PSYCHOANALYSIS
Psychoanalysis, developed by Sigmund Freud,
is a psychological theory and therapeutic
approach that aims to explore unconscious
conflicts, desires, and motivations
shaping human behavior, often
through techniques like free
association and dream analysis.

Key Concepts of
Psychoanalysis

Three Regions of the Human Mind

Conscious: Represents thoughts and feelings of which we

are aware.
Preconscious: Contains memories and information that are
easily accessible to consciousness.
Unconscious: Houses repressed memories, desires, and
instincts that influence behavior
without conscious awareness.
5
ICEBERG METHAPOR
Freud likened the mind to an iceberg, with
the conscious mind being the tip visible
above the water, while the preconscious
and unconscious lie beneath the surface,
influencing behavior.

FIXATION
Occurs when an individual becomes "stuck"
at a particular psychosexual stage due to
unresolved conflicts, potentially leading to
personality traits associated
with that stage persisting
into adulthood.

Three Components of
the Mind

7
Three Components of the Mind
Id
- Operates on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification of
desires and instincts.
Ego
- Functions on the reality principle, mediating between the id's
impulses, the superego's moral demands, and external reality.
Superego
- Represents the internalized societal and parental standards, serving
as the conscience and striving for moral perfection. 7
