1 Safety Advice

1.1 Safety Instructions

 Exclusively for competent professionals.

 Current version of the safety manual and any local safety requirements must be
consulted and followed before initiating works.
 Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

1.2 Safety Warnings Used in this Manual

The following types of safety warnings are used in the present manual.

WARNING

The safety warning with the signal word “Warning” is used to indicate a hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

2 * Preventive Maintenance

2.1 Cleaning Procedures

Water must not be allowed to flow into the car, the hoistway or the pit.

The following rules must be followed when cleaning:

 Never use cleaning agents containing strong solvents or abrasives.
 All materials can be cleaned without problem, using soapy water except the unprotected
surfaces and ropes.
 When cleaning several different materials, always proceed by taking into account the
method of cleaning for the most sensitive material.
 Materials with a structured surface or which show finishing marks (brushed, grained,
etc.) must be cleaned in the direction of the surface finish. Cleaning across the direction
of the finish can damage the surface.

2.11 * Tripping Speed (VCA) Test

General The purpose of measuring the (mean) tripping speed (VCA) is to make sure that the
overspeed governor has correctly adjusted for the rated speed of the installation and that it
works properly.

Auxiliary  Tachometer
Equipment (sampling period  1/10 s, with memory for the maximum value measured)
Required  Extra weight (approximately 5 kg).

 An operational fault exists when the mean value is above the allowable VCA tolerance
shown in the table below.
 The imprecise conditions that affect the measuring process are allowed for the
tolerances shown.
 The overspeed governor must be replaced if the VCA tripping speed is not within
tolerance.

Tripping Speed on Nameplate (VCA) Allowable VCA Tolerance for Field Check
Car [m/s] Counterweight [m/s] > VCA < VAC
3.00 < VCA1 3.30 < VCA2 VCA+10 % Downward deviations are
1.26 < VCA1  3.00 1.39 < VCA2  3.30 VCA+20 % permitted, provided they
do not result in faulty
0.88 < VCA1  1.26 0.97 < VCA2  1.39 VCA+30 % operation.
VCA1  0.88 VCA2 0.97 VCA+50 %

Procedure
No Step
1 Check the rated speed on the type label and verify that the correct overspeed
governor is installed.
2 Position the car / cwt near the highest landing.
3 Engage the rope brake and clamp the governor rope.
4 The drive control must be switched off, if a travel pulse transmitter has been
installed on the overspeed governor.
5 Use the governor rope on the car to engage the safety gear
 Disconnect the rope coupling bracket from the governor lever (rope is an
endless loop)
 Secure the governor lever in the position that engages the safety gear (put a
loop between the lever and a guide rail bracket).
6 Install the extra weight above the rope coupling bracket as shown in below
diagram.

governor (a low acceleration) and measure the rotational or linear speed at
which the governor trips.
9 Record the measured rotational or linear tripping speed of the governor in the
Acceptance and correction Certificate.
10 Repeat the same measurements process for three times and record the values.
11 Calculate the mean of the recorded three set of values.
12 Continue with maintenance process, if the calculated mean is within the
allowable range.
13 Continue with chapter "3 Faults", if the calculated mean is out of the allowable
range.
14 Attach the rope coupling bracket back to the governor lever, remove the extra
weight added.
