.
2. He is ever living and will never die i.e. He is immortal.
3. He is absolute, therefore He is completely independent.
4. Furthermore, He is unique in is His existence and has no physical relationship with any of His creations. He has
no partners or family. The Holy Quran says at another place “How can He (Allah) have a son when He has
no consort".
5. Also this Sura tells that there is no one similar to Allah or to His qualities because He is the Creator and others
are creations.
(b)
1. Surah Al Ikhlas stresses upon Oneness of Allah i.e. Tawhid. It makes people realize that they should do not take
created things like sun/moon or other people like famous ones/saints as their lord. Thus, this passage forbids
Muslims from committing shirk i.e. associating partners with Allah.
2. This Surah tells Muslims that they should only depend upon Allah for help & forgiveness as He is Eternal &
Absolute.
3. It makes them understand that Allah has no family. Thus, they avoid making the mistake of believing in God
having children or partners or anyone to share his authority.
4. Furthermore by this passage Muslims also realize that Allah is far beyond their perception and totally different
from them.
5. This passage is frequently recited by Muslims in their daily prayers which regularly refresh their belief in purity
and supremeness of God.
6. It is one of the surah which Muslims recite for protection.
7. It is also considered to be the most significant passage of the Holy Quran as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that
it is one third of the Holy Qur‟an.
1. The main theme of this passage is Unity and Oneness of Allah (Tawhid). These verses tell us that Allah is the only
Creator and Sustainer of man and everything that exists. Thus it orders mankind not to associate partners with Allah
as it is shirk which is an unpardonable sin. Holy Qurans says, “Allah forgives not setting up partners with Him,
but He forgives everything else to whom He pleases”
2. These verses also tell that Allah has created Heavens and the Earth to serve humanity. Heaven has been referred
to as canopy because it provides shelter and shield to the Earth where human beings live. Allah sends down rain to
make the Earth fertile so that foods and fruits could be grown and hence allows all beings on Earth to survive.
These bounties of Allah remind mankind to be grateful to Allah and use the environment with respect.
(b)
1. Allah has created everything and he has created a lot for the benefit of mankind (guidance, fertile earth,
shade and water from sky) because He is a loving God. So we should always praise Allah for His bounties
e.g. by looking after the environment and not polluting it.
2. We should always ask Him for everything because He is a sure provider. He provides us with sustenance like
food and water, which are the by-product of heavens and the earth. Thus we should be grateful to Him by
worship him alone.
3. It also suggests that mankind should not commit the greatest sin of associating partners with God, for He is the
only Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “Shirk is the greatest of all sins”.
And your Lord is most bountiful, 4. He who taught by the pen, 5.Taught man what he did not know.
(a)
1. This passage is about Allah‟s relation with humans, Who is their Creator and Teacher.
2. The theme of this Surah is Tawhid that is Oneness of Allah. Allah is the Creator of man and everything
that exists. He has created man out of the insignificant material which shows His strength to create. He
has complete control over them, and thus is the Most powerful (Omni-potent).
3. Allah has purest and perfect knowledge of everything. He is Omniscient, as Ayat-al- Kursi also says:
“Nor shall they compass any of his Knowledge except as He wills". He has taught man with
written knowledge of different things through revelations and Divine books. If this knowledge had not
been granted, man would have been otherwise ignorant of the right path.
(b)
1. These verses of Surah Al Alaq mentions God‟s power of creation, which is seen in the way He has
created humans from almost nothing. So this strengthens Muslim belief in Allah and they depend upon
Him.
2. This passage starts with the word “Iqra” which means “Read”. Thus it makes Muslims realize about the
importance of attaining knowledge.
3. They also realize the significance of Divine books like the Holy Quran which were revealed to guide
them as a result they recite the Holy Quran frequently in in order to follow the straight path of Allah.
4. From this passage, Muslims also recognize the relationship between God and man as Teacher and
student because this is the same knowledge provided by Allah which makes man superior to other
creations and vicegerent of God.
(b)
1. The teachings of this surah tell humans that everyone will be judged on last day.
2. It also makes us realize that this world is temporary and will come to an end one day.
3. On the Last day, humankind will be presented in the court of Allah who will be judged by Him according to
their deeds. Therefore, we should be careful about how to live our lives as we know that we will be held
accountable.
4. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) has said, “This world is a cultivating ground for the Hereafter”. Thus it motivates us
to follow the straight path shown to us by the Omnipotent Allah through His Books and Prophets and also
discourages us to commit sins. Then we follow the pillars of Islam like prayer and fasting and avoid using
alcohol and pork.
5. The role of earth on the Last day, tells us about its importance and so it should be looked after e.g. we should
not degrade it through deforestation.
1. This Surah tells Muslims about God‟s power which means He can protect against everything.
2. His infinite power makes Him a refuge against the evils mentioned and this sura is specifically recited for
protection.
3. This is important for Muslims now who worry about things they think will harm them in their families or jobs,
etc.
4. Muslims usually recite this Sura along with Sura Al Falaq (which also has a similar theme) to remain in
peace through Allah‟s blessings.
Allah’s Messengers
11. SURAH AL- BAQARAH (2:30 to 37)
30. Behold, your Lord said to the angels: „I will create a vicegerent on earth.‟ They said: „Will You place there one
who will make mischief there and shed blood?- whilst we celebrate your praises and glorify your holy (name)?‟ He
said: „I know what you do not know.‟ 31. And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them
before the angels, and said: „Tell me the names of these if you are right.‟ 32. They said: „Glory to You, of
knowledge we have none, save what You have taught us: In truth it is You who are perfect in knowledge and
wisdom.‟ 33. He said: „Adam! Tell them their names.‟ When he had told them, Allah said: „Did I not tell you that I
know the secrets of heaven and earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?‟ 34. And behold, We
said to the angels: „Bow down to Adam‟. And they bowed down. Not so Iblis: he refused and was haughty: he was
of those who reject faith. 35. We said: „Adam! You and your wife dwell in the Garden; and eat of the bountiful
things in it as You wish. But do not approach this tree, or you will run into harm and transgression.‟ 36. Then
Satan made them slip from there, and got them out of what they had been in. We said: „Go down, with enmity
between yourselves. On earth will be your dwelling place and your means of livelihood, for a time.‟ 37. Then Adam
learnt from his Lord words of inspiration, and his Lord turned towards him; for He is often-returning, most
merciful.
(a)
1. The theme of this passage is that Allah is the sole creator of everything, Who created Hazrat Adam
(man) and angels.
2. It also mentions that Allah has strong relationship with His prophets like He gifted Adam with
knowledge and therefore, due to this, gave him superiority over angels.
3. Allah also gave Adam the status of His vicegerent on earth and chose him as prophet. Therefore, Allah
gives knowledge to those who He wants and prophethood to who He pleases.
4. When satan mislead Hazrat Adam, God did not leave him but instead forgave him and still made him
the vicegerent on earth. Thus this means that God always looks after His prophets.
(b)
1. The importance of this surah is that Adam was the first prophet of God, who was made his
representative on earth.
2. This gives Muslims a sense of their connection to God as Adam is called the father of humankind and
everyone is descended from him.
3. God showed Adam‟s importance by making the angels bow to him, and forgiving him when he
disobeyed. This should make humankind understand their status, they should seek forgiveness from God
and worship Him.
4. It also shows God‟s care and direct relationship with every individual.
12. SURAH AL- ANA’M (6:75 to 79)
75. So also did We show Abraham the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth, so that he might have
certainty. 76. When the night covered him over, he saw a star: He said: „This is my Lord.‟ But when it set, he
said: „I do not love things that set.‟ 77. When he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: „This is my Lord.‟ But
when the moon set, he said: „Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among those who go astray.‟ 78. When he
saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: „This is my Lord; this is the greatest.‟ But when the sun set, he said: „O
my people! I am indeed free from your giving partners to Allah.‟ 79. „For me, I have set my face firmly and truly
towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allah.‟
(a)
1. This passage talks about God‟s relationship with His messengers, in this case the prophet Ibrahim (AS). These
verses mention the story of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and his search for his true God.
2. The signs of the sun and the moon and the star were shown to Abraham to clear his confusion about his
ancestor‟s belief in idols. In search of God, Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) never committed shirk as Allah says:
"Say, “Verily my God has guided me to a way that is straight, a religion of right path by Abraham, the
true in faith, and he (certainly) joined no gods with Allah"
3. Eventually Hazrat Ibrahim (AS)recognized the Oneness and supremacy of Allah which shows that Prophets are
always guided by Allah towards the right path and He helps them in need. Thus he alone is worthy of worship.
(b)
1. These teachings tell man to have belief in God alone and not ascribe partners to Him (avoid Shirk). This also
makes them realize that they need to look to One God for answers.
2. This passage strengthens our belief in prophets as it shows that God communicated with His prophet Abraham
through His creation.
3. The Muslims also realize that these created things are not permanent. They are just the signs of Allah to show
that He is One, the creator of all. So we should worship the creator and not His creations as these celestial
bodies have been created for the benefits of mankind e.g. sun provide light & warmth.
4. Hazrat Ibrahim (RA) asked Allah for guidance and in return Allah supported him. So we should also ask for
Allah‟s assistance as otherwise we can go astray.
you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught you the
Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold! You make out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by
my leave, and you breathe into it and it becomes a bird by my leave, and you heal those born blind, and the
lepers, by my leave. And behold! You bring forth the dead by my leave. And behold! I restrained the Children of
Israel from you when you showed them the clear signs, and the unbelievers among them said: „This is nothing but
evident magic.‟
(a)
1. This passage talks about God‟s relationship with His messengers, in this case the prophet Jesus.
2. Allah gave knowledge to His prophets to help them like Jesus (AS) got the Holy spirit, the Book, wisdom
and law and the Gospel.
3. He also gives miracles to His prophets as a sign of their Prophethood and in order to show His support for
them. The miracles of Jesus included healing the blind, treating the lepers and resurrecting the dead.
4. The repetitive use of the phase “by My leave” shows that humans can do great things but with God‟s
permission as He has power and authority over all that exists.
5. He also gives humankind signs through prophets, of His existence, which separates those who believe and
those who don‟t.
6. Allah saved Jesus from his enemies, as the Holy Quran says at another place "Behold! Allah said, "O
Jesus! I will take you and raise you to Myself and clear you (of the falsehoods) of those who
blaspheme". This proves that Allah protects His chosen ones from harm.
(b)
1. This passage made us understand that Allah is a loving God Who has sent Prophets to guide mankind.
Thus this strengthens our belief in Oneness of Allah & Prophets.
2. This passage confirms that Prophet Jesus was a sign and proof of Allah's power over all things. Similarly,
Humans are capable of great feats but it is God who gives permission for these e.g. moon landings &
space travel.
3. These signs show that God is All-powerful. He is the Controller of everything and allows things to happen.
Thus, Muslims should remember Him more often by praying, fasting, supplicating or doing good deeds etc.,
to ensure they are counted as believers.
1. By the glorious morning light, 2. And by the night when it is still, 3. Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor is he
displeased. 4. And truly the Hereafter will be better for you than the present. 5 And soon your Lord will give you
so that you will be pleased. 6. Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter? 7. And He found you
wandering, and He gave you guidance. 8. And He found you in need, and made you independent. 9. Therefore, do
not treat the orphan with harshness, 10. Nor drive the beggar away; 11. But tell about the bounty of your Lord!
(a)
1. The main theme of this surah is God‟s relationship with Prophets i.e. in this case Holy Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH).
2. When there was a gap in revelations, the Quraysh mocked the Holy Prophet (pbuh) by saying that his
Lord had forsaken him. This distressed the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Thus, this passage was revealed to
console the Holy Prophet (pbuh), which shows that Allah always helps his prophets.
3. This also means that Allah helps those in need. Therefore, Muslims should turn to Him when distressed.
4. Allah rejects the claims of his enemies and assures him of His help by referring to His blessings upon him
in the past e.g. financial security (Hazrat Khadija), independence, shelter (Hazrat Abu Talib) and
guidance through revelation towards the right path. This means that Allah‟s support is with the Prophets
even when they do not realize its presence.
5. Allah instructs the Holy Prophet (pbuh) & indirectly all Muslims of being helpful & kind to less fortunate
as a token of gratitude for His bounties e.g. towards orphans and beggars. Surah Al-Rehman says,
“Then which of the blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny?”)
(b)
1. Surah Al Duha tells us that God blessed the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and helped him in the difficult
moments of his life. This means that Allah always supports His prophets, which also strengthens our
belief in them.
2. This passage instructs Muslims not to worry when others tease them in the time of difficulty.
3. God gave blessings to the Prophet Muhammad, despite people saying that he had been forgotten by
God. Thus, Muslims should look at their own lives to see their blessings and not think they have been
given nothing.
4. They should also not constantly want more than what they have and instead should remain grateful to
God through prayers, giving charity and helping those less fortunate than themselves. They should
make people aware of the ways in which God helps them.
15. SURAH AL- KAUTHAR (108)
1. To you have We granted abundance. 2. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice. 3. For he who hates you, he will be
cut off.
(a)
1. This passage talks about God‟s mercy and His relationship with the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This
was revealed to console the Holy Prophet (PBUH) who was in shock after the death of his sons and was
being mocked by the Quraysh who called him “Abtar”. The theme is that Allah‟s support is always with His
prophets.
2. The abundance refers to the bounties granted to the Holy prophet (PBUH) by Allah in this life and the
Hereafter. God has therefore, granted the Holy Prophet (PBUH) success, and because of this, he (and all
Muslims) should continue to show loyalty to God through prayer and sacrifice even in times of difficulty as
the Holy Quran says, "Say: Verily, my Salah, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord
of all that exists. He has no partner. And of this i have been commanded, and I am the first of the
Muslims".
3. He (PBUH) was assured that his enemies would be punished which shows that God remains near to His
prophets.
(b)
1. The teachings give an insight into how the relationship between God and the Prophet has lessons for
Muslims.
2. Muslims today are that future generation of followers that was given to the Prophet, and so this sura
gives hope to people in times of need.
3. Future hope is also given with the promise of the Kawthar in paradise.
4. God always intervenes in times of difficulty so Muslims should always remember to look to Him for help
and support, and not feel disheartened in times of difficulty, e.g. during illness or oppression.
5. Muslims should remain steadfast despite the difficulties or mockeries that they face.
