Section 11.2, Conic Sections - The Circle
A circle is the set of points located a specific distance, the radius, from a specific point, the center.
Standard form of the equation of a circle reflects these two aspects: x - h + y - k = r 2 ,
2 2
where r is the radius and the center is given by the point (h , k).
Ex.
General form of the circle is given by the equation Ax 2 + Bxy + Cy 2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0 , the general form
for all conic sections. The equation for a circle is recognizable by the fact that the coefficients A =
C and B = 0.
By completing the squares for the x and y variables, the general form of a circle can be converted to
standard form.
Ex.
By using the general form of an equation and setting up a system of equations, any three points on a circle
are sufficient to find the equation for the circle.
Using the fact that A = C = 1 and B = 0, and plugging in the x- and y-coordinates for each of the known
points, a system consisting of three equations (one using each coordinate) and 3 variables (D, E,
and F) can be created. This system can then be solved in the manner discussed in section 11.4.
