Discrete3 Time
Signals:
Those signals which are defined only at discrete instants of time are called as discrete
time signals. The amplitude of discrete time signals is continuous but these signals are
discrete in time. The amplitude of a discrete time signal between two time instants is just
not defined. For the discrete time signals, the independent variable is time, denoted by n.
As these signals are defined only at discrete time instants, therefore, they are given by a
sequence x(n) or x(nT) where, n is an integer.
The graphical representation of discrete time signals is shown below-

Different types of discrete signals are discussed below.

Unit st4ep
Unit impulse sequence:
sequence:
u(k)=1, for k≥0 Also called sample sequence.
=0, for k<0 δ(k)=1, for k=0
=0, for k≠0
Shifted impulse sequence:
δ(k-a)=1, for k=a
=0, for k≠a
Ramp
Parabolic sequence:
5s equence:
r(k)=Ak, for k≥0 2
p(k)= 2 , for k≥0
=0, for k<0
=0, for k<0
Even
sig6nal:
(n) = (-); for - ∞ < < ∞

Odd signal:
(-) = -(); for − ∞ < < ∞
Period7 ic
signal:
F(k)=f(k+n), n=sample period

Aperiodic signal:
F(k)≠f(k+n), n=sample period
System:
8A system is a physical device that can produce an output or response for the given input.
It may also be an entity which works on an input signal and transforms it into an output
signal. It’s a set of elements which are connected together and generates an output signal
corresponding to an input signal.
Generally, a system is represented by a block diagram in figure-1. Here, the arrow
entering the box denotes the input signal or excitation [r(t)] and the arrow leaving the
box denotes the output signal or response [c(t)].
The relationship between the input signal r(t) and the output signal c(t) of a system is
given as
() = [()]
