Authority - Ahmed Al Hassan (as) v.

Non-Working Clerics

Mamadou Rurimwishiga

We live in a world where there are thousands of religions and spiritual beliefs. Yet, we still see
much divisions, distortions, and misguidance especially in Abrahamic religions (Christianity,
Judaism, and Islam). And as a truth seeker, a question that often comes to mind is which person
do I go to to seek guidance to the religion of Allah (swt)?

Insha Allah (God willing) in this article we will provide evidence on how we can only seek
guidance through individuals whom Allah (swt) has given authority and it has never been
through the scholars as some people state. Whether it has to deal with jurisprudential matter
or interpretation/explanation of religious scriptures. Not only that, but it is because of the
religious non-working scholars why there is so much division and misguidance in religion.

But before we move on, we must first note that we are not saying that every single religious
scholar or ‘learned man’ is evil and upon misguidance. Rather, our argument is that the
majority of the religious scholars we have today are many and are non-working, while true,
righteous scholars are few. For the Qu’ran has always mentioned that the true believers were
the minority

Now, let us see what the Qu’ran says concerning those whom Allah (swt) have given authority
and if we find any verse that says that the scholars or jurists/judges have such authority.

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among
you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should
believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result. - Surah Al-Nisa [4]: 59

And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the
people of the message if you do not know. - Surah An-Nahl [16]: 43

Those who dispute the revelations of God without having received any authority do so
because of their arrogance, but their arrogance cannot bring them any success. Seek protection
from God for He is All-hearing and All-aware. - Surah Al-Ghafir (40): 56

{It is He Who has revealed unto you the Scripture wherein are explicit revelations—they are the
Mother of the Book—and others [which are] allegorical. But those in whose hearts is doubt
pursue that which is allegorical seeking [to cause] dissension and seeking its interpretation.
None knows its interpretation except for Allah and those who are firmly grounded in
knowledge, they say, We believe therein; All is from our Lord; but only men of understanding
really remember.} Surah Al-Imran [3]:7

So we clearly see in these verses [and there are many more] that neither the scholars, nor jurists or even
the ‘Ulama’ or elder scholars have never been given authority by Allah in regards to religion, nor are
they the doors to guidance. Rather, it has always been Prophets, Messengers, Vicegerents, and
Righteous Servants whom have such authority. And that Taqleed is only performed through them.

However we still find people [especially those who believe in Taqleed] try their best to bring
evidence that the jurists or scholars are needed for they ‘inheritors of knowledge’ and their
duty is to save the people from misguidance.

Yet we find the scholars failing miserably in another aspect, and that is not helping and
reminding the people of recognizing the Messenger of our time or the Hujjah[Proof] of Allah
(swt), Imam Al Mahdi (as). For you find them calling people to themselves or other individuals
who have not been given authority by Allah (swt).

And by doing so, we fall into the same trap as the Jews, Christians, and Quraysh .

'And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led
us astray from the [right] way.' (Holy Quran 33:67)

Abu Dharr said: "I was with the Prophet ( ‫ ) صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬one day and I heard him saying, there
is something I fear more for my Ummah than the Dajjal." It was then that I became afraid, so I
said: "Oh Rasool Allah! Which thing is that?" He ( ‫ ) صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said; " Misguided and astray
scholars. " (Musnad Ahmad (5/145)

“I am calling you, Oh People, to save yourselves from the test of those deviant misguided
misguiding Clerics. Ponder the situation of the nations which preceded you. Do you find the
deviant Clerics supporting a prophet from the prophets, or a successor from the successors?
So do not repeat the same thing again by following those deviant Clerics and fighting the
successor of Imam Al-Mahdi the way the nations before you have followed the deviant Clerics
and fought the successors and the sent prophets.” - Ahmed Al Hassan (as), Sermon of Hajj

Tune in for our next article Insha Allah where we will go over how Allah (swt) only authorized
Taqleed [imitation] through His chosen Prophets, Messengers, Vicegerents, and Righteous Servants
and not the scholars.
