Section Three: Summary (15 marks)

Read the following passage carefully then answer the question after it.

The thought of examinations creates a fear in most of us, particularly

students. Students have to undergo the torture of
Preparing for examination and waiting in suspense for the results. But
students are not alone in their dislike for examinations .Examiners and
invigilators also share students distaste for examinations. Students view
exams with hatred, examiners with distrust and invigilators with a boredom.
But there is no escaping the fact that examinations are part and parcel of our
educational system and in some form or another are likely to be there for
every long time to come. How else can you find out whether a pupil is good
enough to go higher class or whether a man is fit for a particular job/. How
can you select a suitable application to fill a vacancy when many have
applied? How can one be sure that a candidate had reached a certain
standard of education?

Examinations are very much a reality and they have the disgusting quality of
appearing with disconcerting frequency. Consequently, the sooner we accept
the fact, the better. How then should one prepare for it? Good result in an
examinations do not depend so much on last minute revision as on constant
revision done throughout the year. Loosely, there are three period of revision
first ,as soon as new topic had been done, second about mid-way between
the first revision and the examination , and third two to three weeks before
the examination with hope and confidence.

Most examinees walk into the examination room in a hopeless mood and
when they sit at their tables, their mind go blank. This operation is not only
boring, but it also makes a set standard of making difficult to maintain.
Hence, through no fault of the examiner an examinee might get a few marks
more than he deserves or another examinee a few marks less. Having read
the question paper carefully and understood exactly what each question
requires for an answer, the examinee should choose the question which is
easiest for him. Continue to answer the question that can be tackled best.
Revise the answer carefully before you go on to the next question .you will
be shocked at the number of care less mistakes one can make. Answer all the
question if you have some time before you .make a quick revision of the
answer paper.

In the examination room while the examinee are busy thinking and writing ,
the invigilator is not the liveliest of men .He faces the tedious prospect of
pacing the floor for perhaps two hours or even more. His concentration, like
the examiners is likely to suffer and a sharp examinee might take advantage
of the situation.

Choose only one question out of the two questions and indicate the question
number, summarize according to the instructions:

Question one: in not more than 40 words, summarize the purposes

examinations serve.

Question two:
In not more than 80 words, summarize the hints the write gives an examinee
to follow in preparing for examination in the examination room.

Section four: comprehension (20 marks)

Read the following passage carefully then answer all the question that follows.

Robin Van Persie spent endless hours as young boy in Holland watching classic
world cup finals on video. On the wall of his London home are two prints, one
shows his idol Diego Maradona lifting the world cup in 1986 and the other
Zinedine Zidan doing likewise in 1998.
Today, the Arsenal striker has the opportunity to join the Pantheon of great
forwards who have won the ultimate prize and he could barely put in to words
what it would mean. “Being in the final is a strange feeling and does not seem
real”, he said “it has not sunk in, I am used to watching other games with other
teams in the final, But now, we are right in it, right in the middle and it’s a
fantastic feeling. I have a really big picture with Maradona on the wall at home in
my game room.it is an unbelievable picture of him holding the World cup. He is
on his team mates’ shoulders and he is holding it with passion. If we win, I want
that picture with me holding the world cup. “Van Persie has endured a difficult
tournament from a personal point of view. Having only recovered from an elbow
injury in time for Holland’s opener, he has just scored one goal. It is believed he
finds it difficult playing a alongside Holland’s star players Arjen Robben and
Wesley sneijder, but he spoke of the team spirit that has carried the Dutch to their
world cup.

Finally since the losses in 1974 and 1978. He added, I don’t know about previous
sides but what I know in this team is that it is unbelievable if you put a camera
inside our hotel, you would see us playing table tennis, we are making jokes,
everybody is talking to each other, when you have a group of players where half of
the team is not talking to each other, you are not going anywhere.

In a wonderful side story, the top two scoring players will meet in this world cup
final, both David Villa of Spain and Wesley Sneijder of the Netherland lead the
tournament with five goals apiece. Villa and sneijder are in contention for the
golden boot award given to players who scores the most goals. Both players will
also be contenders of the Golden Bell award given to players of the tournament.
Casillas has kept a clean sheet in three straight games and four out of six games in
the world cup. The amazing thing about Spain is the fact that besides Villa, Only
two others players have scored, the games –winner against Chile and Charles
Puyol scored the goal against Germany to send Spain into the finals.
