Alg 1 Part 2 Unit 3
UNIT 3
You will be comparing 4 people who are throwing objects into the air. Their throws are
represented in different ways below. You will identify the following for each:
Maximum height, longest time in air, type of object, and age of sibling.
y= -16 (x+1)(x-3)
Y= -16x2+60x+20
Use the following piece of information to figure out which people represent each object,
the height it launched, time in the air, and the age order
The Bowling ball, launched by the second oldest, reached maximum height in
one second.
Adam launched his from a tree house 48 feet in the air
Anne's object had the longest time in the air.
Debbie’s object was the only one launched from the ground
The tennis ball went the highest in the air
The football was launched by Damian and took longer than the arrow and
bowling ball to hit the ground
Anne is the youngest
The youngest brother shot the arrow
Assignment Instructions
1) Fill in the table below with the correct information. For each person below, provide
explanation for how you came up with each response for name, object, height of object,
time in air, and age of sibling.
2) Who’s Best? Write a paragraph stating who you think is best and why by justifying your answer with the
information you compiled.
Using the Desmos calculator – Use the scale of 0.25 to help you get a good visual of the
equations.
Unit 3
Let's analyze the given information and match each person with their respective object, height,
time in the air, and age of sibling:
Explanation
1. Person 1 (Adam): Adam launched his object from a tree house 48 feet in the air, and the
football was launched by Damian and took longer than the arrow and bowling ball to hit the
ground, which fits the given data.
2. Person 2 (Brian): The bowling ball was launched by the second oldest sibling and reached
maximum height in one second. The arrow is the only remaining option, and it went the highest
in the air, which matches with Brian.
3. Person 3 (Damian): Anne's object had the longest time in the air, and the tennis ball was
launched by Damian. The only object left is the arrow for Anne.
4. Person 4 (Anne): The youngest brother shot the arrow, and the only object left for Anne is the
bowling ball.
Who's Best
In terms of the given information, Damian with the tennis ball seems to be the best. The tennis
ball reached the highest maximum height (64 feet) and stayed in the air for the longest time (3
seconds). This indicates that Damian had the best combination of launch height and hang time
among the four people. Additionally, the tennis ball's flight characteristics suggest that Damian
might have achieved a more controlled and skillful throw. Therefore, based on the provided data,
Damian appears to be the best thrower in this scenario.
