Introduction
➢ Artifacts are undesirable optical densities or blemishes on a radiograph
or any other medical image.
➢ It is any irregularities on an image that is not caused by the proper
shadowing of tissue by the primary x-ray beam.
➢ Artifacts can interfere with the visualization of anatomical structures
and can lead to misdiagnosis.
➢ Artifacts can be controlled when their cause is identified.

Associated with the manner in which the radiographer
conducts the examination.

In cases of trauma, pins, fasteners, dressings, and splints often have to


remain in place because their removal could be dangerous to the patient.

position or springing
of guide shoes in
turnaround
assembly
02 ROLLER MARKERS: Pi Lines

CAUSE: Dirt
or
chemical stains on
roller
03 Dirty rollers

CAUSE: Dirty
or
warped rollers,
which can leave
sludge
deposits on film
04 Chemical fog

CAUSE: Improper or
inadequate
processing
chemistry
05 Curtain effect

CAUSE: Improper
squeezing of
processing
chemicals
from film
06 Wet- pressure sensitization

CAUSE: pressureduring
development and
produce small circular
patterns of increased
OD.
07 Emulsion Pick-Off

CAUSE: Emulsion removed from the


previous films that is either stuck
on processor rollers or dissolved in
the developer solution is
deposited on subsequent images
08 Dichroic stain

CAUSE: 1) Improper or inadequate


chemistry term generally applied to all
chemical stain, dichroic means Two
colors, chemical; stains seen on a
radiograph can appear yellow, green,
blue or purple,
2) Caused by continued
development in the fixer, never occur
in automatic processor
09 Streaking

CAUSE: Failure
of agitation,
improper circulation
system of automatic
processing
10 Reticulation marks

CAUSE: Uneven solution,


High temperature causing
excessive expansion and
contraction of film
emulsion during
processing
3. HANDLING AND
STORAGE ARTIFACTS
A number of artifacts that are caused by improper film
handling and storage conditions.

in the darkroom or
within the cassette

02 Kink marks

CAUSE: It
is caused by
the kinking or abrupt
bending of film.
03 Pressure marks

CAUSE: Thefilm is
stacked too high
in storage
04 Static marks

CAUSE: build-up of
electrons in the
emulsion and is most
noticeable during the
winter or during periods
of extremely low
humidity.
05 Hyporetention Stains

CAUSE: Thiosulfate is
left on the film
because of
inadequate
washing
06 Fingerprints

CAUSE: Black:
Developer on
fingertips; White:
Oil or Fixer on
fingertips blocks
developer
