IAT3 Question Bank

1. What are sequence impedance and sequence networks? Draw the zero sequence networks for
any four combinations of 3-phase transformer bank.
OR
Draw the zero sequence networks for all the combinations of 3-phase transformer bank..
2. The current flowing to a Δ connected load through line a is 10 A. With current on line a as
reference and assuming that line c is open find the symmetrical component of line currents.
OR
A balanced delta connected load is connected to 3-phase symmetrical supply. The line
currents are each 10 A in magnitude. If fuse in one of the lines blows out, determine the
sequence components of the line currents.

3. Draw the positive, negative and zero sequence networks of power system shown in the figure
below. Choose a base of 50 MVA, 220 kV in the 50 Ω transmission line and mark all
reactances in pu. The ratings are as follows:
G1 and G2: 25 MVA, 11 kV, X” = 20%
phase transformer (each): 20 MVA, 11/220 kV, X = 15%
The negative sequence reactance of each synchronous machine is equal to the sub-transient
reactance. The zero sequence reactance of each machine is 8%. assume that zero sequence
reactance of lines are 250% of their positive sequence reactances.

4. A 25 MVA, 11 kV, 3-phase generator has a reactance of 20% as shown in the figure below.
The motors have rated inputs of 15 MVA and 7.5 MVA both 10 kV with X = 25%. the 3-
phase transformers are both rated 30 MVA 10.8/121 kV with X = 10% each. The series
reactance of the line is 100 Ω. Draw the positive and negative sequence networks of the
system with reactances marked in pu. Assume that the negative sequence reactance of each
machine is equal to its sub-transient reactance. Select generator rating as base in the generator
circuit. Draw the zero sequence network. Assume zero sequence reactance of generator and
motor to be 0.06 pu. Current limiting reactors of 2.5 Ω each are connected in the neutral of
the generator and motor number 2. The zero sequence reactance of the transmission line is
300 Ω.

5. Derive an expression for fault current if LG fault occurs at the terminals of unloaded
synchronous generator. Show the connection of sequence network to represent fault..
6. Derive an expression for fault current when double line to ground fault through impedance
occurs on power system.
7. Derive an expression for fault current when line to line fault through fault impedance Zf
occurs on power system. Show the connection of sequence network to represent fault.
8. For two conductor open fault, derive expression for current and draw connections of sequence
network to represent the fault
9. Explain open conductor type of faults.
10. A 25 MVA,13.2 kV alternator, with a solidly grounded neutral has a sub-transient reactance
of 0.25 pu. The negative and zero sequence reactances are 0.35 pu and 0.1 pu receptively.
Determine the fault current and the line-to-line voltages when the line to line fault occurs at
the terminals of the alternator. Neglect the resistance. Take base of 25 MVA, 13.2 kV.
11. A synchronous motor is receiving 10 MW of power at 0.8 pf lag at 6 kV. An LG fault takes
place at the middle point of the transmission line as shown in figure below. Find the fault
current. Choose generator rating as base.
G: 20 MVA, 11 kV, X1 = 0.2 pu, X2 = X0 = 0.1 pu
T1: 18 MVA, 11.5/34.5 kV, X = 0.1 pu
Transmission line: X1 = X2 = 5Ω, X0 = 10Ω
T2: 15 MVA, 6.9/34.5 kV, X = 0.1 pu
M: 15 MVA, 6.9 kV, X1 = 0.2 pu, X2 = X0 = 0.1 pu

12. Draw the positive, negative and zero sequence networks of power system shown in the
figure below. Also, compute fault current if LL fault occurs at F. The reactances are in pu
with respect to same base.

Comp X0 X1 X2
G1 0.05 0.3 0.2
G2 0.03 0.25 0.15
L1 and L2 0.7 0.3 0.3
T1 0.12 0.12 0.12
T2 0.1 0.1 0.1

13. A 3-phase, 400 V Y connected neutral grounded generator is subjected to various faults.
Find positive, negative, and zero sequence impedances. Also, compute the fault current if
LLG fault occurs. The fault currents for various faults are: 3-phase fault is 120 A, LL fault is
160 A and LG fault is 240 A.
14. A 3-phase generator with line to line voltage of 400 V is subjected to an LLG fault. If Z1 =
j2Ω, Z2 = j0.5Ω, and Z0 = j0.25Ω, determine the fault current. Repeat the problem for LL fault
and LG fault.
15. Derive an expression for the swing equation.
16. State and explain Equal Area Criterion (EAC).what are the assumptions made in applying
EAC?
