Course Description

This course will cover topics in both precalculus and calculus, at a more basic level
than Math 1560. We will begin with a brief review of basic high school algebra and
arithmetic. We then revisit these concepts from the point of view of functions; in
particular, we will consider linear, quadratic, polynomial, and rational functions.
Topics in functions such as domain, range, and graphing will be considered. We will
also cover the basics of trigonometry and trigonometric functions; time permitting, we
will also consider logarithmic and exponential functions. This precalculus material
will make up about two thirds of the course. We will end the course by covering some
of the basics from calculus, including limits, derivatives, and curve skething.
Course Evaluation:
Your grade will be determined according to the following table (see below for
explanations of each component):

Component Tutorial Assignments Assignments Test Final Exam

Weight (%) 20 20 20 40

Tutorial Assignments:
During most tutorials you will be given an assignment to complete during the tutorial.
The structure of the assignments, for instances if they are group assignments or
individual, if they are short answer or long answer, if they involve sharing or
presenting solutions may vary from week to week. The grade on these assignments
will be based both on active participation in completing the assignments as well as on
overall correctness. Your final exam grade will be used in place of the grade for any
tutorial assignment on which it exceeds the grade you would have received, including
in particular any assignment which you miss for any reason.
There will not generally be an option to make-up missed tutorial assignments. Though
you can, and are encouraged, to discuss the missed questions with your classmates
and/or your instructors during office hours.

Assignments:
Assignments will be online homework, to be completed using WebWorK, an online
homework system we're able to provide free of charge on one of the Math & CS
department servers. The advantage of doing problems online is that you will get
multiple attempts to solve each problem, and immediate feedback on whether your
answers are correct. The WebWorK server can be accessed at
http://webwork.cs.uleth.ca. Further instructions will be provided in class and on the
course website.

Test: There is an in class test scheduled for Friday October 27th.

This in person test is intended to give you experience with this format of assessment
with this type of material before the final exam. There will be No Makeups for a
missed test, your final exam grade will be used in place of the test grade if you miss it
or if your grade on the test is lower than your grade on the final exam.
As the test grade can be replaced by the final exam grade you are almost always better
off writing the test if you are not sick or otherwise unable to do so, even if you are
behind in the material and may not perform well.

Final exam:
There will be a standard three-hour final exam. Note that final exams are scheduled
by the Registrar's Office. Please see their website for the time and place of the exam.
The final exam will be cumulative, but with more weigh assigned to later topics.

Letter grade conversions:

The percentage grades earned in this class will be converted to letter grades according
to the following table:

Letter grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D F
Minimum % 95 85 80 77 73 70 67 63 60 55 50 0
required

Important Policies

Academic Accommodation Policy: Students with documentable disabilities should

contact the Accommodated Learning Centre in B760, University Hall. For further
information see their website: uleth.ca/ross/accommodated-learning-centre.
Academic dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. (In particular,
cheating on an exam will automatically result in a grade of F for the semester.) You
are subject to the student discipline policy for both academic and non-academic
offences that is described in the University Calendar.
For further details consult the academic offence policy
uleth.ca/policy/resources/student-discipline-policy-academic-offences-undergraduate-students.
Acknowledging Sources on Graded Work: If you receive a complete or partial
answer, or otherwise get significant help from another student, a textbook, an online
source, etc. you must acknowledge this, and failure to do so can have serious
consequences under the academic offence policy.
If you do get help from such a source, you should not simply reproduce a solution
from any source. You should understand the idea, and write your own version (and
acknowledge the source of any ideas). Though excessive copying with a citation may
have some penalties, these are inherently less severe than the consequences for failure
to cite a source which you are copying which would be a violation of the academic
offence policy.
Copyright on Course Material: All course material, including but not limited to: the
proceedings of lectures and discussion sessions, assignments, and exams are protected
by copyright. You are in general not authorized to redistribute these materials.
Including, for instance, uploading them to websites which may produce for hire
solutions for assignments. In various circumstances you may be entitled to record the
proceedings (see for example uleth.ca/ross/accommodated-learning-centre/content/
copyright-exceptions) of lectures or other discussions. However in most
circumstances such recording impacts the copyright and privacy expectations of all
participants in the discussions and consequently restrictions which limit the use of
such recordings exist (see p.56 of the undergraduate calendar).
Student Conduct: The University has a code of conduct which upholds the
Principles of Student Citizenship (uleth.ca/policy/principles-student-citizenship-0). It
is the responsibility of every student to behave in a manner which upholds these
principals.
For further details see also the non-academic offences policy:
uleth.ca/policy/resources/student-discipline-policy-non-academic-offences-undergraduate-and-graduate-students.

Harassment and Discrimination: The University is committed to creating

environment in which members of the University Community can work, live and
learn in a climate free from Harassment and Discrimination. For further details on the
university policy on harassment and discrimination see:
uleth.ca/policy/resources/harassment-and-discrimination-policy.
Approximate Lecture Schedule: This schedule is only a guideline.
